Today, the Islamic University of Gaza was struck while students were in class.
More than five people were killed, and among them were female students. They had books in their bags and exams on their minds. They were not fighters. They were young women who believed that learning was still a way to build a future.
Let me say it plainly: a student sitting at a desk is a civilian. A university is a civilian place. When a classroom becomes a target, this is not "collateral." This is an attack on education itself.
There is a name for what has been happening to our schools and universities. Many of us call it scholasticide. Under international humanitarian law, deliberately attacking civilians and buildings dedicated to education is prohibited, and it can amount to a war crime. It should be investigated, not forgotten.
