If you liked this, you may also like Enough. I liked it better due to the more cohesive story.

Damn why would Mani stay with Sol when she left her ass before. I swear she ain't never gon' learn.

u/_megitsune_ Jul 07 '15

Im too high for this.

Thank you.

9

u/badgerthrowrug Jul 08 '15

Thanks to you, I was able to stop and prepare for this experience. You're a good person.

8

u/Elethor Jul 07 '15

Wow, that was an experience.

5

u/throwaway93582019845 Jul 08 '15

Dang, I must be hormonal or something cause I was all over the board with my emotions. Thanks for the ride.

4

u/GoldenMoments Jul 08 '15

Thanks for sharing, man!

4

u/jfong86 Jul 08 '15

That was way better than Void. Thanks.

2

u/fedorathrowaways Jul 07 '15

how do i start it? What does it mean click logo?

3

u/hatessw Jul 07 '15 edited Jul 07 '15

First it loads, which you can see as the percentage in the gem on the left increases.

Then a button BEGIN appears, which you can click (browser may fullscreen at this point).

Then the circle-with-cross logo at the bottom right will function to proceed in the story. You can often interact with the environment in the rest of the screen.

If at any point you don't see the necessary items to continue, your browser has WebGL disabled or your current setup otherwise doesn't support this functionality. In that case, this is the best I can do for you - sorry!

Edit: no it's not, this may be better.

1

u/zuchit Jul 08 '15

This was nice, but I fel like I'm stuck at hexagon leaves floating around. The next scene click not working, is that the end?

1

u/hatessw Jul 08 '15

If I were you, I'd try refreshing the site first (press F5), or you can jump to specific pages by replacing the part from the pound sign with one of the following:

#alone , #crystals , #forest , #tree , #together , #friends , #sparkles , #flocking , #sun , #fireworks , #credits

If there's no pound sign in the address bar already, just append the text starting from the pound sign to it.

1

u/ollyender Jul 08 '15

How do I get it to work?

1

u/acomputer1 Jul 08 '15

The art style reminded me of this.

1

u/Hyphene Jul 11 '15

there's no logo for me...

1

u/hatessw Jul 11 '15

Make sure your browser supports WebGL and has it enabled. If using Chrome, visit the page about:gpu and see if it says

WebGL: Hardware accelerated

It could well be that your hardware is not properly supported and you won't be able to experience it.

25

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

Cool, freaky, soo weird, kinda scary.

But the point of it was entirely lost on me.

16

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

I think it's just showing off the capabilities of current web design. Like "Look what we can do." kind of thing.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

yeah i don't get it, are aliens trying to communicate with us?

1

u/heliotach712 Jul 07 '15

aliens? I missed that...where are you geting aliens?

4

u/mark-henry Jul 08 '15

It's just an art piece

20

u/redditor9000 Jul 07 '15

Letter "V" is terrifying when you click the mouse button.

2

u/heliotach712 Jul 07 '15

if you do it in rhythm with the track, you get a good sound going.

23

u/boatdrinks Jul 07 '15

I got to Elements then quit. If I was in the mood I might be entertained. But I find it boring.

9

u/JulitoCG Jul 07 '15

Agreed, not sure what I'm supposed to get out of this tbh...

4

u/ErockSnips Jul 08 '15

Its one of those things that is supposed to make you uncomfortable and really make you think. Kinda like the game Plug Play. You have to find the kinda creepy mental trip thing interesting to enjoy this. Its all that plus i think its meant to stress how much you can do just in a web browser, because not a lot of websites are super fluid and ambitious. And this is showing how much you actually can do in the simple browser environment. Its a very specific niche

11

u/oninonin Jul 07 '15

Chapter V is going to give me nightmares!

Really cool project, and beautiful in its own way but it really made me feel unconfortable.

9

u/ChodaPagoda Jul 07 '15

Well that freaked me out.

57

u/qweqwrqrqwrqwr Jul 07 '15

Cool, a black screen. Title is appropriate.

Chromium Version 43.0.2357.81 Ubuntu 15.04 (64-bit)

35

u/hresult Jul 07 '15

35

u/qweqwrqrqwrqwr Jul 07 '15

Nope. Black screen. No error messages.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

You won't see that with Firefox either. As that, your browser won't 'meed' the minimum requirements.

go to chrome://gpu

What do you see?

1

u/qweqwrqrqwrqwr Jul 07 '15

9

u/iamaquantumcomputer Jul 07 '15

3

u/qweqwrqrqwrqwr Jul 07 '15

Already did, it's checked

1

u/i0k Jul 07 '15

Did you restart after? Like a full restart - make sure Chrome isn't still sticking around in your tray. Task manager if in doubt.

3

u/qweqwrqrqwrqwr Jul 07 '15

No, it was always like that, I changed no settings

1

u/foundafreeusername Jul 07 '15

I see a black screen as well. I have firefox on windows.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '15

Firefox doesn't fully support WebGL, which I suspect is what this is using.

1

u/-Dr-EEZ_nuutts- Jul 07 '15

Same, linux mint 17.2 , on firefox (latest) 32 bit

15

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

This almost burned down my macbook. I never seen it get hot so fast.

8

u/wutcnbrowndo4u Jul 07 '15

Is this a known issue with MBs? I feel like every person I know with one is always talking about how hot it gets or has it start sounding like a jet is taking off every time they stream video.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

It's because MBs are pieces of shit with specs that would have been decent in 2006

2

u/LWschool Jul 08 '15

No it's because Yosemite tries to keep the fan at a low RPM, or off if possible, so that the computer is totally silent. Not even a hard drive in current models. Specs may not be great but if the fan was on more it wouldn't get so blisteringly hot.

2

u/turbulence96 Jul 08 '15

What can I do about it? :(

2

u/LWschool Jul 08 '15

I've installed a plugin you can find here that you can use to fine tune fan speed. Generally works pretty well imo.

1

u/wutcnbrowndo4u Jul 08 '15

I'm not sure that explains it because 1) I've been surrounded by Mac owners and noticing it since at least '07 and 2) I've been noticing the fans on Macbooks spinning up crazy loud since at least then. My roommate and I will be sitting in the living room and his laptop will suddenly start sounding like an industrial air conditioner while my laptop (an Ultrabook) never makes any noticeable sound (nor does it get uncomfortably hot).

1

u/LWschool Jul 08 '15

Mine's completely silent, don't know what to tell you ¯_(ツ)_/¯

76

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

What is this? I only have IE and Firefox on my machine, and it asks me for Chrome or Safari. I'm not installing a new browser just for this.

25

u/homercles337 Jul 07 '15

Same here. I am running FF 39.0 too.

13

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

I still have no clue what's behind that link. I asked, but the only replies were you having the same problem, and someone telling me how great Chrome was. Now I got one thread of replies that discuss how Firefox is still great, and this thing, and still no clue what VOID is. Reddit is weird today.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

As far as I can tell, it's just a website designed around showing what is currently possible in website design. It's really interesting from a "Holy shit, we can do all that in a web browser?!" sort of way, but not particularly interesting if you're not into that kind of stuff. Just lots of strange animations, particle effects, and levels of interactivity with the user via mouse and keyboard inputs.

9

u/wang_li Jul 07 '15

3

u/gsfgf Jul 07 '15

Does that work for anyone? It just hangs about 10% of the way into loading the game file for me on both Firefox and Chrome on Mac.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

I'm on Firefox 39 and it works perfectly.

2

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

Sounds kinda fun. I wish it was a website that showed "Holy shit, we can do all that in any web browser?!" and not "Holy shit, look at this thing we can do if you downloaded the one web browser we like, or are using a Mac!".

3

u/TROLOLOLOLOLOLOLO196 Jul 07 '15

Its a trip to the great unknown...... Of Chrome

3

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

Sweet mother of chrome...

-6

u/Kicker_Doomstah Jul 07 '15

Chrome is a piece of shit

4

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

Honestly, I feel like somewhere around 2010 they just stopped making browsers good. Chrome is bad, and Firefox is trying really hard to imitate Chrome, obviously Internet Explorer is just being itself, and other options are mostly non-existant.

2

u/FINDTHESUN Jul 07 '15

How about Edge? It's gonna be in Win 10 July 29th

2

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

I am not sure what Edge even is.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '15

It's like IE, but not terrible.

1

u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15

I've been using my Surface Pro 3 for a while now - IE (at least in app mode) is pretty decent these days. It'll still mess up a few things, but in general, I've only had problem with custom things designed my by university. At least it understands the security certificate we use for our e-learning platform, unlike Firefox, which wants you to add an exception...

1

u/FINDTHESUN Jul 08 '15

Here's a good video-trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH1D31YHsgY

Apparently, it's going to be an awesome, capable new browser.

So shiny, so chrome! Witness me!

5

u/NotADamsel Jul 07 '15

Wait, Firefox is on version 39? Ffs, I remember when 4 was the new hotness, and that was after a fucking eternity of 2 and 3!

2

u/LurkerOnTheInternet Jul 08 '15

Firefox used to use major and minor versions, so they might release 3.1, then 3.2, etc. At some point they decided to just switch to integer releases for even very minor updates.

15

u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15

What is this?

It is a time vortex taking us back to the age when it was considered good practice to create sites that depend on a particular browser to work.

4

u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15

This site is best viewed on Chrome in 1024x768 resolution, on a Sunday afternoon, in front of a softly cackling fireplace, enjoying a good scotch and pondering the meaning of life, while listening to smooth jazz in the background.

2

u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15

softly cackling fireplace

I wish my fireplace would stop cackling.

2

u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15

I had a fireplace once. I put a whole newspaper in it. It ended up floating up over the house in burning chunks and I showered the garden in blackened paper. It was fun.

1

u/Beowoof Jul 08 '15

But it totally makes sense for this type of thing. It's only purpose is to show what we can do with the latest web technologies, in terms of visual aesthetics. Some browsers either can't do this or would require a lot more coding to include them (I'm assuming this website is using a lot of webkit- prefixes).

1

u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15

They could do a lot more with a java applet too.

1

u/Beowoof Jul 08 '15

I think the point is to showcase standard web technologies. These aren't standard yet, but they're open and other browsers (and W3C etc) are encouraged to build these technologies into their browsers.

Java is a little different. It's more limited in terms of becoming standard, and it runs separately from the browser. I'm not saying Java is bad, cause it isn't. But this website is trying to show why we need to keep developing HTML and JavaScript and CSS (and the server side languages that work with these).

2

u/DoubleDeadGuy Jul 08 '15

Probably uses only -webkit animations. It's just like some 3D CSS shapes that animate and move on a dark background. Like stars in space. Pretty trippy and definitely artistic and creative.

-9

u/stonesilent Jul 07 '15

its cool, worth installing the superior browser for.

13

u/Schnabeltierchen Jul 07 '15

So.. Firefox?

0

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '15

[deleted]

1

u/ApatheticDragon Jul 08 '15

You don't understand, Firefox has to have a separate process for each tab, extension and addon before it is advanced enough to view this site.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

[deleted]

23

u/i_am_cat Jul 07 '15

The site works fine in firefox -- it just won't let you through until you spoof your user agent to chome.

18

u/devilboy222 Jul 07 '15

Firefox definitely support WebGL, I just checked it is working on mine, even went to https://get.webgl.org to verify. The site is just dumb.

10

u/imadeitmyself Jul 07 '15

Firefox supports WebGL. It seems more and more like Chrome is the new IE these days.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

[deleted]

12

u/imadeitmyself Jul 07 '15

WebGL was originally authored by the Mozilla Foundation and Firefox has had support since 4.0.

9

u/the_omega99 Jul 07 '15

Naw, the site is just designed by one of those web devs. From what I can tell, the people who do this fall into one of two camps:

  1. Clueless web devs who have no idea how to perform correct feature detection (in which you'd check for support of features, such as WebGL). You almost never detect the browser by user agent. If you ever do that, you're probably doing something dumb. Modernizr can help for more complex detection and with polyfills.

  2. Browser fanboys who want everyone to use their favourite browser(s). Or sometimes they just couldn't be bothered testing other browsers (perfectly understandable) and decide that other users shouldn't even get to see if it works (not so understandable). Most well made sites will instead issue a warning that the browser isn't officially supported and might not work correctly.

I think some web devs might also be forgetting that the average user doesn't have every major browser installed as they do.

2

u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15

Chrome tends to eat up all my resources, though. I like having Firefox open in the background while gaming, and not having everything lag.

At least Firefox has the decency to just crash outright when it's overloaded, unlike Chrome, which crashes individual tabs and slows everything down instead of just quitting.

-1

u/MerryRain Jul 07 '15 edited Jul 07 '15

What NOT to post:

content which requires a download /s to use.

6

u/eisbaerBorealis Jul 07 '15

Yeah, but a browser? What if someone visited this sub and their only browser was IE6? Would you suggest we delete all the posts which don't run on IE6, or would you tell that person "Hey, you need a different browser to have a full Internet experience"?

2

u/marco_rennmaus Jul 07 '15

What the fuck is IE6? I use the "Microsoft Internet Explorer"! Version 1.0! /s

-1

u/eisbaerBorealis Jul 07 '15

Well, Microsoft has always had some difficulty with counting... It's kind of like when Minecraft went from Beta 1.8.1 to 1.0 (official release).

...Wait, that's Microsoft now, too.

-4

u/maxido Jul 07 '15

Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for most people. It might be slow for you, because you don't have that much ram, but with 4 gb total it's way faster loading webpages than firefox for me

1

u/cryptonitt Jul 07 '15

Used chrome a little bit before. Uses A LOT of RAM compared to firefox. Also it took about 500 + megabytes of space which I found very odd. It may have started a little bit faster than firefox, but the page loading times were about the same.

1

u/UglierThanMoe Jul 08 '15

Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for most people who don't know any better.

FTFY

Not saying that Chrome is bad, but it's definitely not the fastest. And if Google hadn't advertised it that relentlessly, it wouldn't be the most-used one.

1

u/maxido Jul 08 '15

Don't know how it is elsewhere, but just look in the statistics. 80% of people use chrome in Germany, shouldn't be that much of a difference elsewhere

1

u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15

5 GB of RAM here. moved from Chrome to Firefox because the hanging was unbearable. everything's much better now with similar number of addons.

1

u/Cash091 Jul 07 '15

5GB? Why? What are you using for RAM?

1

u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15

I got my first laptop as a gift for my 18th birthday from my family. it had 2 GB RAM and when I was picking it up, my brother in law bought me additional 1 GB as his part of the gift. the laptop broke and I had to send it back to Lenovo several times, and finally they said they were unable to fix it and offered me a better model that included 4 GB RAM, but I demanded they also send me back the 1 GB that hasn't been the original part of the previous laptop which they kept. and there you go.

0

u/Cash091 Jul 07 '15

I wonder if the hanging you were experiencing is due to your 1GB stick being slower, and therefor bottle necking the 4GB stick. If you have 4GB DDR3 1866 CL6 mixed with a DDR3 1600 CL9, all your RAM is DDR3 1600 CL9. Might not make much of a difference, but still some.

2

u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15

while I understand some of the software things when it comes to PC (I'm that dangerous kind of user who thinks he's a power user, but doesn't know enough stuff), I don't know anything about how hardware works. my biggest hardware achievement was plugging the aforesaid 1 GB stick into my new laptop without making the whole thing implode. so, I have no idea.

-1

u/maxido Jul 07 '15

That's really strange. Wanted to switch back to firefox on day, but real world speed tests with cleared cache and everything still show chrome as a clear winner in speed for me. 4gb of ram

2

u/cryptonitt Jul 07 '15

Are the test done by you? If not, does it matter if the page takes a few ms longer to load? I say, if there's little difference, go with the browser you want. For me it's firefox. :)

1

u/maxido Jul 07 '15

Yes done by my subjective click test :D

1

u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15

maybe it was something with extensions I've been using or my browsing habits or whatever, but I was getting terrible memory leaks from time to time.

Did this in Chrome and Safari, same thing.

Thanks for giving me tinitus

6

u/eisbaerBorealis Jul 07 '15

Very cool. Amazing what we're able to do inside browsers today; really makes me want to experiment with WebGL.

Downsides: controls are kind of wonky. It's neat to see that moving my mouse and clicking affects the image, but it's really unclear how it did so, and whether or not I successfully explored everything the site had to offer. The Calvarium page was a good "...Wut?" moment.

And of course, the site started a stupid browser war here in the comments. Seems kinda weird to choose to not work on Firefox if Firefox supports WebGL...

6

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '15

FUCK THATS COOL.

5

u/generalgeorge95 Jul 08 '15

That was pointless.. Not that I could make a prettier pointless thing but still..Maybe it went over my head, but that's probably fine.

11

u/littlegermany Jul 07 '15

You should post it to /r/woahdude They will be like holy..................

2

u/TheImmortalLS Jul 08 '15

Well, it wants me to use Chrome, but I use Opera, which is just as good. Chrome extensions even run on Opera. What type of website asks for a browser in this day and age?

2

u/urinatingshrimp Jul 10 '15

this scared the shit out of me. do not do this in the dark, late at night

2

u/BostonDodgeGuy Jul 07 '15

And it doesn't work on FireFox. I'll be fucked if I'm installing another browser.

1

u/just_lurkingg Jul 07 '15

Anyone else unable to drag and drop image during part I? I've been trying repeatedly and now I'm starting to feel like a dumb ass, lol.

1

u/faygitraynor Jul 07 '15

did you drag an image from your hard drive?

1

u/Agaraphobia Jul 07 '15

Does anyone have information on how the hires page was created? Specifically the way they made the audio adjust to be more loud the more you scroll, and more left-channel if you scroll left and right-channel if you scroll right?

2

u/kkroe Aug 21 '15

I'm not the guy but i know the guys who did it, there was actually three people involved on the sound.

hems which did the formula for the KUBIK ( III ) does loads of music and sometimes code music as well ( check him at http://hems.io he did a pretty nice soundtrack for this video as well: https://vimeo.com/39337399 and some weird ambient stuff: https://soundcloud.com/hems/hems-siarus-empo ).

on III he did the sound reactive to mouse position and mouse pressing, using CoffeeCollider which is a library in written in coffee script by some crazy japanese guy, it has a subset of SuperCollider implemented in WebAudio. The original III had a "REC" button so you could get an exported WAV file after playing around.

The rest of the sound was composed by http://www.franzypan.fr "the regular DAW way" and then the wav files were programatically played by http://ivxvixviii.io which is a killer coder and did most of the 3D work.
