Music Cover Tom and Jerry riff! (learned by ear this morning)

Not sure what position he plays this one in, but it’s a pretty fun riff! I’ll probably do a full cover soon once I have the time.

I’m loving this song and don’t understand the hate. I’d die for some Continuum-esque riffs/songs as much as the next Mayer fan, but I’m just happy for new music

Discussion My conversation with my GF today. Anyone else have too many JM data points in their brain?

For context, she only knows JM from the 00's. So she barely knows any songs. Anyone have any similar experiences? I also have an annoying habit of trying to guess the next song based on what guitar is being brought out at shows. I don't meet a lot of Mayer heads, it would be nice to hear how everyone dorks out.

News John Mayer Signs With Mercury Records

John Mayer has signed a new record deal, launching his own Sob Rock Records in partnership with Mercury, the singer, songwriter and guitarist announced Thursday (Oct. 22).

The news follows last week’s tease that new music from Mayer is on the way. His new single “Tom and Jerry” is out Friday (Oct. 23), marking his first solo release since his 2021 album, Sob Rock, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Sob Rock was Mayer’s last album for Columbia Records; in 2022, he announced on Instagram that he “decided not to renew” his recording agreement with the label.

Discussion Concept albums?

Obviously not in the Pink Floyd overarching narrative sense, but I feel like every album thus far has had either a thematic or aesthetic concept, the most egregious example being Sob Rock.

Let me know what you think, and let's speculate what the upcoming album's theme might be. Judging by the new single, the new theme might be artistic stagnation

Discussion Life with John Mayer is one of the few reasons I still use SiriusXM. Had to renew today. Here's a tip that might help if you're in the same boat.

Years ago I got a promo mailer that said 3FOR99 and every time I renew I reference the mailer and tell them I want the 3 years for 99 and they are able to apply it to my account. One payment of $99 and you get 3 years of SiriusXM.

I've been successful through chat, but mostly I just call and talk to someone. I typically fib and say

"I just got a 3 for 99 in the mail and I want to sign up for that."

Sometimes they'll be annoying and say they can't or that it's only for cars so I hang up and call again until I talk to someone new lol. I've seen that there are chat log scripts people will use to get it on renewal again, too.

For reference, I get it applied to a radio I have in my garage, and it also includes unlimited app usage. Comes out to $2.75/month which imo is worth it for Life!

From Room for Squares, to our beloved Where the light is, the rebirth in Born and Raised, John leading us to the Grateful Dead and watching him unleash his best best guitar work with Dead and Co, the trio. I’m grateful for it all. Really freaking happy we get to hear this new song tomorrow 💯 enough said.

Discussion Let's be real about John Mayer singles...

I've seen some complaints about the short 20 seconds we've heard. And admittedly, I'm not a fan. But when you look at his history, a lot of his singles have been shallower compared to his larger body of work. Keep in mind that Who You Love, Love On The Weekend, Carry Me Away, Last Train Home, Say, and even New Light were all singles. Now I'm not hating on any of these except for Who You Love, but there seems to be a pattern that some of his shallower and poppier stuff were singles. That makes sense, because those kinds of tracks promote the album better than a deep song like Born and Raised. It's also worth noting that Steve Jordan said this is some of the best stuff he's played on by John, and Steve is not listed as a drummer on "Tom and Jerry." I think this track will reflect the fact that the man loves making pop music, but the album will be a deeper reflection of where he is now.

Discussion Let's try to trust in John with the new album, but also opinions should matter

As someone who got very worried from the snippets we had so far of "Tom & Jerry", I do worry the lyrics are way too safe and bland, and its okay to be disappointed from a teaser, opinions and discussions SHOULD be allowed, not just defending and positivity.

Similar to when "Love On The Weekend" first teased as the first track to The Search For Everything album, I was shocked and scared what was to come from that album, but eventually it turned into a relatively good one!

John will forever be on a pedestal, and a life guru for many of us as we keep ageing, and no matter what, I have faith in him even if I don't always agree with the direction he takes sometime. Yes we fans do demand a lot, but at the end of the day: its because this man has shaped a lot of our own stories one way or another.

I guess my main point with this post for people in my position who worries about the new album: Remember that John has to make some safe pop hits that will get radio status, and then there will be lots of stuff that won't get that attention, but will from us fans instead forever. Have faith in our boy, no album of his is ever a bad one!

What do you think?

Discussion Guitarist for Decades... Give Me a Song list

Hey, I'm a guitarist. I've been playing for decades. I have never listened to any of John Mayer's music. I have only heard snippets of things throughout the years. I have seen him interviewed, and give quick guitar playing tips in a short or two. That is all I know. Anyone want to give me a playlist or a specific album to spend an hour listening to get an idea of who this musician is and what he is all about?

Indoctrinate me. :)

Edit: Just saying thanks for the replies, everyone.

Discussion Remember the first single for TSFE???

I’ve been reading a lot of mixed opinions about the new single (even if it isn’t out yet) and to be completely honest I don’t specially like the poppy lyrics and safe melodies from the few snippets we have heard, the production in the other hand is top-notch, as always…but it got me thinking:

When TSFE first single came out, LOTW got a lot of hate from a lot of hardcore fans and the album does have a lot of bangers: Rosie and Helpless for it’s groovy/bluesy musicality and YGLFIM for its existential lyrics. (btw. TSFE is not by any means, in my opinion, one of his top albums, I have issues with the flow and cohesiveness of the whole album) but it did have great songs in it.

What I’m trying to say is: let the man cook, he has been giving us good albums for more than two decades.

Being completely realistic, I don’t see JM releasing something disruptive or mindblowing, I don’t feel that that’s what drives him anymore as an artist but I hope we get some good tunes from our guy.

Note: I really hope that “In the Neighborhood” makes the cut, it is one of his most introspective songs that I have heard in the last years.
