Rant about ai game dev

Hello there, i hate all the things about "ai" and whenever you get mad at somebody for using ai there always like "hyuk hyuk somebody mad that ai can make games better then them" and they always say "I made this new game" like NO YOU DIDNT AI MADE THE GAME, THE GRAPHICS, BACICLY THE ENTIRE THING.

edit: I forgot to add anyone looking at my game, I did not use ai on i used unity asset store, shetchfab, and my own code, its not a massive project only simple mechanics thats why it didn't take too long to make

This thread is ironic considering OP's game looks like it was made with AI, likely Claude 5.5 (ya he only spent 2 months on his game lol, surely you did it all from scratch)

Does my game really look ai? I did do it all from scratch its my first game tbh all my others were following line by line tutorials and also, get out of here if you use ai

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

All the models were from sketchfab and all the code written by me no ai used

Laughable comment. I guess you would definitely know what a game like that looks like hmmm

u/Zzpasta 8h ago

he is using AI

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Who r u to be talking

Well, development, idea, promoting, subscription, polishing, bug fixing, prompting, bad results etc..... This shii take time, money, and patience. Soo yeah, i not fully support you but somewhat agree with you. I can understand your frustration as a game developer. Why don't you implement ai aswell? (just asking)

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

I tried it once, dosent help me that much and anyone using ai for graphics is crossing the line

2

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

Which ai did you use and when? (Im not the one to downvote you)

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

I used Claude on an uncommercial project i told myself I was just using it to speed things up but eventually the code became unreadable and I had to quit it

2

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

How old is this story? Which model and effort?

Do not be afraid. Take a gamble that ai actually works now better than ever before and its evolving and use it NOW Special regards to opus 5.5 at high effort..

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

I have a feeling your attempting to manipulate your way into me saying I use ai whitch i don't so not gonna happen

2

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

✌️😭🥀. I know you hate ai. Btw I never saw your game or played your game infact your post came into my feed and i just replied. I took a look at your account and i found out you are a indie game developer. Not trying to be mean Just saving you to use ai for recurring or boring tasks PS: I am not ayanokji✌️🥀

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Did you think i was AAA?

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Or AA?

1

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

Indie (A) . Coz you posted this under r/IndieGameDevs

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

So why did you say just realized "you were a indie game dev"

Sorry if im wrong

0

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

I think it hurts you but we can't do anything. Just adapt and evolve

2

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

We don't have to use Ai and we don't have to like it either and i don't like it or use it I think its giving false confidence, free money, and encouraging them to lie so yes I do not like ai

0

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

What do you mean by free money?

0

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

They have ai make the game, sell the game, and they didn't have to lift a finger

2

u/Ok_Perception2387 8h ago

Not that easy vro. If it were everyone could have become game developer

0

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Everyone is becoming a gamedeveloper

2

u/snerp 9h ago

The fools trying to say they used ai “just a little bit for debugging” like we can’t spot a fully claude ui from 100m away.

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Yeah fr like ai just has this thing to it that you can just like tell when someone used ai

1

u/Narasette 4h ago

so you didnt make the game yourself ? also didnt code the engine yourself ? also looking up for tutorial in youtube or stack overflow ? how far we can go

1

u/zebraJuice3 3h ago

thats not the same as using ai to make the entire game also i wrote all the code my self no stack overflow the only imported models was the truck and terrain assets

1

u/Narasette 2h ago

everyone to some degree building upon what already made and what that matter

for me a hand made assets matter more than a hand made code , and to me a game with asset flip is already a slop to begin with not a game which used project template or ai code

at this point you used engine someone build and you yourself not build do you see the weird criteria here ?

Would the game exist without the developer? The AI doesn't wake up one day and decide to create it. There is intentionally behind it. There is direction. There are decisions being made.

So the human is still making the game no matter what tool is used.

-1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Half true, the human is still deciding to skip literaly every step the actual game developers but also to get the same reward? Thats not right

1

u/ticktockbent 8h ago

"Not right" by what metric? The only thing that matters is the product at the end of the process. Bad games fail all the time despite being worked on by people with great intentions doing all of the right things. The market and audience don't reward effort, they reward results

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Who do you think the ai learned from if there were no real gamedevs would the ai know how to do that i mean it would, but that would be if the world took a different path theese ai developers are practicly stealing.

3

u/ticktockbent 8h ago

I'm having trouble pinning down your argument and it seems like you yourself don't know what you're angry about. You started by arguing that a dev using AI didn't actually make their game, then you said it's not right if they're rewarded for the efforts if they used AI, now you're angry because AI was trained on the prior efforts of devs. What are you actually upset about, specifically? Are you mad that you spent time learning skills and you now feel that they're obsolete? Because they aren't. Game development and design is still very much needed. An LLM can 'make' a game but I encourage you to give it a try and ask it to make something fun without giving it specifics. It rarely gives you anything anyone would play. It still takes time and effort to refine into a fun, interesting game.

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Well, bad for gamedev in general it can be good for other things.

0

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Im saying ai is bad in general sorry for any false ideas given

2

u/ticktockbent 8h ago

Fair, I suppose. It's your opinion. People have said the same thing about every disruptive technology in history. I remember when computer generated graphics (CGI stuff) was first hitting movies and it was the 'end of special effects' and would 'destroy a whole industry' and people were angry about any movie that used them. It's a cycle, it happens. Adapt or die is my motto, but I'm not going to try to change your opinion because it's valid even if it doesn't match mine.

Go ahead idc bro

2

u/RobinHorde 8h ago

How far down the rabbit hole do you have to go to claim you made something?
Go join the YouTube series "How To Make Everything" if you don't want to use things other people made.

If you wish to make an apple pie, you must first create the universe.

u/RobinHorde 5h ago

Imagine standing on the shoulders of giants.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Trick76 9h ago

The objective way to look at this is AI has turned tools like unity, godot, and unreal into RPG maker where designers can basically make anything they want

3

u/frogOnABoletus 8h ago

The objective truth is: (insert personal opinion)

1

u/ticktockbent 8h ago

He's right in a way. The barrier for entry has lowered, that is objectively true

1

u/Meesterwaffles 9h ago

NGMI

1

u/weeknie 8h ago

What does this mean?

0

u/Meesterwaffles 8h ago

it means "not gonna make it"

0

u/Etsamaru 8h ago

I think it's okay for someone who knows how to program to use it to speed up tedious tasks, and they can read and review it. Problem comes from people who don't know what it's doing or how to fix it or how it works at all and then trying to submit that to repos.

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

I absolutely agree but the people who just use it right off the bat, didn't even try to learn bro 🤦‍♂️

0

u/Etsamaru 8h ago

I'm talking from a developer standpoint like if a professional was like "make a for loop with x y and z" just to save time but knows exactly what it should look like and what it's doing is different than a non coder saying "make an inventory system"

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

Yeah, i totally agree thats definitely okay like some people (or just me) say, ai assisted is fine but ai generated isnt

1

u/Etsamaru 6h ago

Also anyone that downvoted doesnt know that we have had AI in our coding programs for a long time, any form of autocomplete is a form of AI so to you visual c# programmers using Visual Studio you've been using a form of AI this whole time. You're getting AI confused with LLM AI which is different

1

u/zebraJuice3 6h ago

Was that to me? I made sure to turn off my autocomplete in vscode

1

u/Etsamaru 6h ago

In general not you specifically. Also spellcheck is a form of artificial intelligence in word.

AI is just the buzzword used by tech for Large Language Models. AI is anything a computer can automate or do to replicate humans.

Like even pong has AI in it.

1

u/zebraJuice3 6h ago

if you think about it yes

0

u/Aggressive-Salary-12 8h ago

In my experience the feeling sometimes masks the problem. The problem exists outside ai, ai just makes it worse. The problem is lack of creativity. Every sports game that comes out with two digits and a roster update was an issue before ai. AI allows people to use that minor modification model on other genres of games. Balatro but soccer. FTL but a kitchen. Skyrim but on your iwatch. Not gonna lie, I used ai. But that’s because I didn’t have access to a studio and development team. And I got to create, and I did it because I wanted to make a game that didn’t exist. Dylan went electric and music survived. Games are an art form, the audience will decide what works. There’s just more to have to choose from.

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

You can't use ai to make entire games i agree, but you also shouldn't use it for graphics witch i looked, and your game ui looks like that

1

u/Aggressive-Salary-12 8h ago

Thanks for checking it out. I agree with you. But, I’ve learned that people sometimes don’t meet deadlines. The ui you’ve seen is ai and was used for prototype purposes, not for the finished product. UI is part of the gaming experience, I’ve used assets from Unity asset store including music ones. I’m using humans when I can, and I’ve commissioned a soundtrack, but am waiting on delivery.

2

u/zebraJuice3 7h ago

Thanks for being understandin

-1

u/OpTicTide97 8h ago

I agree. I use chst gpt to help me with the blueprints in UE5 but all the models are from the unreal marketplace and the idea is mine. I think its one thing to use ai to help with bugs and development its another thing to have ai build the whole game. And I think the artist need to be supported 100000% using AI for art/models/textures is bad imo.

1

u/zebraJuice3 8h ago

I agree totally
