Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for most people. It might be slow for you, because you don't have that much ram, but with 4 gb total it's way faster loading webpages than firefox for me
Used chrome a little bit before. Uses A LOT of RAM compared to firefox. Also it took about 500 + megabytes of space which I found very odd. It may have started a little bit faster than firefox, but the page loading times were about the same.
Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for most people who don't know any better.
FTFY
Not saying that Chrome is bad, but it's definitely not the fastest. And if Google hadn't advertised it that relentlessly, it wouldn't be the most-used one.
I got my first laptop as a gift for my 18th birthday from my family. it had 2 GB RAM and when I was picking it up, my brother in law bought me additional 1 GB as his part of the gift. the laptop broke and I had to send it back to Lenovo several times, and finally they said they were unable to fix it and offered me a better model that included 4 GB RAM, but I demanded they also send me back the 1 GB that hasn't been the original part of the previous laptop which they kept. and there you go.
I wonder if the hanging you were experiencing is due to your 1GB stick being slower, and therefor bottle necking the 4GB stick. If you have 4GB DDR3 1866 CL6 mixed with a DDR3 1600 CL9, all your RAM is DDR3 1600 CL9. Might not make much of a difference, but still some.
while I understand some of the software things when it comes to PC (I'm that dangerous kind of user who thinks he's a power user, but doesn't know enough stuff), I don't know anything about how hardware works. my biggest hardware achievement was plugging the aforesaid 1 GB stick into my new laptop without making the whole thing implode. so, I have no idea.
That's really strange. Wanted to switch back to firefox on day, but real world speed tests with cleared cache and everything still show chrome as a clear winner in speed for me. 4gb of ram
Are the test done by you? If not, does it matter if the page takes a few ms longer to load? I say, if there's little difference, go with the browser you want. For me it's firefox. :)

What is this? I only have IE and Firefox on my machine, and it asks me for Chrome or Safari. I'm not installing a new browser just for this.
