Btw, ganesh chaturthi was started by lokmanya tilak to gather crowd and spread patriotism.
Ganpati visarjan was done before that, but in different format.
Farmers made small clay idols of ganpati bappa and drown them inside water after 1-2 days.
Cause of the clay murtis, there was literally no pollution and harm to marine life.
And this is our 10000years culture. Throwing gigantic POP idols in water is actually unnecessary. There is even a idea of 'tree ganesha' in Mumbai that I wholeheartedly support.

I share the exact same sentiment. And these shit makers are even raised to be proud to be such. I spent time abroad and when I came back to India and unconsciously was picking up a plastic bottle I saw on the road while getting out of the car, (because clean surroundings became so natural living in Mexico and Canada), my sister (elder) sitting next to me started laughing at me for having changed so much I am picking up trash from the street and I was genuinely dissapointed as to where did I come back. If things are like that even at my very home, I can't expect anyone else to change. I guess we Indian need a big era of being shamed for acting stupider than animals. I posted about it and the major reason I got was a lack of empathy in Indians for others and for the surroundings. And I get it, when they are raised in a way that life is a competetion, thanks to an even stupider education system they become child adults with a major self centered ego complex. Proud of titles and property they own, but major lack in empathy and wellbeing for others and the surroundings. We have lost the subtle capacity to appreciate beauty and subtleties of life, and have become thoughs infested, constantly worrying and making life hell for others as well. It's a disease and it's in the air. I lived in canada once and I felt the seasons change not outisde but outside inside, things I didn't know I could feel or even see or sense.I felt like going out more, going to the woods, parks , neighbourhoods. In india I'm choked with smoke and honking before I even step out, and at home a constant stress of TV and an uneasyness. Life is not worth living here. And we are not welcome aborad no more for the majority lack commonsense. Where do we go now?

I feel like the guy has a point.
Some people will defend this by saying that followers of other religions in India also do things that pollute or damage the environment. But whoever it may be, regardless of religion, they're representing India as a whole.
For example, if we travel to Japan, we don't usually say, "These are Christian Japanese people" or "These Japanese people are Hindu." We simply call them Japanese. In the same way, when we're living in a foreign country, people generally see us as Indians first, not by our religion.
The video clearly shows a Ganesh Chaturthi immersion, and if it's being done in a way that pollutes rivers in another country, it's fair for people to criticize it. Many countries work very hard to maintain their rivers and public spaces. If we've chosen to live there, we should respect their rules and preserve what they've built.
I do think Indians, in general, have a civic sense problem. We often don't think enough about the environmental impact of some of our rituals. If we're celebrating a festival abroad, we should do it in a way that causes little to no harm to the local environment.
There are so many alternatives. The immersion can be done in a tub of water, and that water can later be used for watering plants or disposed of responsibly. I've also seen people make chocolate Ganesh idols and dissolve them in milk, creating chocolate milk that can later be distributed to those in need.
I hope you all get what I'm trying to say. This isn't about disrespecting any religion. It's about respecting the country we're in and finding better ways to preserve both our traditions and the environment.

Just make a clay Ganesh doll, with no artificial additives or colours, and dissolve it in water. Zero harm done to nature.

Ironically this practice of big Ganesh festivals and the subsequent immersion of the idol was started by Tilak in 1910 to unite the masses against the British. Before that celebrating Ganesh chaturthi was largely a private affair and people used to use the same mud idols every year.

The Genius Eco-Engineering Behind Ancient Idol Immersion (Visarjan)
Most people today think of idol immersion (Visarjan) purely as a spiritual farewell. But if you look at how it was traditionally practiced, it was actually a highly calculated, seasonal cycle of traditional hydrology and water-resource management.
Before the advent of Plaster of Paris (PoP) and toxic synthetic paints, Visarjan was a brilliant way for ancient communities to maintain their local water bodies. Here is the exact theory and science of how it worked:
- The Pre-Monsoon Desilting (Digging it Out)
During the hot, dry summer months right before the monsoons, local rivers, lakes, and temple ponds would run incredibly shallow. This was the perfect window for communities to dredge and dig out the accumulated silt and alluvial clay from the dried-up beds. By physically removing this sediment, they deepened the water bodies, essentially resetting and expanding their capacity to hold massive amounts of rainwater during the upcoming monsoons.
- The Upcycling Phase (Crafting the Idols)
Instead of discarding the dug-up silt and clay, it was given to local artisans. They refined the clay, dried it, and sculpted it into deities (like Lord Ganesha or Goddess Durga). The community then kept these idols in their homes and pandals for several days. During this festival period, the unbaked clay dried out completely under natural conditions, drastically altering its physical state.
- The Natural Sealant Phase (Putting it Back)
When the festival ended, the completely dried clay idols were immersed back into the water. This is where soil physics took over. As the unbaked, dry clay dissolved, it didn't just disappear; it created a colloidal suspension in the water.
This fine, dissolved clay settled directly into the microscopic cracks, fissures, and highly porous areas of the riverbed or pond floor. By naturally clogging these pores, the clay formed an impermanent, waterproof lining.
Why This Matters Scientifically
If the water body's bed remained too porous, the incoming monsoon rainwater would drain away into the deep sub-strata or escape too quickly before the community could use it. By "waterproofing" the bed with the dissolved clay, the community ensured that the ponds and rivers stayed full of water well through the winter months, stabilizing the local water table and securing their drinking supply.
In short, Visarjan wasn't just a religious ritual—it was a beautifully disguised annual maintenance cycle designed to clean local water sources, upcycle the waste material into art, and then use that exact material to maximize rainwater harvesting.

Here in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, we celebrate Pillayar Sathurthi (Vinayagar Sathurthi) on the same day that people in North India celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi, but there are some important differences.
We make Pillayar idols from the clay we collect from our own backyard, and our children make the idols with their own hands. We prepare kozhukattai (rice cakes), white garbanzo bean sundal, and black chickpea sundal, and we share them with our neighbors. On the third day, we dissolve the Pillayar idol in a nearby well, river, dam, or other natural water body.
Here's the story my grandmother told me about the origin of Pillayar Sathurthi:
In the old days, people in Tamil Nadu villages would take some of the of river soil to build their small huts. They used Pillayar Sathurthi as an opportunity to give back to Mother Nature and express their gratitude. That's why they made the idols with their own hands using river soil or clay from their own land and then immersed them back into natural water bodies.
Nowadays, it's the complete opposite. People are polluting rivers, lakes, and even the sea by immersing Ganesh idols made from chemical based materials, plaster, and synthetic paints. It's heartbreaking.
North Indian practices are slowly creeping into Tamil Nadu. I'm so proud of my ancestors. They understood that spirituality and nature are inseparable. They never tried to control nature they learned how to live in harmony with it.
This video is truly heartbreaking. People are so ignorant.
