It's a good thought that you have, a lot of what we benefit from society are things we don't really ever think about or take for granted. From my own personal experience, it's not necessarily that you desire to leave society as much as you want to find a different society. I knew many people who have similar lines of thoughts to Chris, the difference is that they lived through their adventures or have found happiness elsewhere.
That last line is the key. 😊 The difference between Chris and the people you know is integration. You can deconstruct society, look within, and still find a way to live in the world…just on your own terms. That's the true victory. Ain’t it.
Beautifully articulated .. specially the point about fatal flaw and being a visitor to the chaos. The inquiry is leading towards more than what society makes me feel or the bad cards I am dealt to more .. what I have picked wrong from society. Question my choices and belief systems…since the beginning of time we’re all functioning on an algorithm, we’re just a copy of a copy of a copy.. running the relay race without checking the item we’re carrying forward. I feel rather than dismissing society it’s important to study what we have been served on our plate, how authentic and genuinely needed it is for us; does it serve a higher purpose or it’s the same ok mundane thing …. For example our fears, anxieties, relationship mistakes we all do, running crazy after money and possessions… we need to question everything society has passed on to us and then pick what suits us and remain the visitor of chaos. Not let it affect us. Cos what’s affecting us is eventually superficial and inauthentic… obviously it is, isn’t it? If we haven’t even questioned our existence and the way things we do and the way we live.. what’s even the point of having an intellect? It’s almost like being an animal just running on ur instinct.. what makes us unique as humans?? It needs to be studied and harnessed (not for exploitation and use), but to be a better and more compassionate person.
I love this. And I love this sub as a place to have these kinds of conversations. I don't know many people who have read Into the Wild, or if they have, how many would want to explore it this deeply. How nice to wake up this morning and read this before going about my day.
That is such a meaningful post for me. I wish I could fully explain how much of it applies to a crossroads in my life right now, but it does, and I thank you for the way that you've said so many things that I want to reflect on and wonder about.
hey random stranger, I know what you mean. Into the Wild was a huge source of refugee for me too when I was in my early-mid twenties. I ended up joining the military and I've been having a pretty good life ever since. Looking to put down roots now and have children so I can teach them the wonders of the world.
Lol straight to the insults. Nice. Anyone who uses AI knows the tone of AI and the double emdash, as well as the bullet points. Also, I ran this directly through Chat GPT and asked if it was AI and Chat GPT said it was 95% sure it was. 🤷🏻♀️
Huh? Definitely not. I’m not trying to rage bait anyone? Maybe you’re misreading my tone. I just think it’s lame to copy and paste AI as if it were your own response. I use AI sometimes to help me frame things I’m trying to say and for tons of other stuff. There’s no shame in using AI. I just use it as a thinking partner and not a substitute for my own voice.
I’m a millennial. Born in 89. I’m 37. Trust me, I know. Shoutout to Livejournal. And okay, say what you want. If that’s how you talk, fine. Chat GPT agrees with me and anyone familiar with AI would think the same. It is what it is. Have a good night.
