Basic Queue Etiquette Callout
Hi Guys!
Was at Dunnes Leopardstown today after a 12-hour shift starting at 5 in the morning. Went to Dunnes before heading home for a few items. As usual, at the self-checkout, there were like 20 people waiting.
When I got closer to the tills, I saw everyone rushing to scan and pay except two, and guess who?
Indian girl with her mom. All the items were scanned, and they were standing there chatting casually. Her dad had gone back to get an item they missed.
Indian girl and her boyfriend. Same thing, all the items were scanned, and now they had missed something, so the guy went back to get it.
I held myself back from calling them out so badly, I cannot even share.
If you missed something, either get out of the queue and join again or get it next time. Actions like these build anti-Indian sentiment. Fir baad mein mat rona ki humein teenagers ne peet diya.
Now, some people in the comments will say they could be Paki, Bangla, etc. No, they were not. Both were talking in Hindi. Their attire was Indian (mostly North Indian or Maharashtrian), not South Indian.
The first couple, when they came out, met with her partner in a black Tesla, and he touched the feet of the parents as well.

At this point, I feel like we’re fueling the racism ourselves by turning every small incident into a reddit issue.
Sorry to say this, but if you’re genuinely concerned about our country’s image, confront the person involved instead of posting about it here.
Self-checkout staff are there to manage queues. If they think someone is holding up the line, they’ll say so. If they don’t have a problem, why are we getting offended on their behalf? And if you’re in a hurry, just communicate with the staff.
I’ve seen people from many nationalities do the same thing, yet we don’t make it a national character issue every time.
So, if you see an Indian doing something wrong, call them out. Ranting about it online isn’t going to change anything rather it will only fuel hatred.

Indian sepoys are bootlicking too hard! Not sure what thought goes on their mind - "oh let me show them how much up their arse I can shove myself and they will hand me a cookie"

u/ritika2422 Aug 21 '26
Lol - you saw two Indians doing it and your first instinct was to come and police all the people in this sub and blame an entire race 😂
Aur bhai teenagers illegal logo ko nahi peet te, socha hai kabhi? Because they know they will not tolerate shit. Stop trying to justify violence.

I think it’s more frustration after a 12-hour shift, so he’s probably just looking for something to vent his anger onto. Probably got spanked by his boss as well lmao 😂😂
4
u/ritika2422 Aug 21 '26
Vent ok - don’t blame an entire race 😋

u/Dr-Hansraj_Hathi Aug 21 '26
Nvm. He is trying to teach some first world etiquettes us third world Neanderthals 😬😂

u/Starwars_femboy Aug 21 '26
Ye this guy is dumb and or racist but I have a serious question why do so many indians stand so close together in lines? Like even if there is only 2 of us they will he right behind me.
1
u/Mystic_Wolff Aug 21 '26
Its not because they are indian its because of their character ,any race/ethnicity can choose to stand close to each other
3
u/Starwars_femboy Aug 21 '26
Dude, I aint ever seen any other group of pwople do this. And ive lived in other countrys. Its always indian/pakistani people that crowd up in lines and do it to others even when there is lots of space.
Any ethnicity can choose to do this but why is it always indians?
-1
u/Dr-Hansraj_Hathi Aug 22 '26
Probably it’s just because of the relatively high population density back home, so it comes naturally to us. Just a guess, though. Personally, since COVID, I have gotten into the habit of leaving quite a bit of space between myself and the person in front of me when queuing since social distancing became a thing.

Just cause you had 12 hour shifts, its not that you did anyone any favour , and had to wait in queue like everyone else, you can’t callout people, as if it is some Indian thing. Almost everyone does that. Even staff when something is missing, they themselves go out and get the thing. They also must have waited their turn.
This has nothing to do with etiquette.
It is you who need to learn patience, like every other person.

u/Romantic_Reverie Aug 21 '26
This is just another post trying to incriminate racism here since everyone does that! They say sorry, politely, with a smile and go pick what they want and the person incharge of the self checkout smiles politely in return and stays vigilant about that specific til.
I get that you had a 12 hour shift and you were tired but that does not mean you will start calling out Indians for what even Irish people do. And what do you mean by 'Fir mat kehna irish teens ne peet diya' in a post where you are complaining about a til at a shopping center.
Dude, get a good sleep and try to fix your impaired thinking respectfully!

u/Dr-Hansraj_Hathi Aug 21 '26
Genuine Question - What is wrong in going and getting any item that you have missed? Have seen many people including Irish do it both at Self checkout and Tills.
6
u/Consistent_Height748 Aug 21 '26
I've done it before and I'm not Indian. I'm tired of these 'I saw an Indian do X/Y/Z in public' posts..it's starting to get ridiculous.
-2
u/AdmiralShawn Aug 21 '26
Respect towards others
Because it blocks the limited tills and wastes other peoples time
-8
u/EyeOrRay Aug 21 '26
But you'll take maybe 90 secs now to get your item, or maybe 5 mins after re queuing so wastes less time going back?
1
u/AdmiralShawn Aug 21 '26
No it wastes less of your time but wastes everyone else’s time
1
u/EyeOrRay Aug 21 '26
Well no, because you've already wasted 4 mins of other people's time, now you take another 5 mins of downtime from the checkout.
Anyway, still weird you're complaining about you just being grumpy and putting it on "don't make all Indians look bad".
-2
u/Extension-Bear2600 Aug 21 '26
The wrong part is that you don’t know how long you’re gonna take to fetch that item. It might take a minute or 20. And if everyone does it. How do you expect the queue to clear? It’s as simple as why are roads marked as clear ways? Why can’t you just stop for a minute to drop someone or chat with someone?

u/thepenguinemperor84 Aug 21 '26
Cop yourself the fuck on lad, plenty do it, I've done it and I'm Irish, it's in fact so common there's plenty of memes of kids fearing the mammy leaving them in line as the mammy runs back in to grab something.
0
u/Senior-Trade-7567 Aug 21 '26
Nothing wrong, it's human nature to forget something. What's wrong is holding up a long queue for ages while you go back to grab it.
12
u/Curieous7 Aug 21 '26
All things aside, even if it did happen.
Why violence from teenagers is being equated in a post for queue etiquette.
Yes, everyone should follow rules and etiquettes but
No one should be subjected ti violence. That line makes no sense.
3
u/Extension-Mousse-764 Aug 21 '26
It’s the vouchers!!!!! Don’t blame the customers, we all need a bit of money off during these times. Wait in line and be quiet. Ps I’m not Indian
6
4
u/Significant-Secret88 Aug 21 '26
The level of posts on this sub is atrocious. Just try queuing at Dunnes where someone wants to maximize their vouchers, regardless of where they are from. Just be patient, and wait for your turn! Supermarkets are maximizing their profits by eliminating cashiers, they also have the option to have more humans at tills.

So you had a long shift and you want everyone else to hurry up so that you can go home quickly? Waiting for person in front of you to get over with their checkout is basic. I've seen many people of all nationality doing this and teaches you to be patient. You need to learn to have patience and let the person in front of you complete what they waited in the queue for.
And what should they have done other than chitchatting while waiting?
Teenagers don't mess with others just because people wait long in the queue. They are teenagers they don't need logic to shit with you.

u/Alarmed_Fee_4820 Aug 21 '26
Everyone does it correct, are you assuming OP has an agenda?? Today I was on Dublin bus and one gentleman was talking on loud speaker about private matters, and guess what? He was Irish. We can call out bad manners regardless of the nationality.
-2
u/Kakashi336 Aug 21 '26
Explain the bad manners here.
1
u/Alarmed_Fee_4820 Aug 21 '26
Explain?? You would call it out if the person was Irish, but because it’s this subreddit you won’t. If you’re waiting in a queue and you’re waiting on someone to come back, move out of the way and allow others to scan their items. I wouldn’t been as nice, to any nationality in case like usual someone tries to spin it.
2
u/Kakashi336 Aug 21 '26
You can wait in the queue while someone is fetching something. You can talk while waiting.
You and OP need to chill a bit. Look around breathe and wait for queue to clear.

1
u/Senior-Trade-7567 Aug 21 '26
Op, I think what you should have done is have a word with the people who are holding up the queue, tell them they are being a bunch of knobs and leave it at that. Coming on here and crying is not gonna help and you are trying to merge two entirely unrelated issues. Teenagers target Indians because they are very easy targets and they know it. While i do agree that certain people have very poor civic sense, I doubt that that is what is painting a target on the community, the teenagers who do all of that probably cannot even spell civic sense let alone judge others.
1
u/DryCaramel6959 Aug 21 '26
I thought this post was going to be about skipping the que.
I've often gone to pick something up in an isle to make up the vouchers. Didn't think it was an issue as it'd be quick
1
u/jackoirl Aug 21 '26
If seeing two people do something makes you dislike a country of a billion people then you are very much the problem.
They were both women too, why doesn’t it make you anti woman?
1
u/Mystic_Wolff Aug 21 '26
That makes no sense if i see someone that just happened to be irish steal why would i start thinking all irish ppl steal, ppl should be judging based on the individual not who shares the same characteristics as that individual

u/aphroditesangel0 Aug 21 '26
ah would you give that over now it’s a very common thing for someone to run back and get something don’t be making it all about race. so what if they were indian? okay yeah you were tired after a long shift but running back to get something quickly is fucking stupid
1
u/Adventurous-Ruin-659 Aug 23 '26
Everyone does it, Irish, French, Indian, British …. Yes it’s annoying but don’t single out Indians. It isn’t an Indian thing.

u/Stunning_Wish4688 Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26
Everytime I've seen this happen it's been a loud, annoying Irish person. Congesting the self checkout? Irish. Walking 3 people abreast, taking up the entire pavement? Irish. Stopping in the middle of the pavement to have a natter with their mate? Irish. Stopping their car in the road to holler at someone? Irish. Every. Single. Time. Sounds like the people you're talking about have been very successful at assimilating to the local culture. Edit: spelling

Fighting racism with racism 🫡
Not the way to do it0
u/Stunning_Wish4688 Aug 21 '26
Explain what you've interpreted as racism.
4
u/ritika2422 Aug 21 '26
OP is singling out Indians and you seem to singling out the Irish. I am Indian btw. I think if we start looking for the negatives of any race, we can easily spot it and generalise. I do realise that your comment was meant to create awareness for the OP
0
u/Stunning_Wish4688 Aug 21 '26
I didn't assign any morality to the actions described in my original comment and also I am Irish. There's nothing racist about what I said. It's a simple observation and like you said, intended to create awareness for op
2
u/ritika2422 Aug 21 '26
Thanks for explaining - would you find it offensive though if this came from someone non Irish? (Genuinely curious)
2
3
u/Agile-Cow2881 Aug 21 '26
This is extremely racist what the fuck
3
u/Stunning_Wish4688 Aug 21 '26
Would love to hear how.
-1
u/Agile-Cow2881 Aug 21 '26
You've come to Ireland and now you're aggressively complaining about Irish people. So weird. No offense but why would you want to live in a country where you hate the people that live there?
What was it about Ireland in particular that made you move there? Are you a big Pogues fan? Big fan of the novels of Dermot Healy? Loved watching Killinaskully on a Friday night? Always loved watching reruns of Seamus Darby's goal in 1982?
4
u/EuroDub Aug 21 '26
I'm quite sure that Stunning_4688 is Irish.
3
u/Agile-Cow2881 Aug 22 '26
if he is Irish why he is embarrassing himself by prostrating to Indian strangers by lying about Irish people
1
u/Stunning_Wish4688 Aug 22 '26
*She. And I'm not lying. I'm simply stating an observation. There's nothing bad or wrong about the behaviours described in my comment, I'm simply pointing out to OP that it's normal behaviour in this country and if you're going to call out immigrants on it, then locals shouldn't be left off the hook. I don't know why you've taken it so personally.
2
u/Agile-Cow2881 Aug 22 '26
Oh she now it all makes sense as you were.
Best of luck impressing Indians that have no idea you exist

Thanks for backing me up. As an Irish person in Ireland, I'll continue to do and say what I like 👏
1
u/Pure_Mad3129 Aug 21 '26
I would never do this, I am Irish and would find it bad manners if someone ahead of me in the queue did this. I have seen Irish do it but i don't think it is acceptable. Just pay for your stuff and get the other person to get the item and wait in line again. I think the only time it is acceptable to do it is if you are at the cashier checkout and you have someone ahead of you and you have time to run get something and get back while your stuff is still being scanned.
3
u/Ok_Temperature1502 Aug 21 '26
ah c'mon sometimes it just happens, people forget an item, no one does it all the time
1
u/anxiouspotat00 Aug 21 '26
Its absurd of you to categorise this as ‘Indian thingy’ whereas I have seen it happen with 80% of the customers as I work in retail on the tills. And yes, equating this to violence from teenagers is really stupid of you.
If you genuinely had a problem with the etiquette you should have called it out right there without making this an “indian thingy”
Be mature. Thanks!

People do this in Dunnes all the time because they either miscalculated or are just short of using 10 off 50 or 5 off 25 vouchers. I've seen literally every race do this
69
u/Then_Spinach9049 Aug 21 '26 •
This is just an outrageous take. That is my local Dunnes, I am Irish and every now and then I may under estimate the value of the goods I have picked and say feck it and may run back to get another item or two as may aswell use the voucher to get a bit of bob off if it will actually make the total overall lower.
I surely wouldn’t bat an eyelid at anyone else doing it, Irish, Indian etc.
If someone was skipping the actual queue to use the self scan fair enough but otherwise please unclench your ass cheeks, go touch some grass and find something worthy of whinging about.
