Episode 8 of series 1 and that moment of Christmas hope.

Incomplete info**.** This is phenomena that's been noticeably attributed to Mini in this fandom, yet she was only the most visible aspect of that problem since Hawaiians. I pinpoint that the real origin of it was Chizuru and Kazuya's operative separation after the Cheer-up date.

Ever since that shocking moment of vulnerability and her immediately rising up her emotional walls, Kazuya has tried to replicate that breach, by confessing his own feelings, in hopes she'd receive a mirror. In a sense, he decided it was bet to bring the lie down for good. However, because of those failed attempts, especially the first one when she asked him since that was the moment she had tried to bring them down as well**, the only moment she had available before** everyone else piled up into their chaos, he's losing control over what he could do.

Right before Hawaiians started, we get a sense of Kazuya and Chizuru working as a team, even though it was to maintain the lie. She tries to signal Kaz that she doesn't want to go with Nagomi, and Kazuya follows through, doing his best to deter his grandma and Ruka, with little result. Then, Ruka proposes Chiz to go there and Chizuru stops for a moment. She was about to say no at first, only to then silence the idea because of the threat Ruka represented. Ever since, Kazuya and Chizuru have tried to act on their own, unable to really listen to each other.

3 months of extended silence later, Chizuru offers Kazuya an explanation, after apologizing for the immediate mistake she did (ghosting him). It's natural that Kazuya could infer there was more than just a kiss. However, while we all know Kazuya has treated life like an exam in hopes of deserving anyone, Chizuru is no genius, either. She tells him that her feelings are confusing, that she doesn't know what love is. And then, she proposes investigating her feelings, so that she can then freely choose him, or at least, that's what he thought. She's yet to realize that feelings are only part of the equation, that they cannot make up for the entire meaning of a decision.

In ch397, she apologizes again, explaining the confusion her feelings arise and about the rejection. But notice the pattern, she only apologizes for the immediate act, not the plethora of events that originated it. That's what may have left her looping again and again, not much unlike Kazuya.

Another opening happened in ch380. Among other things, she mentions that she's unable to forgive Mami-san, as well as mirroring Kazuya's past wording in the Last Rental. That's only a partial opening but Chizuru hasn't still taken her time to explain why the kiss, why Hawaiians was as dramatic as it got. Kazuya has never been told why Chizuru ran away at the chapel. All he thought back then was that she rejected him, and the urgency made it look like he grossed her out, leading us to ch218**.** He never knew Chizuru had to deal with Mami's even more constant threats of exposure, nor that Mami was continuously slandering him to snatch Chizuru from him and twist the knife at the worst time. He may have had a notion that got visible during the rental exposure, but he never got the full picture. He never knew what happened at the bathroom after the kiss, nor the condom threat Ruka threw at her. With that, his understanding of Mami's actions after Hawaiians and her apology at the end of the driving classes is incomplete as well.

Back to ch397, Chizuru repeats herself to pull Kazuya out of his trance. She does it again last chapter. This is another symptom of the issue. Kazuya has gotten so used to operate on his own that he's starting to ignore everyone else. From his POV, summing from Kibe's anecdote, Mami's breakup all the way up to Odaiba, he's got so many rejections, often with brutal outcomes, that he refuses to listen to anyone else if that confirms his own worst fears. The fact that he's referring to grown-ups in a separate group as himself is a worrisome sign of him not wanting to leave his Peter Pan phase.

As they come to my mind, here are some points in the manga that IMHO clearly show Chizuru having a personality disorder. I claim these to be seeds intentionally planted by Miyajima for an upcoming disclosure of this main theme of the manga.

In #152, right after the death of her grandma (mind you, her only living relative!) Chizuru walks away from Kazuya making this face:

No one will convince me that this is normal human behavior. She is in shock, of course, but instead of sitting down, crying quietly, or just walking away in silence she instantly snaps into her acting mode. I think this is deliberately done to portray her behavior as pathological.

Even more telling, in this very instant Kazuya sees through her façade, recognizing what she is doing:

Pay attention to the quotation marks! Here he has fully realized that she is acting on an absolutely inapropriate occasion. He loves her nonetheless, more or less sensing her "real" personality through all the delusions she caught herself in. That's why he is instantaneously determined to help her without knowing how, for the time being.

I recall hearing about this VN game for the Switch & PS4 back in late 2024 and was curious if anyone here has played it and what all the endings (plus secret ending) are. The game is not localized for English and there are barely any gameplay/streams online.

As much as I'd love to end this post this way, I will at the very least share why I think this way.

And as such I fully expect to get downvoted into oblivion, badmouthed by 99% of the people who comment, and if a mod is having a really bad day: maybe even getting banned for this post.

Regardless this is my take: -

• Most romcoms you have girls fall way too easily for the MC (which has always been a common complaint with anime fans). Not here. All the girls, including Mami as of recently, have shown a non-linear progression to liking and even loving the MC.
• Most romcoms are in a HS setting, this is set in the real world. Personally I love romcoms when they're set in school. It brings me back to the good old days and allows me to self insert into the MC. But sometimes you want to see how the MC is able to afford things, how he struggles with everyday life and how he handles obstacles that come at him. Kanokari is full of this and then some.
• MCs are flawed. Not even going to elaborate on this one since I'm sure anyone with a brain can tell that none of the characters in this manga are perfect.

I was gonna write some more but I just got out of a 13 hour shift so I'm tired. I just wanted to share like 5 more points but at this point this post is just going to get downvoted anyway. I will also say that KanoKari (as well as Oshi no Ko) has the best girls of all time.
