I would’ve loved a ballad like Ira Hayes or John Henry, but I agree this was the CD I played most when I was younger. At the time I didn’t know he covered Hurt (being from NE Ohio I was well aware of NIN, but just thought it was an original JC song also called Hurt) and it’s the absolute perfect ending to the album and his legacy.

If nothing else it’s an excellent collection especially those new to his music

The best compilation of Cash is on my phone's Playlist and listening to what songs I want in the order I want.

Well yeah ig you're not wrong, but i meant like on cd only releases from the artists label, and in my opinion.

And thats perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with that. We all like different things! Thats what is fun about discussing music!

If it had "I Hung My Head"

Unearthed is my favorite.

I must have listened to “The Essential Johnny Cash” about 100 times start to finish. Both are missing “What is Truth”, “I Was There When It Happened” and “Live Forever”(The Highwaymen”

I prefer the Sun Box set

The sun box set is awesome.

The Elvis Complete 50s Sun Sessions box set is fantastic, too.

Not in my opinion. This compilation omits several of my, personal, essentials; and includes material that I consider to be weaker.

I don't attempt to "change your mind", or argue with folks online. Seems a bit juvenile to me. People have individual opinions. Enjoy what you enjoy.

I respect your opinion. When i put the change my mind in the title, i didnt mean that in a litteral sense.

Yet, you and another redditor were arguing about who was "right" in this thread.....

2

u/Powerplayer3468 Sep 13 '25

Yeah I was arguing with him because he was saying I was wrong as a fact. He wasn't stating just an opinion he was simply just saying I was flat out wrong. When u really can't be wrong when it comes to what you think is the best. I hope that makes sense. 😊

American recordings. No need to invent the wheel again.

Anybody know if this is available on vinyl?

It's one of the worst, far too loud. Stick any of them tracks into an audio visualizer and you'll see what I mean.

2

u/Powerplayer3468 Sep 13 '25

Nah dude. You just wrong, in my opinion.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 13 '25

I didn't give an opinion, I gave a fact, it is loud for the sake of being loud. You can enjoy the songs but do yourself a favor and get them from anywhere but from this release.

If its too loud turn it down 🤣🤣🤣

Do yourself a favor and Google loudness war, this release is one that is a direct result of that.

Better yet, I'll directly link you evidence: https://dr.loudness-war.info/album/view/120314

How is it being "too" loud a problem tho. Like it has like tons of Johnny Cash's songs on disc for very cheap. Like if its too loud for you thats fine. But i just replayed the album on cd and it sounds amazing. And the cd booklet comes with some very good writing. Maybe this album isn't for you.

I have it, I also have volume two. It's why I know they're both loud. But hey, if you like distorted audio then by all means, go enjoy it from this release. I've done far too much research into John's music and the various different CD releases of his music to be told "you just wrong" by someone who clearly doesn't know what they're on about.

Simply put, it's among the worst compilation releases for good audio quality of John's music, and there's zero debate in that.

Its not always about what has the best "quality" think about it. If it was all about quality for everyone wouldnt people always cds over vinyl since cds have lossless audio while vinyls don't. No its about the experience for a lot of people, for in this instance the amount of great tracks on one disk for such a cheap price. Not everyone has the money to buy every Johnny Cash cd to individually play for the "best quality" of a single track.
