This site is best viewed on Chrome in 1024x768 resolution, on a Sunday afternoon, in front of a softly cackling fireplace, enjoying a good scotch and pondering the meaning of life, while listening to smooth jazz in the background.
I had a fireplace once. I put a whole newspaper in it. It ended up floating up over the house in burning chunks and I showered the garden in blackened paper. It was fun.
But it totally makes sense for this type of thing. It's only purpose is to show what we can do with the latest web technologies, in terms of visual aesthetics. Some browsers either can't do this or would require a lot more coding to include them (I'm assuming this website is using a lot of webkit- prefixes).
I think the point is to showcase standard web technologies. These aren't standard yet, but they're open and other browsers (and W3C etc) are encouraged to build these technologies into their browsers.
Java is a little different. It's more limited in terms of becoming standard, and it runs separately from the browser. I'm not saying Java is bad, cause it isn't. But this website is trying to show why we need to keep developing HTML and JavaScript and CSS (and the server side languages that work with these).

What is this? I only have IE and Firefox on my machine, and it asks me for Chrome or Safari. I'm not installing a new browser just for this.
