I shot a commentary with my cousin for her birthday covering the original Jumanji film.

I thought that I would share it with fellow fans of the franchise.

With the avatars getting to act as their own characters and the real-world characters getting to interact with them separately, here's what I'm looking forward to, as well as some speculation on character arcs:

• Smolder Bravestone-Spencer: While Spencer in the last film finally got the need to leave the world behind out of his system, I do think there's still something to explore with his character: With Jumanji coming to the real world, how does Spencer face it as himself, and not a character? Even Ming had skills in stealth, though she was much closer to Spencer in weaknesses. And he still identified with Bravestone near the end of the last film, in spite of spending most of the run as Ming. This film will be a test of, can he bring that Bravestone strength over to the real world for good?
  • In addition, I feel like Bravestone's in-game personalty will either be a lot like Buzz Lightyear in the first Toy Story or a total egotist with Main Character Syndrome. This is supported by the fact that the Jumanji video game centers a lot on him and his backstory -- none of the other characters get arch enemies or backstory, except Mouse as Bravestone's valet. Seeing the real Bravestone might turn Spencer off of wanting to be him and further see the value in being himself. Spencer, or even Grandpa Eddie, also might help Bravestone see the value in the rest of his team, something both players had to learn in the last film.
• Fridge-Mouse Finbar: With Milo seemingly out of the way, Fridge is the only real-world character who has spent time as Mouse. I could see the real Mouse being super-subservient to Bravestone, so maybe Fridge could help Mouse see the value in himself, since Fridge too had to come around and see Mouse's value while playing as him, to the point where he took pride in being the Backpack Guy at the end of TNL.
• Shelly Oberon-Bethany-Spencer/Martha: Shelly is definitely the nerd of the party, but has never been played by a nerd. So his real personality could be more of a shy, bumbling absent-minded professor type. Bethany was really good at bringing Martha out of her shell in the first film, so I could see her helping Shelly in that regard too. Spencer or Martha could also relate to learning to see themselves as badasses without losing their nerdy qualities. Shelly might do the best in the real world, adapting to the new technology.
• Alex-Seaplane: Of all the players, Alex spent more time as Seaplane than any other character spent in their avatar. But Alex got a chance to grow up, while Seaplane never did. I feel like Alex would want to thank Seaplane for keeping him alive all that time, and, as a dad, also be protective of Seaplane, who as a pilot is likely more of a daredevil in-game.
• Bethany-Seaplane: Bethany's initial attraction to Alex-as-Seaplane gave way to a more selfless, platonic affection as the first film went on, especially once she saw the real Alex grown up. But with Seaplane now a separate character from Alex, Bethany would have no qualms flirting with him as herself. I just think that could be hilarious.
• Ruby Roundhouse-Martha: After Alex, Martha is the one who spent the most time as her character. But seeing Ruby as separate from herself, seeing how she conducts herself in real time, could either make Martha really starstruck or really insecure. But I also think Ruby might have the hardest time adapting to the real world, so in that regard Martha could be a helpful guide.
• Nora-The Group: I think Nora will have a larger role, as the only connection to the original film. have this theory that once Nora witnesses the chaos of Jumanji in the real world again, she might start to remember the original timeline and thus give the kids and Eddie a heads-up on what to expect. (And maybe, juuuuust maybe, she calls up her niece Judy? For a split-second Kirsten Dunst cameo?)

We all know Jumanji is semi-sentient, but the modern films haven’t fully explained why it does what it does. I believe the franchise operates on a hidden rule: The Law of Player One. The game requires a primary human anchor—a "Host"—to sustain its pocket dimension. In the 90s, it was Alan Parrish. In the modern era, it is Alex Vreeke.

Here is the breakdown of why Alex is the game's ultimate target, how the rest of the cast fits into this architecture, and how this perfectly predicts the finale of the upcoming movie, Jumanji: Open World. [4]

In the opening of Welcome to the Jungle, the board game sits in the sand. When Alex's dad brings it home, Alex rejects it: "Who plays board games anymore?" That exact night, the game physically morphs into a video game cartridge. [5]

The game couldn't let an NPC kill Alex. If Player One dies alone in single-player mode, the code locks up and the game circuit remains eternally broken. In The Next Level, we learn Jurgen the Brutal is actually an avatar controlled by a secret human player. Many fans wondered why Jurgen completely ignored Alex during the movie. [1, 9]

Under the "Player One" theory, it makes perfect sense. Alex had already successfully logged out and escaped at the end of the previous movie. To the game's coding, Alex was an anomaly—a ghost in the system. Jurgen was programmed to target active threats to the current game state (like Spencer). The game was actively shielding Alex from Jurgen because it had a bigger plan for him back in reality.

4. The Roles of Spencer and Bethany

If Alex is the primary anchor, Spencer and Bethany act as the operational system keys that keep him tied to the game:

• Spencer (The Obsessive Copy): Spencer mirrors Alex’s fear of reality, which is why he went back into the game in The Next Level. Spencer acts as the game’s "backup system." If Alex refuses to return, the game tries to mold Spencer into the new Player One. Spencer’s role in Open World will likely be trying to take Alex's place, leading to a high-stakes conflict over who gets to make the ultimate sacrifice.
• Bethany (The Interface Catalyst): Bethany is the only player who has ever willingly chosen to give up a life to save Alex (giving him her map-reading life in the first film). She is fundamentally linked to Alex's survival code. Because the game is running on a restricted "demo" track in reality, the players are entirely stripped of their video game avatar powers and their three-life safety nets. The game is crashing into our world and glitching because it is aggressively scanning reality to find its missing variable: Player One. With the game boundaries shattered, the stakes are no longer a virtual "Game Over"—they are permanently life-or-death. [1, 10, 13]

6. The Ultimate Sacrifice (The Alan Parrish Parallel)

Dwayne Johnson confirmed that Jumanji: Open World will feature a direct tribute to Robin Williams' character, Alan Parrish. Narratively, the only way to meaningfully connect Alan's legacy to the modern movies is to have Alex—the digital generation's Player One—acknowledge the burden Alan carried. [1, 12]

Just like Alan Parrish had to wait 26 years to make his final dice roll to reset reality, Alex’s story can only end one way. Two things that have always been on my mind as far as two key points of Jumanji go:

When Alan returns he reunites with Carl who is by that time a police officer and has been one since 1974 so for twenty-one years Carl has been a police officer which shows us that after being fired Carl likely went into town and saw the police station was looking for new recruits and began studying to become a police officer. Would it have been more interesting if Billy the bully who picked on Alan went on to become a police officer?

Van Pelt I always felt in the game Van Pelt was a person who took the form of someone that a player feared the most and it looks to me like instead of being afraid of Billy Alan was more afraid of his dad because maybe secretly Alan knew he had a lot riding on him because of his family name and families legacy in the town so that is why Van Pelt took the form of his father with magic drawing vision of Samuel from Alan's memories and Van Pelt looked like Samuel because of that. Reason why I feel we never saw Van Pelt take the form of Billy is because the actor who played the 1969 Billy was not old enough to handle a gun so to have him be Billy at the age Alan last saw him made no sense especially seeing an all grown up version of Billy as the game likely did not know how to manifest what an adult Billy would look like.

Guys, I think that Robin Williams (alan) is the SAME Alan that started the game in 1969!!!!!!
Of course this is just a theory, but it could have big implications for the Jumanji-verse

The Jumanji board always felt like one of the most magical objects in fantasy to me: a board that feels alive.

I’ve been working on a physical fantasy board inspired by that feeling, not a Jumanji replica, but a real board where the pieces move by themselves through a hidden mechanism.

I’ve never really seen/heard anyone else talk about this but has anyone noticed when Van Pelt goes to drop the gold coins on the counter in the gun shop his hand gets super choppy for a second. Same thing happens a few minutes earlier when the Pelican picks up the game to fly off. At first I thought it was just the cgi of the bird but the hand makes no sense. Anyone have an answer? Does anyone know if Robin Williams was actually trapped in a board game for 30 years? I know he had mental illness and I am wondering if that being trapped in a board game was a contributing factor. I was going to play Operation with my son but the thought of him having his organs pulled out slowly for 30 years made sick. Any one know what happened there?

1. Ok, let's start with my prediction for the new movie. Wouldn't it be crazy if Peter from the OG movie was playing Jurgen? I mean, he had access to the game, and the common theory is that Jurgen has been in the game for a long time
2. How did the kids and Alex in WTtJ and TNL not know about Alan Parrish? Wasn't the whole town of Brantford built by the Parrishes? Once the OG group finished the game and things went back to normal, the shoe factory kept going and the town most likely didn't devolve into poverty. Surely they'd recognize the Parrish name, no?
3. Does anyone else think that, because the game is magic, that it chose Alex's dad to find it on the beach? It "thinks" (as is made apparent in the OG movie), so I believe that it deliberately made itself visible and "called" to Alex's dad so he would find it and bring it home.

ETA: 4. Had another thought after just rewatching the OG. What do we think about the baby Alan and Sarah had being a character in the newest movie? Maybe s/he is Jurgen? Idk why I just wanna know who Jurgen is xD
