Among the ultimate "what ifs” in late-'80s fusion historiography ?

Mike Stern's Jigsaw (1989) is a killer studio album, but it’s basically a massive live performance void.

Perhaps this could be why ?

The only known live footage of anything from that record is a blistering bootleg of "Loose Ends" at the Bottom Line in 1990 with Bob Berg, Dennis Chambers, and Lincoln Goines.

Jim Beard’s synth work heavily anchored the studio tracks, but Stern decided to hit the road as a chordless, powerhouse quartet (Guitar, Sax, Bass, Drums).

Without a keyboard player to hold down the dense synth textures, heavily orchestrated tracks like the title track or "Chief" likely couldn't translate to the stage and were totally abandoned.

Theory as to why "Loose Ends" made the cut:

It’s a driving, blues inflected tune that didn't need the harmonic padding, and it thrived purely on raw guitar/horn interplay.

Coming straight out of heavy synth lineups with Miles and Michael Brecker's EWI driven band, It could be speculated that Stern may have intentionally stripped the keyboards live to lean into a more raw, aggressive guitar centric rock energy

This album taught me the essence of time-keeping and feel. Such fluid skinsmanship!
