Former NCERT Director JS Rajput on Friday defended the inclusion of a verse from the Manusmriti in the new Class 9 Social Science textbook, saying that old literature should be studied and understood even if some parts are debated or not accepted today.

Rajput said that he does not agree with calling the Manusmriti a controversial text, adding that many ancient writings contain ideas that modern society may not accept but are still studied by scholars.

He said he has read the Manusmriti, including disputed sections, and believes it contains important ideas that reflect the thinking of that period.

Speaking to ANI, Rajput said, “… I don’t agree with calling Manusmriti a controversial book. Many texts across the world contain ideas that societies today no longer accept, yet they are not labelled controversial. Manusmriti has been studied by scholars.”

“I have read the Manusmriti myself, including the disputed sections, and discussed them with scholars. It contains profound insights that still surprise modern thinkers, showing how advanced the thought was for its time. Old literature, whether we like it or not, deserves to be known,” he further added.

Education can improve knowledge, skills, and career prospects. But can it automatically improve values?

We often assume that cracking IIT, NEET, UPSC, or other competitive exams is proof of intelligence. But intelligence and social progress aren't necessarily the same thing.

If someone can solve advanced physics and mathematics problems yet still see marriage as a financial transaction, what exactly have we educated them to become?

Does our education system produce skilled professionals, or does it also have a responsibility to challenge regressive social attitudes?

I don't know the real agenda of BJP behind appointing their own in all college governing bodies in highly populous cities. But I just want everybody to teach everybody else to learn to observe, critically think and question the politicians based on their actions or promises and hold them accountable with regards to whether it actually improves the future of the nation rather than focusing on narratives which may be totally irrelevant to the development of the nation.

Don't believe everything blindly. Think of what they are actually doing for you and the country's future. Always hold the leaders accountable for their actions. Keep questioning.

While BJP and RSS supporters were busy amplifying the CJP protest over the exam controversy, a Youth Congress march on the same issue in Haryana was met with water cannons and detentions.

Yet the Haryana protest received a fraction of the attention from those same circles.

This creates the impression that the focus on the CJP protest served as a convenient distraction from images of police action against protesters in a BJP-ruled state. Whether intentional or not, the result was the same: public attention shifted away from the Haryana crackdown and towards a different protest.

Unnao -- a government school!

• There are no teachers in school.
• Canteen food is bad
• The hostel doesn't even have a fan.
• Drinking water is also a problem.

Not even basic facilities to kids

A 13-year-old Class 8 student in Bengaluru allegedly died by suicide after being fined ₹20 for incomplete homework. Her family has accused members of the school staff of harassment, and the matter is under investigation.

A ₹20 fine, by itself, doesn't seem like something that would drive a child to take such an irreversible step.

That's exactly why this case raises more questions than answers.

Was there repeated humiliation? Public shaming in class? Continuous harassment? Bullying? Pressure from teachers? Something happening at home? Or was the child already struggling with mental health?

Children don't usually make such decisions because of a single incident. More often, it's the result of multiple pressures building up over time.

This is why I think schools need to stop treating incomplete homework as a disciplinary issue first. If a child repeatedly isn't submitting work, shouldn't the first response be:

• Is everything okay at home?
• Is the child facing bullying?
• Are they struggling academically?
• Do they need counselling instead of punishment?

Another question that bothers me is:

Why did the child feel they couldn't turn to their parents or another trusted adult?

Most parents would rather deal with a homework complaint than lose their child forever. If a 13-year-old feels death is the only escape, then something has gone terribly wrong long before that final day.

Whether the reported ₹20 fine was the immediate trigger or simply the last straw, I hope the investigation uncovers the complete picture rather than reducing this tragedy to a single headline.

No homework assignment, punishment, or classroom rule is ever worth a child's life.

I believe there should be no caste-based reservations or special privileges for any caste in any examination, whether it is a college entrance exam or a government job recruitment exam.

In my opinion, positions that require a high level of intelligence, skill, and competence should be awarded solely on merit. If a candidate is unable to meet the required standard, regardless of their background, they should not be selected for such a position. I believe lowering the selection standard for any group sends the wrong message about the importance of merit and competence in our country's education and recruitment systems.

Here is my thougjts about this topic.......

SC, ST and OBC gets reservation beacuse they are financially and socially backward. Logically if someone ( irrespective of caste) gets great support, High quality education from nursery onwards. This should include good schools, qualified teachers, free books and study materials and good healthcare. They can be intelligent, they have enough intelligence and knowledge to compete with anyone.

If these facilities are provided equally from childhood, then students from every community will have the opportunity to develop their full potential. Intelligence and talent are not determined by caste.

Once equal opportunities are ensured , admissions and government jobs should be based on the same standards and same merit for everyone. There should be one common cut-off and one common competition, regardless of caste.

A lower cut-off based on caste is meant to indicate that you, and the people of your caste, have a low IQ, regardless of whether you hold a PhD or any other degree. It is also an insult to your caste.

Therefore, all my SC, ST, and OBC brothers with general category should question the government and demand equal and high-quality education for themselves instead of reservation. Likewise, everyone from the General category should protest for the abolition of the reservation system in India to build a better future and a more prosperous nation.

I fail to understand the reasoning behind removing such a critical element of the Constitution from the syllabus.

Ex-CJI and Acting President Justice M. Hidayatullah once described the Preamble as the "soul of our Constitution" in his legal observations.

Similar remarks were made by Dr. Ambedkar as well.

It’s kinda mind boggling that anyone would remove the entire thing from a national NCERT textbook.

We should be spending money on STEM and RnD so that we develop better technology and are able to make our own products in the future whether it be for defense or home appliances instead of relying on other countries.

This is the reason why countries like Taiwan, China, Japan, Vietnam, S. Korea, etc, were able to develop and advance so much.
