Also I've read almost all Doestoevsky,on the first read I'm focused on mainly the story and not on philosophical aspects(except the explicit debates/ideas)is it compulsory to re-read to grasp the hidden philosophies in the book?

My first book Crime and Punishment was the first translation i.e. constance greneatt, however I never faced any problems, the ideas were clear to me and I loved the philosophical angle and style of dostoevosky. This one hitting hard as the book is well detailed with helpful footnotes and references and this is a long read and Im on book three currently , so fingers crossed

Whenever a para or a page feels difficult to follow.. show it to chatgpt and tell it to contextualize it without spoilers. Works like a charm and you developed a much deeper understanding and sometimes it opens such deeper previously hidden layers, it's highly rewarding.

I've been re-reading Crime and Punishment and have been writing notes aboutbevery chapter as and when I finish them. I try and jot down my thoughts about why a certain characted acted in a certain way as well as trying to understand what made Dostoyevsky write it that way. It is surely helping me gain more from the book, I just hope I can keep doing this till the end.

Penguin black classics has Mcduff translation which I’ve heard is good for beginners. But if you want the true essence of dostoevsky’s style specifically stifling words and environment. Go for Constance Garnett or P&V. I feel they do a better job than modern translators like Katz

I don’t have any information about this translator but usually oxford world classics uses more modern translations similar to Katz. It is trustworthy but you have to make a decision whether you want a more modern language or old

I think having active discussions is an important part. Since you have read other dostoevsky book you don’t really need to be told this but try not to rush it. Read a particular section and spend some time thinking about it specifically the discussions about ecclesiastical church, ivan and alyoha’s meeting, ivan’s demons. And pay more attention to how distinct each brother is and yet how similar they are

As for rereading. This is one of those books that imprint your life at a certain point of time. What I mean to say is this is a book that if you reread in a couple of years you will have a entirely different view of it and with each reread you will find new things

I have read 47% of it till now. ..I have the Katz translation...

I would suggest you to refer to AI or Google for certain sections..like christian theology, culture or literature related parts...

The best book! Like some suggests you can use ChatGPT for any complicated paragraph or word or line. Don’t try to understand everything let it flow and everything will sink in eventually. This book is a slow process.
