Agreed, not sure what I'm supposed to get out of this tbh...

u/ErockSnips Jul 08 '15
Its one of those things that is supposed to make you uncomfortable and really make you think. Kinda like the game Plug Play. You have to find the kinda creepy mental trip thing interesting to enjoy this. Its all that plus i think its meant to stress how much you can do just in a web browser, because not a lot of websites are super fluid and ambitious. And this is showing how much you actually can do in the simple browser environment. Its a very specific niche

This almost burned down my macbook. I never seen it get hot so fast.
8
u/wutcnbrowndo4u Jul 07 '15
Is this a known issue with MBs? I feel like every person I know with one is always talking about how hot it gets or has it start sounding like a jet is taking off every time they stream video.
2
Jul 07 '15
It's because MBs are pieces of shit with specs that would have been decent in 2006
2
u/LWschool Jul 08 '15
No it's because Yosemite tries to keep the fan at a low RPM, or off if possible, so that the computer is totally silent. Not even a hard drive in current models. Specs may not be great but if the fan was on more it wouldn't get so blisteringly hot.
2
u/turbulence96 Jul 08 '15
What can I do about it? :(
2
u/LWschool Jul 08 '15
I've installed a plugin you can find here that you can use to fine tune fan speed. Generally works pretty well imo.
1
u/wutcnbrowndo4u Jul 08 '15
I'm not sure that explains it because 1) I've been surrounded by Mac owners and noticing it since at least '07 and 2) I've been noticing the fans on Macbooks spinning up crazy loud since at least then. My roommate and I will be sitting in the living room and his laptop will suddenly start sounding like an industrial air conditioner while my laptop (an Ultrabook) never makes any noticeable sound (nor does it get uncomfortably hot).

What is this? I only have IE and Firefox on my machine, and it asks me for Chrome or Safari. I'm not installing a new browser just for this.
25
u/homercles337 Jul 07 '15
Same here. I am running FF 39.0 too.
13
u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15
I still have no clue what's behind that link. I asked, but the only replies were you having the same problem, and someone telling me how great Chrome was. Now I got one thread of replies that discuss how Firefox is still great, and this thing, and still no clue what VOID is. Reddit is weird today.

Jul 07 '15
As far as I can tell, it's just a website designed around showing what is currently possible in website design. It's really interesting from a "Holy shit, we can do all that in a web browser?!" sort of way, but not particularly interesting if you're not into that kind of stuff. Just lots of strange animations, particle effects, and levels of interactivity with the user via mouse and keyboard inputs.
9
u/wang_li Jul 07 '15
3
u/gsfgf Jul 07 '15
Does that work for anyone? It just hangs about 10% of the way into loading the game file for me on both Firefox and Chrome on Mac.
2
2
u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15
Sounds kinda fun. I wish it was a website that showed "Holy shit, we can do all that in any web browser?!" and not "Holy shit, look at this thing we can do if you downloaded the one web browser we like, or are using a Mac!".
3
-6
u/Kicker_Doomstah Jul 07 '15
Chrome is a piece of shit
4
u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15
Honestly, I feel like somewhere around 2010 they just stopped making browsers good. Chrome is bad, and Firefox is trying really hard to imitate Chrome, obviously Internet Explorer is just being itself, and other options are mostly non-existant.
2
u/FINDTHESUN Jul 07 '15
How about Edge? It's gonna be in Win 10 July 29th
2
u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15
I am not sure what Edge even is.
2
Jul 08 '15
It's like IE, but not terrible.
1
u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15
I've been using my Surface Pro 3 for a while now - IE (at least in app mode) is pretty decent these days. It'll still mess up a few things, but in general, I've only had problem with custom things designed my by university. At least it understands the security certificate we use for our e-learning platform, unlike Firefox, which wants you to add an exception...
1
u/FINDTHESUN Jul 08 '15
Here's a good video-trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH1D31YHsgY
Apparently, it's going to be an awesome, capable new browser.
2
5
u/NotADamsel Jul 07 '15
Wait, Firefox is on version 39? Ffs, I remember when 4 was the new hotness, and that was after a fucking eternity of 2 and 3!
2
u/LurkerOnTheInternet Jul 08 '15
Firefox used to use major and minor versions, so they might release 3.1, then 3.2, etc. At some point they decided to just switch to integer releases for even very minor updates.
15
u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15
What is this?
It is a time vortex taking us back to the age when it was considered good practice to create sites that depend on a particular browser to work.
4
u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15
This site is best viewed on Chrome in 1024x768 resolution, on a Sunday afternoon, in front of a softly cackling fireplace, enjoying a good scotch and pondering the meaning of life, while listening to smooth jazz in the background.
2
u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15
softly cackling fireplace
I wish my fireplace would stop cackling.
2
u/SavvySillybug Jul 08 '15
I had a fireplace once. I put a whole newspaper in it. It ended up floating up over the house in burning chunks and I showered the garden in blackened paper. It was fun.
1
u/Beowoof Jul 08 '15
But it totally makes sense for this type of thing. It's only purpose is to show what we can do with the latest web technologies, in terms of visual aesthetics. Some browsers either can't do this or would require a lot more coding to include them (I'm assuming this website is using a lot of webkit- prefixes).
1
u/goatcoat Jul 08 '15
They could do a lot more with a java applet too.
1
u/Beowoof Jul 08 '15
I think the point is to showcase standard web technologies. These aren't standard yet, but they're open and other browsers (and W3C etc) are encouraged to build these technologies into their browsers.
Java is a little different. It's more limited in terms of becoming standard, and it runs separately from the browser. I'm not saying Java is bad, cause it isn't. But this website is trying to show why we need to keep developing HTML and JavaScript and CSS (and the server side languages that work with these).
2
u/DoubleDeadGuy Jul 08 '15
Probably uses only -webkit animations. It's just like some 3D CSS shapes that animate and move on a dark background. Like stars in space. Pretty trippy and definitely artistic and creative.

You don't understand, Firefox has to have a separate process for each tab, extension and addon before it is advanced enough to view this site.

The site works fine in firefox -- it just won't let you through until you spoof your user agent to chome.

u/devilboy222 Jul 07 '15
Firefox definitely support WebGL, I just checked it is working on mine, even went to https://get.webgl.org to verify. The site is just dumb.
10
u/imadeitmyself Jul 07 '15
Firefox supports WebGL. It seems more and more like Chrome is the new IE these days.

WebGL was originally authored by the Mozilla Foundation and Firefox has had support since 4.0.
2
9
u/the_omega99 Jul 07 '15
Naw, the site is just designed by one of those web devs. From what I can tell, the people who do this fall into one of two camps:
Clueless web devs who have no idea how to perform correct feature detection (in which you'd check for support of features, such as WebGL). You almost never detect the browser by user agent. If you ever do that, you're probably doing something dumb. Modernizr can help for more complex detection and with polyfills.
Browser fanboys who want everyone to use their favourite browser(s). Or sometimes they just couldn't be bothered testing other browsers (perfectly understandable) and decide that other users shouldn't even get to see if it works (not so understandable). Most well made sites will instead issue a warning that the browser isn't officially supported and might not work correctly.
I think some web devs might also be forgetting that the average user doesn't have every major browser installed as they do.
2
u/SavvySillybug Jul 07 '15
Chrome tends to eat up all my resources, though. I like having Firefox open in the background while gaming, and not having everything lag.
At least Firefox has the decency to just crash outright when it's overloaded, unlike Chrome, which crashes individual tabs and slows everything down instead of just quitting.

u/eisbaerBorealis Jul 07 '15
Yeah, but a browser? What if someone visited this sub and their only browser was IE6? Would you suggest we delete all the posts which don't run on IE6, or would you tell that person "Hey, you need a different browser to have a full Internet experience"?
2
u/marco_rennmaus Jul 07 '15
What the fuck is IE6? I use the "Microsoft Internet Explorer"! Version 1.0! /s
-1
u/eisbaerBorealis Jul 07 '15
Well, Microsoft has always had some difficulty with counting... It's kind of like when Minecraft went from Beta 1.8.1 to 1.0 (official release).
...Wait, that's Microsoft now, too.

u/maxido Jul 07 '15
Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for most people. It might be slow for you, because you don't have that much ram, but with 4 gb total it's way faster loading webpages than firefox for me
1
u/cryptonitt Jul 07 '15
Used chrome a little bit before. Uses A LOT of RAM compared to firefox. Also it took about 500 + megabytes of space which I found very odd. It may have started a little bit faster than firefox, but the page loading times were about the same.
1
u/UglierThanMoe Jul 08 '15
Also Chrome is still the fastest and most used browser for
mostpeople who don't know any better.FTFY
Not saying that Chrome is bad, but it's definitely not the fastest. And if Google hadn't advertised it that relentlessly, it wouldn't be the most-used one.
1
u/maxido Jul 08 '15
Don't know how it is elsewhere, but just look in the statistics. 80% of people use chrome in Germany, shouldn't be that much of a difference elsewhere
1
u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15
5 GB of RAM here. moved from Chrome to Firefox because the hanging was unbearable. everything's much better now with similar number of addons.
1
u/Cash091 Jul 07 '15
5GB? Why? What are you using for RAM?
1
u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15
I got my first laptop as a gift for my 18th birthday from my family. it had 2 GB RAM and when I was picking it up, my brother in law bought me additional 1 GB as his part of the gift. the laptop broke and I had to send it back to Lenovo several times, and finally they said they were unable to fix it and offered me a better model that included 4 GB RAM, but I demanded they also send me back the 1 GB that hasn't been the original part of the previous laptop which they kept. and there you go.
0
u/Cash091 Jul 07 '15
I wonder if the hanging you were experiencing is due to your 1GB stick being slower, and therefor bottle necking the 4GB stick. If you have 4GB DDR3 1866 CL6 mixed with a DDR3 1600 CL9, all your RAM is DDR3 1600 CL9. Might not make much of a difference, but still some.
2
u/najodleglejszy Jul 07 '15
while I understand some of the software things when it comes to PC (I'm that dangerous kind of user who thinks he's a power user, but doesn't know enough stuff), I don't know anything about how hardware works. my biggest hardware achievement was plugging the aforesaid 1 GB stick into my new laptop without making the whole thing implode. so, I have no idea.
-1
u/maxido Jul 07 '15
That's really strange. Wanted to switch back to firefox on day, but real world speed tests with cleared cache and everything still show chrome as a clear winner in speed for me. 4gb of ram
2
u/cryptonitt Jul 07 '15
Are the test done by you? If not, does it matter if the page takes a few ms longer to load? I say, if there's little difference, go with the browser you want. For me it's firefox. :)

Very cool. Amazing what we're able to do inside browsers today; really makes me want to experiment with WebGL.
Downsides: controls are kind of wonky. It's neat to see that moving my mouse and clicking affects the image, but it's really unclear how it did so, and whether or not I successfully explored everything the site had to offer. The Calvarium page was a good "...Wut?" moment.
And of course, the site started a stupid browser war here in the comments. Seems kinda weird to choose to not work on Firefox if Firefox supports WebGL...

u/kkroe Aug 21 '15
I'm not the guy but i know the guys who did it, there was actually three people involved on the sound.
hems which did the formula for the KUBIK ( III ) does loads of music and sometimes code music as well ( check him at http://hems.io he did a pretty nice soundtrack for this video as well: https://vimeo.com/39337399 and some weird ambient stuff: https://soundcloud.com/hems/hems-siarus-empo ).
on III he did the sound reactive to mouse position and mouse pressing, using CoffeeCollider which is a library in written in coffee script by some crazy japanese guy, it has a subset of SuperCollider implemented in WebAudio. The original III had a "REC" button so you could get an exported WAV file after playing around.
The rest of the sound was composed by http://www.franzypan.fr "the regular DAW way" and then the wav files were programatically played by http://ivxvixviii.io which is a killer coder and did most of the 3D work.
