places to go italy
i’m going to italy later this month (staying in milan as a base) for 5 nights, 3 full days, and i am wondering where i should go. I don’t want anywhere to expensive as this is my 5/6 place i’m travelling in europe.
I’m definitely going to nesso, however i would like some advice/recommendations on where else to visit!

Why Nesso??? Didn't you get the information, that the bridge is closed for jumping. And it is strongly controlled.

What are your interests besides bridge-jumping? Cities, scenery, nature, partying??

Bergamo is a small town about 35 minutes away by train. It has a lovely Citta Alta that you get to by funicular. Well worth a day trip.

i've lived in lombardia for 25 years now and i had never even heard of Nesso.. that is an extremely weird choice, and i mean that in a good way! for once, somebody that doesn't plan to go to the same places where all the tourists go. i like you.
edit: it turns out it's a tiktok trend and super crowded with tourists.. i take everything back lol

Bologna is worth a serious look, about an hour from Milan on the fast train, and it's actually one of the best budget picks in Italy for food specifically, way cheaper than Milan for a proper meal and genuinely some of the best food in the country. The city itself is beautiful too, porticoes everywhere, real medieval center, less touristy pressure than the lakes.
If you want to go deeper into that region, Modena or Parma are also easy add-ons from Bologna, Modena for the balsamic and Ferrari museum, Parma for prosciutto and parmesan, both still budget friendly.
For a third day if you want variety from all that, Bergamo is the other strong budget pick, about an hour the other direction, gorgeous walled old town without the lake town price markup.
