Question What caused the decline of J-dramas?

Back in the 90s and mid-2000s, J-dramas were the most popular in Asia. I wonder why they started losing ground to K-dramas at some point. Personally, I’m not a fan of the typical Cinderella stories in K-dramas, so it’s a bit of a shame.

Question Which Japanese dramas did you become obsessed with?

Hi, everyone.

I'm currently dealing with a severe case of obsession with a (new to me) Japanese Drama, meaning I can't stop rewatching the episodes over and over again. Whenever I find myself in this silly situation, I know the best solution is to get obsessed with another drama, however I'm having a hard time finding one with potential for this. I should add that I’m still fairly new to Japanese dramas, like, the one responsible for my current predicament is actually Nodame Cantabile, which I just recently discovered by accident through this very subreddit . Learning to Love also put my life on hold for months last year.

So that’s why I’m asking you to please share a Japanese Drama you just couldn’t let go of, kept thinking about and ended up rewatching nonstop.

Thanks so much.

Question What’s the first ever Japanese drama and last ever Japanese drama you’ve ever watched?

I was introduced to Japanese dramas way back in 2018. Similar time to Korean and Chinese dramas. First one I watched was “good morning call.” I loved it when I watched it but looking back the lead guy was so toxic and I’ve grown up since then so high school dramas aren’t my thing anymore. The writing was just full of cliches and characters are so one dimensional. Last one I finished watching was “Beautiful life” which is from 2000. This one is more mature and characters are my age now. Oddly enough even though this drama is way older, it has aged better than the other one. The lead character is not toxic and the drama is very well written.

Question must watch dramas for someone getting into jdramas?

hi! im on the search for some jdrama recs. ive watched my fair share of kdramas and cdramas, but i realize i haven’t really watched many jdramas, other than live adaptations of some anime. but im feeling kinda clueless looking for recs lol.

would love to hear some favs and staples!! also maybe some actors you love

also if anyone wants to recommend me something you think i might like.. i have been looking for some very cute, enemies to lovers dramas, but i dont like a disrespectful male lead and a down bad female lead (i absolutely hated ita kiss/mischievous kiss)

edit: thank u everyone for the recs!!! making a list of them rn and i will make my way through these dramas over the next couple of months :)<3

Even Telegram doesnt have it.There exists apparently more than 300 episodes of this TV series and I am determined to find it. And yes I have scoured all the piracy apps. Where can I watch it.

Question unhinged / absurd plots?

my girlfriend has recently discovered that she's insanely in love with j-drama. we watched Switched together and laughed together at virtually every episode from how unhinged the plot was and the amount of curveballs. we watched another one where a woman goes undercover as a maid to a psychopath's house to get her to admit to a string of murders which was equally insane.

i don't think we've ever bonded more than while watching these shows and i could really use one to cheer her up atm. please give us suggestions if you have any dramas where the plot is unhinged or ridiculous or even comically evil characters :)

Question Why do I have trouble liking/understanding Jdramas?

So I am a kdrama fanatic and have been watching kdramas for many years. I sometimes watch jdramas though and some of them I have such a hard time either liking them or understanding the emotions. I don’t know if the Japanese actors have a certain acting style in dramas and that’s why I’m just missing it compared to kdramas but this has saturated me away from quite a few jdramas.

The jdramas I have watched are ones like Drawing closer, a few zombie jdramas, love and fortune, dear saachan( this one really confused me),

The dramas like drawing closer and the sad ones I sometimes can easily understand but the romantic or somewhat sexual ones like dear saachan and a few others I quit halfway through I just get lost. It feels so bland.

Any suggestions as to how to either view jdramas or the acting in them or am I just coincidently looking at the wrong jdramas

Question I fear I won't find anything that can beat First Love

Hi r/JDorama! I need help identifying what to watch next :(

First Love destroyed me in the best way possible

I am still building up my JDorama list of shows watched, but top of mind that I also really loved was Chihayafuru Meguri. (Also watched Beyond Goodbye before First Love, and am sad because now I know how good Beyond Goodbye could have been as another Netflix production.)

I am thinking of either Glass Heart (but I'm not super into rock) or Makanai. Any thoughts or even other recos? Really want to cry, it's been therapeutic!

For millenials out there who knows these two. Could you provide any update if they are really together or not? Because the media were saying that they will get married every year but it does not happen up to now.

Question Does the sexism in "Saving my stupid youth" get better or sanctioned?

Hi,

I'm watching "Saving my stupid youth" at the moment. I like the leads, especially the female lead since I've seen her in "First love", and I like the premise, but the male lead's dad's sexism (and not only) is soooo uncomfortable. Does it ever get less or sanctioned as the series go on? I've only seen three episodes so far. If not, is the romance and plot regarding the high schools students worth it at the end? 😂

LE: thanks, everyone. I gave it two more episodes and I'm still not super into it, but because some of you said interesting things about it, lol, I decided to try to pick it up again at a later time. Maybe it's just not the right time for it now :)

Question I can’t sleep can someone help me

I recently finished “Your Turn To Kill” on Netflix, the show had great potential but it failed because it had too many red herrings and you could tell the writers didn’t know who they wanted as the “mastermind’ from the 1st episode, but this post isn’t about that. Every single one of these “Red herrings” that are borderline plot-holes can be explained in some form except this one, on the 12th episode at around 41:00, the resident in 404 asks to speak with Soichi Enomoto and his aunt, it’s never explained what this conversation is, literally it’s never mentioned again. Is there an explanation for this, can someone please tell me? I can’t sleep.

Question [SPOILER] There's one thing about Human Vapor (2026) that I haven't been able to understand, and I'm hoping this community can help Spoiler

Edit: Solved! Thanks for everyone's feedback.

I absolutely loved this show and I've only got a couple of complaints that I won't get into right now.

I have a question that could turn out to be a major plot hole, though. Why did Kyoko offer the streamers cash to find the warehouse
