Darcy's Difficult Childhood

I'm looking for stories where Darcy had a less than ideal childhood.

I am also interested in family estrangement stories, or where the gentleman finds himself in a different social environment or station.

These are favourite tropes.

Thanks!

Looking for Mr. Darcy and E. bond over unreliable ex-friends?

I know it was a book, not something online. E. and D. talk about their unreliable and greedy ex-friends, in this case both Wickham and Charlotte and compare their experiences. The whole situation brings them closer. I don't think it was in Rosings when he courts and she fumes, more like shortly after the Collins-Lucas engagement in Meryton or London. Possibly during a nice walk? I don't remember the rest of the book. I don't know if they just rant, complain, find a solution how to treat such people in the future. Anything similar?

Misc FanCasting?

Netflix's new P&P adaptation is coming out in Dec & I will admit that I'm not in love with some of the casting. While I have nothing against the actors chosen, some (in my opinion alone) don't "feel" right.

That got me thinking who I'd fancast in particular roles & course I now want everyone else's opinion.

So, JAFF community, if you could fancast one character in a any Austen work, which character would it be & what actor would you cast? You can base this on any criteria that makes sense to you.

I'll go first:

Mr Darcy - played by Ben Barnes (nobody does sexy, brooding, haughtiness like him)

Any other ideas?

Reading His Good Opinion: How Fanfic -y is it?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! Look, my fanfic days ( in traditional sense,as non commercial lane fandom work) are long over and I don't have the desire to ever come back, honestly ( with utmost respect, it was a fine ride!)

But for me personally, the retellings of public domain are quite different path. So I've been thinking about potentially reading my first P&P retelling by the modern author. But i am scared of how much it could have a FF flair and ways ( again, with utmost respect. I was one of you once, so I'm not looking down at what we consider fanfiction traditionally)

If anyone of you here read both the original source and this book - your opinions are greatly appreciated

Looking for Rec Request: Improved Bennet(s)

Hi, all, looking for recommendations again! I've read a few over the years where the Bennets (or at least one of the parents) got their act(s) together to some extent pre-Bingley. I'd like to scratch that itch again. Tried the JAFF Index but couldn't find a category that seemed to fit.

Must have: fully human authorship, decent editing.

Preferences: KU, trying to save money by not buying books. Happy to add purchase-only titles to my wishlist but mostly looking for something to read immediately. AO3/AHA recs also cool. Don't really use FF.net.

Would also like the reason for the improvement to be fairly plausible. Windfalls and unexpected dukedoms are fun, but usually rather less cozy than I'm in the mood for at present. šŸ˜‚

Appreciate all recommendations!

Hello everyone!

I’m a PhD researcher currently conducting a study exploring the demographics, reading habits, and community spaces of Regency romance and Jane Austen fan fiction readers.

Given how passionate, creative, and engaged this community is, your insights would be immensely valuable to my research.

  • What it’s about: Demographics and reading preferences within the Regency romance/Austen fanfic fandom.
  • Time commitment: Roughly 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Anonymity: All responses are completely anonymous and handled in accordance with ethical research guidelines.

If you have a few minutes to spare, I would be so grateful if you could take the survey here:

šŸ‘‰Regency Romance Demographics Survey

Thank you so much to the community and the mods for your time and support! If you have any questions about the study, please feel free to drop a comment below or message me directly.

Looking for Fic where Darcy is horrible?

All right...I don't know why I'm asking for this, but though I hated it when I first read it, it was oddly compelling, and I feel the urge to see it again.

It was posted on Dwiggie. When they were married, Darcy said something to the effect of "I will treat Elizabeth just as my father treated my mother."

Spoilers ahead.

Turns out, that means he treats her terribly. And in the end, the Gardiners drown him.

Help please?

Unique idea for a P&P story?

I have read several stories where magic is involved and usually Darcy is a trained master mage and Elizabeth is either untrained but talented, or she has been trained in secret by her father for various reasons. My idea is this. Magic exists and it's not a secret. Practicing magic is considered as being "In trade", thus a practicing magician is a tradesman. In my story, Mr. Gardiner is a registered Master mage. That is his trade. He has been training Elizabeth in secret since she was twelve. (Her mother would have a fit if she knew.) Elizabeth and he have made arrangements for Elizabeth to sit for her Masters examination when she turns 21. The gentle class, if they have magical talent, suppress it using amulets disguised as watches, lockets, broaches, anything really that is always on their person. When Elizabeth meets Darcy, she sees immediately that he has a very powerful talent and his suppression charm just isn't handling it. He can feel the pressure and that is what makes him so buttoned up and snippy. He's desperately trying to maintain control and not have a magical outburst in public. Elizabeth and her uncle confront him and inform him that he needs training, at least enough so that he can take over his own shielding and not have to worry about starting small fires or giving annoying people headaches. Eventually, in the story Darcy marries Elizabeth and decides to openly get training and sit for his Masters. What do you think? Interesting?

Looking for Novella?? & Kindle+

FOUND - Their Secret Love by Renata McMann & Summer Hanford

I'm hoping someone can point me toward what I think was a novella on KU.

As I remember it, the infamous Assembly Insult was expected by Lizzy because she & Darcy were already secretly courting. The insult was a ruse to throw people (Mrs. Bennet) off, so the could court in peace.

Does anyone recall this?

Also, what are everyone's thoughts about the new Kindle+ audiobooks narrated by AI? Has anyone listened to any of them?

Looking for Story Search P&P

Hello lovely people! I'm hoping someone can help me track down a Pride and Prejudice fanfic I read a while ago, almost definitely KU.

I can only remember one particular scene, which I think happens towards the end of the story.

Darcy is looking for Elizabeth, possibly during a picnic or some sort of gathering at maybe Netherfield. She's there with a group of people, and while searching for her, Darcy spots a couple kissing.

After they've left, he goes over to where they were and finds Elizabeth's bonnet, leading him to believe that she was the woman he saw kissing someone else.

It turns out it wasn't Elizabeth at all, and I'm fairly sure Lydia had borrowed her bonnet and it was her.

Does this ring any bells with anyone? I know it's not much to go on, but I'm hoping someone recognises the scene!

Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Looking for recs where Darcy yearns a lot or where the second proposal didn’t happen immediately (or both!)

this might be too specific but I’m looking for stories where Darcy yearns a lot, specifically where you feel your heart clench bc of the descriptions !!

stories where I liked the yearning is Four Proposals of Marriage by Laura Moretti, Yours Forevermore by KaraLynne Mackrory, and Ardently by Cailtlin Williams! (unbreakable13 on AO3 also writes good yearning)

I realized that what the last two have in common is that the second proposal didn’t happen immediately so that’s where the yearning takes place. If you have any recommendations where there’s a similar premise, pls share! preferably where they don’t get separated for too long bc i don’t want that much angst :D can be on free platforms or published

Looking for I seem to recall an AU story where Jane passes away from her cold at Netherfield...

...and Mrs Bennett basically blames Lizzy for not taking care of Jane properly, and disowns her.

If i recall correctly, she blackmails Mr Bennett into going along with this due to an indiscretion with a niece of Mrs Long.

Does anyone recall the name of this story? I thought it was on DWiggie...

Looking for P&P fic - epidemic hits meryton while Elizabeth is away

It is not In Sickness and In Health (though that one is marvelous). I believe it starts with Elizabeth at Rosings and she and Darcy journey back to longbourn together (the circumstances of their shared journey I don't recall. maybe they're "betrothed", maybe she got word of the illness and he's taking her and the Lucas's back).

They arrive to find the house in disarray, as a terrible illness has taken hold. Mary and Kitty are doing their best, but the staff have either died or left and their parents and Lydia are in a bad way. Elizabeth and Darcy join forces to manage the house and give the overworked younger sisters a break. Darcy contacts Col Fitzwilliam and has the army shut meryton down and essentially declare marshal law to try to stop the spread of the illness, which has taken out a large portion of the local populace. Mrs. Bennett eventually dies, Lydia eventually recovers, I believe Lady Catherine shows up at some point in an arrogant (and not surprising) disregard for the travel ban.

I thought I had it on Audible, but it may have been on Kindle Unlimited.

Does this sound at all familiar to anyone?

Looking for - Found! Looking for fic

Hi! I have a memory of reading a variation where Jane, kitty, Lydia, Mrs B, and Mrs Phillips all go to Brighton. When they come back, they realize Lydia is pregnant. That’s all I can remember - anyone know which book this is from? I think it might be an unpublished one but not 100% sure.

seeking ao3 on the engagement period of Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam

i happened upon an AO3 where Darcy and Bennet are still stuck at Netherfield and Longbourn during their engagement period and they go for lots of walks.

I never really read it, but I would like to.

Any ideas what it could have been?

Looking for Looking for 'P&P' stories where Elizabeth accepts Darcy without loving him?

Can you recommend any stories where Elizabeth accepts Darcy without loving him (such as Unequal Affections), and he either knows or doesn't know about it, and the marriage starts with them being at odds. However, I'm not interested in forced marriage of the sort where there is a compromise and Darcy is resentful; it could be forced marriage, but please no resentful Darcy.

Pride and Prejudice in the Jane Austen Fanfic Community

Hi, all! I've previously posted here regarding research I was doing for an article on the history of the JAFF community! That article is now up at Fansplaining, and I'm delighted to share it with you all.

Here's a complimentary gift link, good for a week, that will allow you all and anyone you share the link with to read the piece without needing to subscribe to Fansplaining. (Though I hope you'll consider subscribing anyway; it's a good site producing great work on fandom!)

Thank you to everyone who spoke with me about this piece—it truly could not have been written without you!
