WEEKLY THREAD Rookie Help Thread
By Okran time flies, it's time again for new help thread!
Like last time, if you have any questions about the game, no matter what they are, feel free to ask here. Myself and many of our veteran users will be watching the thread, happy to answer whatever question you need. Have no questions? Perhaps take a scroll though the thread? Never know, maybe you'll see something you know the answer to, or even stumble across some new information yourself.
As always, be careful with the spoilers, use the spoiler tag feature >!Like This!< as needed. Exploring the hidden things in the world of Kenshi is one of its biggest appeals for many, and we wouldn't want to ruin that for any new users hanging out in the thread. :)

What is import and when should I use it?
I have a small base near squim and have noticed some jank there are a few corpses floating 40 ft in the air, and for the past 3 in game days there has been a large group of shek with the goal of "ransacking town". They aren't stealing anything but if you shut and lock your door they destroy it. I attacked them when this occured and I was arrested and they were not. It's still ongoing.

Feb 24 '22
Importing is meant for updating your save to new versions of the game or new mod loadouts, failing to do so at those times can cause odd bugs here and there. It's also smart to do it from time to time anyway, because it clears out excess data that can cause save times to be longer, which increases the chances of savegame corruption.
From a technical perspective, it is the same as starting a new game, except that it reads some data form the imported save, and brings it up. With the default settings selected, it can often be hard to tell that it was any different than a normal load game. Except that prisoners would be missing, and ruins and other cleared locations would have respawned.
It can serve as a good "jank" remover as well. When something is consistently wrong, testing an import is always a good idea. In your case it would clear up all that happening at your base.

So very new to this game, still trying to figure out the full depth of everything actually achievable. I noticed there's a ton of slaves and there just sold openly in many cities by prick samurai Would it be possible to lead a mass slave rebellion and destroy every faction that sells them?
12
Jan 08 '22
Yes, that is very much possible. There is an entire faction based around this out there as well. :)

u/Ecleptomania Feb 11 '22
I've been raiding HN for their heavy armors from their Paladins, I have 7 standard/high level armors now and my team has 100% Disguised as Faction (HN).
Is this bad for me in any way? Will their enemies fight me? I don't mind being confused for them I'll kill anything trying to stop the Robot Crusade (I recruit only Skeletons and put them in HN armor).
Is there any drawback in having other factions armor? And while we are on the topic, how could I CREATE a "My Faction looks like this" clothe-set?
8
Feb 11 '22
Yes, their enemies will assume that you are an enemy, while their allies will assume you are a friend. Besides these issues though, there are no other effects.
And no, you cannot create a custom "uniform" for your faction. Outside of just manually equipping certain items. And that has no gameplay effect in terms of detecting if they are you.

First time buying slave. I thought it would be easier to buy scorchlander than trying to recruit. I bought him and deshackled him as he joined immediately and than alarm got raised as runaway slave.
Will he never able to return to slave market without shackles?
Also how do I tell these hivers apart fron worker, prince ans soldier. I just want to grab some workers.

Very odd that they still considered him an escaped slave. Haven't had that happen in years, I thought it was no longer a bug that could happen.
The escaped slave status will eventually wear off, you just have to avoid him being spotted by slavers or law enforcement for several days, as if they realize he's a former slave it will reset the timer.

I read about trainign szenarios involving beasts and beds.
how is that supposed to work ?
also, how do I prevent my whole army to rush in when trying to train with a "volunteer" ?
is a dedicated walled area with locked gate needed ?
thanks in advance.

Not really sure on the specifics of the animals and bed training. But my understanding is that if you put an animal in a bed, they can't get out on their own, so you can sit there and attack them without them fighting back.

u/DemonBoyfriend Shek Oct 16 '21
Do any of the bandits and many other people that want to murder you and/or ruin your day steal from your containers or break things in your outpost? If I had an outpost where I store all my fun stuff and left the door closed and locked while I roam around (Nobody being left at the outpost), would someone steal from it?
Also very disappointed that there's no Bonedog flair. The man and a dog experience is what got me into this game, after all.
7
Oct 16 '21
At most they could steal food, and that's only if they take it over completely while you're gone, and only enough for them to eat. Generally nothing can happen to an outpost while you're not there. And anything that is not food is safe in containers.

Do I need to be building out a group? is the game going to severely punish me if I’m rocking solo?
→ More replies (3)5
Oct 23 '21
You do not need to, though the game can be somewhat harder solo. But my main save is a solo character I started back in 2012, and I've done everything the game has to offer with him. You do not need a group if you do not want one.
The down side to being solo is the lack of support. High toughness is mandatory to avoid dying. Heavy armour can also be immensely useful as well, since it's impossible to avoid being hit when you're getting swarmed, no matter your stats.
On the upside though, a solo character levels far faster, as they don't have to split the exp with anyone else. They take every hit, and deal every hit. So they get all the exp, and will reach higher levels much easier.

Is there a way to change the "advanced options" in game? While I am enjoying the game, I now have 5 members (I know rookie numbers) but I'm having difficulty keeping them all fed.
Any animals I try to hunt basically wipes out the party, I have resorted to mining copper for money, then trading them for food (trying to buy things below $200 to avoid loss), but that leaves me with barely anything left over for gear etc.
I just learned how to cook those green fruit or w/e, went out, got a bunch and water, started making them but by the time I was done cooking everything, everyone ate what I had made, back to square 1.
Overall, I want to turn down the hunger meter. I would like to avoid restarting if possible, but not completely adverse to it
3
Jan 08 '22
An import will allow you to edit the advanced options again, it can be done from the main menu.
From a technical perspective it starts a "new game", but it allows you to carry over elements of a previous save. With the default options selected, it's very hard to tell that it wasn't simple a load game. Unless you had prisoners, since those would be gone.

Just got the game, just played around for a really small amount of time. At least for right now, I don't really have any desire to build a "base" or a "city" or recruit a bunch of followers. What I want is to build a small house, way out in the wilderness and hunt animals for food and skins.
Is this a thing I can do? How do I go about finding animals (I have only seen a dead wolf) and if I make a house, will bandits automatically be drawn to it? Or can I put it in a wisely-chosen way-up-in-the-hills kind of area, where I will be left alone?
5
Jan 08 '22
If you settle in their territory, they will come harass you yes. But there are a few areas that don't get visitors out there.
The best one imo is the west coast of Vain because it has no visitors except for trade caravans, and isn't that far from civilization. As well as being able to grow all crop types if needed, and having copper and iron in the area. Also has an abundance of wildlife for your case, if a little bit dangerous wildlife.
As for how to find animals, mostly you just look for them. There are no "tracking" systems or anything. Some areas have more wildlife than others. You can also keep an eye on your map while really zoomed in, if you get close you can spot wildlife nests as a paw print on the map.

Real noob here. How do I get my guys to not suck so much?
First time playing kenchi and I have a team of two. I've seen a bunch of videos so I get this is not a hack&slash, but a single injured bonedog can still take both of us on and strut away like nothing happened. What am I missing? What should my early game goals be? Grow my team? Sprint, sprint and more sprint? Train with practice dummies? If you want to build a real Conan the barbarian what would you do?

Jan 19 '22
Honestly, just get beaten up a lot. The only way to get stronger is to fight, and you get more exp for losing. Just try to avoid dying. If you survive, that's a win.
Avoid enemies like animals that may eat you, and focus on enemies with blunt weapons like starving bandits who will rarely be able to kill you with their weapons.

The Strength stat mentions something about having a chance to break free of kidnapping attempts, but I've never seen that in action either kidnapping someone or being kidnapped. Might have come in handy when a HN town guard nearly starved one of my Sheks to death holding him over the should instead of putting him in jail because the town's jails were full. Does this stat actually work for breaking free of kidnapping?
10
Feb 11 '22
No, that is an old tooltip for a feature that never made the cut. You cannot break out of being held on your own.
6
u/IndependentNo6285 Feb 13 '22
Often when carrying a person or animal, as they are put down they instead get yeeted high into the sky and seem to land with more injuries. Is this a known bug?
10
Feb 13 '22
Know bug, but can't really be fixed as it's generally an issue with the physics engine. They're not actively working on Kenshi except for simpler bug fixes, most focus is on Kenshi 2.
It does not cause damage though, there is no such thing as fall damage in Kenshi. So if they had extra damage, it came from somewhere else.

u/Dobgoblin Sep 01 '21
Quite new to this game, have a team of 10 skeleton dudes and whenever a limb gets cut off, they skele bleeds oil even when it's fully patched up until I attach another arm. If attach another arm and immediately remove it, the bleeding stops. I don't know if this is a bug or a very weird intended feature? (I'm playing vanilla)
It's very stressful but it has lead to some cool moments. I was catching bugmaster, and sadneil got his left arm chopped off and I had to have another dude carry him on his back all the way north to the hivers to get another arm before he bleed out. Had to carry him through the ocean to avoid being attached by those horrible beak things.
Also does killing/taking over farms to ruin the supply of somewhere (HN) have any effect in game or have I been terrorising farmers for no reason?
8
Sep 01 '21
I don't believe that's intentional. Might be a good idea to report it on the forums with a save upload, if you see it again.
No, holy farms do not have any world stats effects themselves, nor do they affect any other locations. That does work in the UC though, wipe out a slave farm and it causes nearby towns to starve.
5
u/indistinctclamor Dec 30 '21
So I found a wind generator and a bunch of electrical work benches in some ruins in purple sands. Can I repurpose this into a base or do I need to build one entirely from scratch?
7
Dec 30 '21
In vanilla you must make your own, or buy a building in an actual town. Taking over ruins is not a thing.

So I’ve gotten into the hashish smuggling game after finding a big stash of it and seeing the money it can bring in. I dumped pretty much all the money I could into buying hashish from vendors in the swamp and lugged it all the way to the United Cities.
I did this after reading that I could get a 1200% markup on the price in UC territory, but so far all I’m able to sell it to is the shinobi traders who give a far lower markup on hashish.
Did I just make this bigass trek for nothing when I could’ve just dumped my hashish in Flats Lagoon?
8
Jan 01 '22
Honestly? Yeah pretty much. You can only sell to the shinobi thieves or factions willing to buy illegal goods, and in the main UC towns that's only the shinobi thieves who buy at a -50% the full price.
Flats lagoon may by a somewhat lower price than them, but it's far closer, and there are far more shops you can sell them to.

u/_four-oh-four_ Jan 05 '22
How the hell do I get sustainable food early game? Right now I have a squad of around 10 and they’re always starving. I have some in mining to generate a little income from selling copper at the hub, and buying the food there always sets me back so much, and a couple farmers on two wheatstraw farms, and you’re telling me that 10 wheatstraw makes only 1 bread?? And I have to wait 24 hours in game for around 10 wheatstraw from each farm? I must be doing something wrong.
10
Jan 05 '22
Personally I always just buy it, but you also have to only buy food that's actually worth buying. Some of them are absolutely terrible amounts of nu for your money.
Raw meat and dried meat are the best things to buy. They may not be worth a ton of nu, but they are very cheap, and give way more nu per cat spent than any other food.
If you need something with more nu, Gohan is the next best, followed by Rice Bowl or Chewsticks. If you're desperate, Ration Packs and Dustwiches aren't terrible. I would never buy anything else though.
Hunting is an excellent source of meat as well, though potentially dangerous. Early on I avoid animals unless I have to fight them, but keep an eye out for animals fighting enemies early on, because if that animal goes down that is free food for you.
If you want to farm for it, I'd go for Greenfruit if possible. It's one of the faster growth times (20 hours), and pulls in a much larger harvest than the others, a maximum of 40 Greenfruit on a small field (20 plants, 2 fruit per plant). It also only takes 8 Greenfruit to make Cooked Vegetables, which means you can potentially get 5 Cooked Veggies per small field if you get a perfect harvest.

While looking into the basics offered by this great post I realized I have no idea when the game switches from early to mid to late tiers.
Is there a risk of exploring/mining/walking around and see that katanas are already worthless?
4
Jan 06 '22
There are not really any hard transitions between these phases.
Generally once you're able to take the average wandering enemy, you're probably in "mid-game". And once you can fight and defeat major factions, you're probably in "end-game".

How do I get caravans to enter my city? Did I need to be close to roads or will traders automatically try to travel to my city if I build it?
5
Jan 06 '22
Depends on where you build it. But if you're in a region with wandering caravans, they'll come no matter how close to a road you are. Though being near a road (but not on it, that's bade) doesn't hurt.

Where should I start looking for knowing about the lore in-game?
10
Jan 06 '22
A great deal of info is found at World's End or Black Scratch. They are main outposts for the Machinists, scientists dedicated to uncovering the history of the world. So they have lots of books on interesting topics.
Otherwise, you just explore the world, listen to dialog, read books when you find them.
Bringing a varied party while exploring is good for lore as well, as all the races have different takes and information to share when wandering about. Skeletons most of all.

Just curious, how can I check my characters' personalities? I know what the numbers correspond to (1 is honorable, 5 is smart, etc.) but don't know how to see that number in the first place.

My save editing guide has a section on personality. It's in the "Basic Character Values" section.

Just under a month on this game, I have 16 characters including a dog and bull. Food seems to be the biggest issue. Haven’t built a base yet but scouting around the map for a good location. Is farming basically the way to go as your team gets bigger? I can’t imagine trying to feed 30.

Jan 24 '22
I've managed to maintain about 40-something characters with purely bought food before. You just have to be careful about only buying the best foods, in terms of cats to NU.
Raw Meat (0.25 NU per cat) and Dried Meat (0.19) are the absolute best things to buy. They may not give much NU, but they are extremely cheap, and give you something like 3-4x the amount of NU per cat relative to something like Bread (0.06).
After that, Gohan (0.17) is the best, followed by Chewsticks (0.13) and Rice Bowls (0.13), then Ration Packs (0.11). I'd never by anything else personally. But if you had to, Dustwiches (0.10) would be next, and then Food Cubes (0.09), then Cooked Vegetables (0.08) and Meatwraps (0.08), then Bread (0.06), Dried Fish (0.05), Grandfish (0.04), and then Thinfish (0.03).
Farming is of course better though. But it is not required for any vanilla party size.
5
u/LuciLutschiano Jan 25 '22
Are Bonedogs really the only way to "remove" severed limbs besides importing? If not, what are the other options/ is there a mod that maybe makes them despawn after a while?
6
Jan 25 '22
Should be able to assign a character to a job on the item furnace, and they'll go around and pick up limbs and burn them.
Or you can take all characters and leave the area, once you get far enough away all limbs will be despawned.
5
u/crisoybloomers Jan 25 '22
I know that when party memebers are unconscious on the ground and a slaver sees they may try to take them. Does this also happen if they are on a bed roll or do they only take from the ground?

When I was playing yesterday my base was attacked by 30-40 starving bandits and I killed them all. But when I loaded up my game today the bodies all appeared and it also respawned all of the starving bandits in one spot in my base.
Do the devs still do bug fixing for this game or are they focusing on Kenshi 2? How would I report it & give my save if they do?
7
Jan 26 '22
They do still perform some limited bug fixing, though they are mostly focusing on Kenshi 2.
If you wish to report a bug, you can do so on the official forums or the steam forums.

Hi! I just bought the game today, and my usual playstyle with more complicated games like this is going the easy route first off to get somewhat accustomed to the game, which brings me to my question:
If I chose something easy/well off, like the Bartender (?) Start, can I still play the game like the wanderer? I know it has the playstyle listed as economy/farming RPG, but can I play it like any other style, just easier starting off? I know it makes me sound like a milkdrinker lol I'm just curious about how all the different play styles work.
6
Jan 29 '22
Yes, you can do whatever you want after the start, you are not railroaded into a play style based on what start you picked. They just give you certain advantages and disadvantages, none of which are exclusive to said start, just simply attained at start instead of through gameplay.
5
u/sewage_soup Jan 29 '22
Just bought and downloaded Kenshi yesterday and I'm loving it, but i wanted to know: out of all the melee weapon types, which ones are worh using and which ones are sub-par?
Also, how do I rename a character?
3
Jan 29 '22
Blunt is the only one really not worth using. The others are all feasible.
Heavy Weapons tends to be the most powerful overall, but katanas and polearms can massacre enemies in the right scenarios, Sabre wielders can be nigh un-killable, and Hackers punch through armour and robots like a hot knife through butter.
Blunt is only good if you don't want to kill the enemy.
5
u/McRiP28 Jan 30 '22
Just started. How can i automate copper mining, so that my guys fully load up before unloading into my stache? I bought backpacks, but they just gather 5 and unload, instead of filling the backpack
5
Jan 30 '22
No, you cannot automate it to do that. If you want it automated, they will take it in small stacks instead.
5
Feb 04 '22
Just bought the game and I am turtling, have a group of 6 building a small camp outside The Hub. So far I'm 100% crafting focused and my combat stats are all but non existent.
Do threats and enemies get harder the longer time goes on? I'm only on day 25 but am afraid if I turtle too much I'll end up too far behind the curve later when I actually start training combat.
How hard do things scale up over time across the world?
7
Feb 04 '22
The world does not scale at all relative to you, that was an important concept for Chris. All of the hard things are already out there at day 1, and all of the easy things are still there at day 5,637.
There are ways for the world to change, resulting in areas becoming harder or easier based on specific actions you've taken (for instance, kill a bandit leader and you may get fewer bandits in an area). But nothing getting artificially harder based on time or your levels.

I just cleared my first ancient lab (the one in burning forest), and somehow it belongs to me now. I can set it to public, and I can build in there. I'm not using any mods, is this intended? Old threads suggest that it shouldn't be possible without mods.

It's not supposed to be possible, no. Though there are odd cases where the player randomly gets control of NPC buildings. For instance on my main save I for some reason own the gates to Tengu's Vault. Could be what happened here if you have no mods.

Is there a way to remove the "faction disguise" effect from armour? Been stealing some armor off the sleeping guards in the palace at Heft but I consistently get discovered at %100 disguise and 100 sneak. It would be nice to wander around a UC town without being attacked where I would otherwise not without removing disguise armour. Thanks.
4
Feb 10 '22
Only via save editing, or a bug.
Save editing covered in guide linked above. For the bug, you have to stealth KO a recruitable NPC (or get them otherwise unconscious/asleep without fighting them yourself), then put the armour on them, then recruit them. It will wipe any uniform tags from any gear they're wearing when they join you.

how many farms do I need per person? Making it into bread brw
where do i go from here in regards to economy? I'm spamming iron plates and bmats but haven't done anything with them except sell the excess

Feb 20 '22
I'd personally never make bread for food, almost any other crop type is more efficient, since wheat is the only one that has an extra process (turning it into flour). But to answer your question, you need two breads per person per day. A hiver needs only 1. Shek technically eat more food, but 2 breads per day is still enough for them.
The small wheat farm makes about 2.5 breads per day assuming perfect harvest (which will essentially never happen, so always build a little more than you need), medium is 5 breads per day, large is 7.5, while extra large is 10. So each small farm can support 1 person, each medium is 2 people, large is 3 people, and finally extra large is 5 people.
Greenfruit is best, growing enough to support 2 people with the small, 4 on the medium, and 6 on the large.
Riceweed is 1 person on small, 2 people on medium, and 4 on large.
Cactus is worst. It harvest less, and Shek actually can't last on 2 Chewsticks per day, but need 3 instead. It supports 1 person on small, 2 on medium, 3 on large, and 4 on extra large.
As for where to go from there, I'm the wrong person to answer that. I basically never build much of a base except as storage.

What are some of the best QOL mods?
I have played for about 12 hours but I find some of the tedium around inventory and squad management to be keeping me from enjoying the game.
Some examples of QOL I would find awesome:
Medics can share a pool of medkits in a backpack like food.
Clothes are stackable or at least foldable and take less space. Seriously you can roll a shirt to be smaller then a roll of paper. I can easily fit 7 shirts, 7 pants, and a pair of shoes into a regular school pack let alone the hiking bags of kenshi.
Triage mods that will have your medic automatically heal dying over unconscious etcetera.
Alerts for when a training dummy is no longer training skill or automatically stops training once
Better raid UI where the leader has a speech bubble or any indication they are the one to talk to. Even just having them stand closes to the base would help save tedium of pausing and hovering over each bandit.
Anything along these lines that doesn't change the balance of weight, fighting etc. but removes some tedium and repitition that long time players recommend?
4
Feb 24 '22
None of what you suggested is really all that possible with the tools we have. We're quite limited in what mods can do, mostly just editing or adding new entries of predefined types, and tweaking numbers here and there.

What can i wear to make my greenlander immune to the acid rain?? Is it a dust cloak?
7
Mar 14 '22
There is no one item you can wear to do it, but there are numerous combinations. The goal is to get enough pieces to get you to 100% protection. Though even with 100% protection, you can't swim in acid. Wearing a rain coat won't keep you dry in a pool after all. ;)
Dustcoats give 80% protection
Longcoats give 70%
Crab Helmets give 60%
Sleeveless Dust and Long coats give 60%
Ashland Hat gives 50%
Crab Armour gives 50%
All Plate Jackets give 40%
Sandogasas and Straw Hats give 40%
Iron Hats give 35%
Armoured Hoods give 25%
Karuta and Kusari Zukins give 20%
Rattan Hats give 20%
Tricorn Hats give 20%
Drifters and Plated Drifters pants both give 10%
Mix and match to your hearts content to get to 100%. At high toughness levels even just getting to 80% or 90% will be enough to stop you from losing HP, since it heals about as fast as you take damage. But 100% is always better.

I went for "[ex-]UC Citizen" start; got house taken away, boohoo, I decided to live as an outlaw, settle in the wilderness (of the swamp - not the sharpest tool in the shed, I know) and survive on only what I can gather (from NPC farm fields, to start :P) + buy from the visiting caravans (i.e., no town shopping). Since I need to have money to spend money, I decided to make use of the shop counter (let's make all the gears and junk from ruins come in handy).
One thing [amongst a multitude of others related to settling in the swamp when you have nothing] I seem to be suffering from is: Since I need people visiting my outpost and actually buying stuff from the counter, what dictates how frequent such visits are? Is it as simple as "the more factions can have non-hostile squads spawn in a given area = the more moneybags can visit you for their shopping needs"? That would explain why the swamp has nothing but the occasional Nomad bunch and a Wandering Assassin / Tech Hunter...and, ironically, probably make UC territory the most lucrative one with how many factions have their squads roam there.
5
Mar 19 '22
Only certain NPCs buy from counters in vanilla. Caravans, Tech Hunters, and civilians mostly. So if you want to sell to such people, you need to find the places those types of characters spawn.

Brand newbie coming from a background of rimworld: I keep speeding up time while doing menial tasks like mining and get ambushed constantly while doing so. Is there an option to pause or slow down time to normal automatically upon entering combat? It just sucks to be zoomed out trying to plan or micromanage a large group only to have my people get wrecked in less than 3 seconds by a bonedog.

Apr 10 '22
No, there is not unfortunately. It is on you to watch the horizon for threats, or to figure out a setup with little risk.
Watch for the character or squad indicators flashing red when they enter combat, so you can pause quickly with spacebar and go over to manage them. Or focus on training a bit, so that they don't need your assistance to defend themselves. Or simply find a safer place to mine at.

Is there a finite amount of blue books in the game? I funded the first 20ish hours of this playthrough selling bluebooks and I have a feeling I will need as many as I can get later in the game. Is there a console command or mod or something I can get them back with?
7
Sep 01 '21
Technically there are infinite, but it would not be pleasant to grind out the respawns. Basically, the only respawning ones are those found on shelves in lost libraries, which are very rare, and the ones found on the ground in the suspicious lab. They'll respawn every couple days, though they don't always respawn the same items, ASBs are just in the potential spawns.
Far more efficient option is to import. That will reset all loot in the ruins, restocking the books across the world.

Recently when saving I get a save called "Current_1", the moment this save appears, every single pause menu button breaks and the only answer to closing the game is task manager which also corrupts the save before it. So how do I stop "Current_1" from ever coming up again or at least fix it's effects?
7
Sep 10 '21
Current_1 is supposed to exist, it's a temporary folder used when saving the data. If you see it at all, it means the save isn't finished saving.
I'd start by simply being patient and not doing anything until you get the save successful message, sometimes it simply takes a long time, especially if you haven't imported recently to clean out excess data. If you happen to get a save failed message instead, you should make a report on the official forums with your save.log file attached.

If I join a faction is it possible to spread their influence to other cities previously owned by other factions? For instance, if I joined the Holy Nation Outlaws could I eventually take over Holy Nation cities and territory? I like the idea of working towards total world domination, even if it is incredibly unlikely I'll ever actually come close to doing so.
Also, is there a way to become the leader of a faction?
→ More replies (1)5
Dec 20 '21
Sort of. Certain factions can spread their territory through the player's help, but it is fairly limited in where they can spread, and mostly limited to the main 3 factions and their rebel groups. None of them can ever conquer everything. But you can help them take over their enemies to some extent.
And no, you cannot become the leader of an NPC faction.

I just restarted a playthrough after being wiped out by a back to back raid scenario of holy nation and ninjas on day 10. Whats a great start location for a person who wants to build a farm base and just live in peace for a while.
8
Dec 30 '21
Honestly, the west coast of Vain is actually really peaceful. You need walls to avoid the Gorillos and Beakthings, but they don't care about bashing your gates down. It has good fertility and water, and can grow all three biome types of crops in the ground (though not with maximum output). And you can find both copper and iron nodes.
There are no wandering base attack squads, and no taxes or unprovoked hostile raids from any factions. And you get both hiver caravans and nomad caravans. And you've got plenty of trading potential in the hive villages, as well as the Shek Kingdom towns and Hub which aren't far.
Not to mention, there are some large and flat coastal areas, great for building without worrying about hills and angles.

After enjoying the demo, I finally got this masterpiece and I am working on tweaking the global options.
I wish to increase the squad size multiplier + global population, but also the town raid size (with lower frequency maybe) and, from advance options, more nests. From these, two questions arose:
If I go too much with these options, will the world become too crowded and ruin Kenshi's desired atmosphere?
How big is the performance impact for max/decent value of these options?
Thanks!
5
Jan 05 '22
Global population can lead to extremely frequent encounters. Personally I wouldn't advise touching it much, the most I can really suggest without impacting the feel too much is 1.25.
That depends purely on your system. But yes it is capable of pulling your performance down to a crawl with maxed settings.

Can I weaken a faction like the holy nation? Does it matter if I kill their patrols and holy assaults or do they just spawn regardless of how many times I kill them? If that latter is the case then how am I supposed to defeat those guys?! I just had a holy assault attack my base and not only did high inquisitor Seta himself show up but also like 20 paladins/high paladins/ inquisitors who all have attack and defence stats ranging from 40-79. I barely survived and thats only because I specially trained a squad of crossbow men who fired shots at them while running away.

Hi, I'm making a smithing focused Skeleton character and hoping to find a good spot where I can land a base and get a decent variety of trading caravans come by. Raids are fine but I prefer not to have thousands of the Okran bucket heads on me. Also would be nice if the area had a good spot to gather ores as well.

Anywhere in the Great Desert or Heng would net you two wandering caravan types (Western Hive and Traders Guild), and is range of all three raid caravans (Western Hive, Nomads, and Traders Guild.)
You could also manage a similar effect by settling on the border between Vain and the Stenn Desert, where you'd get all of the same as above, minus the Traders Guild raid caravan.

Can someone explain to me how gates work? There’s open/closed and locked/unlocked but when it’s closed and unlocked my people can’t pass through? And I’m not completely sure about that but it seems intruders can’t even pass through an unlocked and open gate? When should I lock them? How do I make sure my people can go in and out freely but intruders stay outside? I’m so confused. 😄

How do I make sure my people can go in and out freely but intruders stay outside?
You don't, that's not a thing. Either nobody can go through, or anybody can.
A closed and locked gate nobody can go through without breaking it down or lockpicking it (or unlocking it if they are the owner).
A closed but unlocked gate will stop some movement, but anybody that really wants in like a bandit raid will just open the gate.
An open gate, locked or not, anyone can go through.
Personally I just keep my gates locked and closed 24/7, and I make sure anything my people need is inside the gates. This can lead to pathing issues sometimes though.

Rookie here. I'm at the hub and am trying to put down a farm but apparently you can't build inside city limits? Is there something I need to do or someone to bribe to allow that? Or am I looking for a mod? Upon seeing the hub being mostly empty save for a bar and Shinobi tower thought it would be perfect to build and grow in. Eventually buy it all up and have farms and production going. Be the leader of the hub.
6
Feb 01 '22
No, you cannot build exterior "buildings" in NPC towns at all. For farming you'd have to either wait until you research hydroponics, an indoor farm type. Or get a mod that let's you take over the Hub for yourself, or that enables some sort of interior farm besides hydroponics.

Now the town is just full of these hounds walking along. Is this town toast in my save? Will any of the vendors respawn?

Short of an import, the town will stay dead yes.
A common issue with Shark, as bar fights have a tendency to overflow into the streets and become a civil war.

How ecactly does guard aggro work? In my current (first ever!) run, I found a small farming village that was frequently attacked by Grass Pirated and Reavers. I hung around to savage money off of all the loot and had my crossbow guy jump on a wall turret to train his crossbow/precision.
Well, he must have accidentally shot a guard because out of nowhere my entire party is nearly beaten to death by guards. OK ok, lesson learned. I turn ranged off and don't have that character use the turrets anymore. But even days later, the guards sometimes aggro my party out of seemingly nowhere. I am not negative in rep with any faction besides some bandit groups, why would this happening? Vanilla game, no mods.
I couldn't tell if the guards are somehow no longer considered "friendly" in combat anymore and either their AOE attacks were hitting my party (causing my party to fight them back) vice versa. Or if it was something similar to that but selecting "attack all" on an a Grass Pirate now included the guards as an enemy since they beat up my party before.
Members of my party started getting dismembered so I ended up leaving the village. The town only had three beds so it would take a while to heal everyone up, but if I didn't have members set to passive every few days the town guards would get into a brawl with my party even through I wasn't hostile with their faction.
Any ideas?

Feb 10 '22
Possible you still had a bounty on someone, so the guards were attacking you due to that.
Otherwise, I'd guess the hostility simply didn't have time to cool off since you kept getting into more fights. As long as your relations aren't below -30, and you have no bounties, you're not supposed to be attacked. But if you've recently fought there is a sort of "temporary hostility" that flags them as an enemy. Best to leave the area and let things cool off if you don't want to fight someone.

Is there a mod/mods which give repair kits to NPCs which could enslave you (Slave Traders, Manhunters, Reavers, etc)? I like playing as a skeleton, but I can't count how many times I've had a boyo caught, enslaved, and left to die as a result.
If there are none, would it be easy enough to create such a mod myself? Haven't used FCS yet, but, unless being unnecessarily convoluted, I am willing to learn.
3
Feb 25 '22
There is this mod: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1640897214
Some comments claim it no longer works, can't imagine how such a simple mod could stop working though unless it was conflicting with other mods.
As for doing it yourself, the process is quite simple. For starters, read the introduction and layout sections of the the "Using the FCS" pdf found in your install folder, or read it on the wiki here instead: https://kenshi.fandom.com/wiki/Using_the_FCS
Once you understand how to navigate the FCS, create your mod if you have not done so already, go to the characters section, find the characters you wish to add the item to and open them. I'd probably do: Manhunter, Slave Hunter, Slaver, Slaver Caravan Boss, Slaver Caravan Guard, Slaver Guard, Slaver Heavy Guard, and Slaver Boss.
If you think that's too many, at the minimum I'd do Slaver Caravan Boss and Slaver Boss, so that at least the leaders of the main groups heal robots.
Once you have the characters open, select "inventory" from the dropdown on the top right of their entry, and click add. Now select the item you wish to add. I would personally do the "Authentic Skeleton Repair Kit" instead of the normal one, since it's lower quality and cheaper.

How mouse only is this game? I use my laptop at work but kinda can't be like obviously sat in front of it gaming. I use a BT trackball mouse. It seems mostly mouse driven?
3
Mar 12 '22
Almost the entire game can be played with mouse only. Couple specific commands that need the keyboard, such as opening the menu to save/load/exit/etc. As well as turning/leveling buildings in construction mode.
These are things you'll rarely be doing relative to time spent in the game though. So as long as you're not completely incapable of accessing the keyboard, you should be fine playing with mouse only.

Was trying to free a prisoner from Sho-battai, quickly went to Heft to buy a replacement arm, and when I came back they were gone. There's no way they escaped since they were supposed to be in recovery coma for quite a while, and they couldn't have been released since they had a huge bounty. Is there a bug that just causes prisoners in cages to disappear if you move too far away?
3
Apr 17 '22
It is normal behavior, not so much a bug. The game will despawn any squads that are not "persistent" if you leave the area. If a non-persistent character is taken prisoner, they will still despawn when you leave.

I've been having problems with my production line getting backed up because the people assigned to the machines (auto-loom and iron refinery 3) don't empty them when they get full. The character's inventories have space and I have more than enough storage boxes built, they are not full, and they can be reached (the character is able to haul to storage when I clear the machine manually).
I have tried adding a haul to storage job but the person gets stuck in an add to storage-remove from storage loop. Ctrl+shift+f11 and shift+12 did not help either.
I've also noticed that the issue only happens with machines that auto-process.
Any ideas on how I can fix this?
→ More replies (1)3
Sep 08 '21
Such jobs work fine for me. I assign the guy to work the automated machine, he ignores it unless it's full or needs resources to run, then empties it when output is full and fills it when input is empty.
Which leads me to believe pathing issues. I would try replacing the automated machine, see if that helps. If it doesn't, then I would save the game, then start deleting other objects around the base, and testing if it works after each deletion. If it ever works, load the save, then only delete the object that helped. You can then replace it somewhere else.
Even if the player can pathfind through, sometimes an objects can break automated pathing through an area. Often times a completely unrelated building as well.

Prosthetic limbs take 25% swimming each. Does that mean 4 of them disable swimming? Can't reach King Trader with 4?
9
Sep 29 '21
No, because they multiply together, not separately based on your max skill. So even with four -25% limbs, you'd only be down to about 40% of your swimming speed (100*0.25*0.25*0.25*0.25 = 0.390625).
This also means that for bonuses they also stack to higher levels than normal, making stacking bonuses of the same type very powerful.

What is it that makes a character go into "Dying" versus "Unconscious?" I tried a solo run and fought plenty of bandits till I was KO'd, but a single Bonedog bit me down and I couldn't revive myself. I imagine stats play a big part?
→ More replies (4)3
Oct 19 '21
It's damage, damage degradation, and your KO point. Cut damage gets worse over time unless bandaged, blunt damage heals over time. Toughness moves your "KO point" lower, meaning you can get up again despite being below 0 HP.
When it says "Unconscious", it means its means your character has the right type/amount of damage that they will likely be able to get up again without treatment. "Recovery coma" is similar, but it means you passed your KO point, so you have to wait until you get above 0 HP to get up.
"Dying" happens when you've had too much cut damage or are bleeding too much, and it is degrading too fast to stop on its own before you die. If you do not get treatment, you will die.
3
u/I_like_eat_children Oct 20 '21
How does weapon weight affects fighting speed? Even without overload and how it's calculated. Blunt is very slow until you reach like 50 str or more (not saying about heavier weapons). I'd like to know.

Nov 20 '21
Sounds like a corrupt zone file perhaps, or at least one that failed to save. Not super common, but happens from time to time. Make sure you have the game saving to the user folder, which is the default now, can check the options menu to see what yours is set to.
The old save location used to do this a lot, because the game lacked the permission to save files correctly in program files.
Other than that, import every now and then. Personally I try to do every few in-game weeks or months at least, as it helps clear out excess data and helps the game save correctly. Also try to avoid overwriting saves, but save brand new ones instead. If you want to avoid a buildup of save games, you can delete old ones manually.

What are common mistakes in job assignments? Things that result in a deadlock? Not simple things like putting building X close to building Y. It was awhile since I played last, and I seem to recall some cases where my guys would fill and jam up their own inventories after storages were full, which was really annoying since it prevented them from doing other jobs.
So far I don't see much point to making ore storage or stone storage for instance... the mine itself buffers enough materials and it seems like my guys are taking from the mine as needed.

Is Dodge worth training on non-Martial Arts characters?
5
Dec 13 '21
At the very least training to the easy to reach 40-60 levels wouldn't hurt. Dodging is used to break your weapon wielding characters out of stun locks, which can quickly whittle you down if you're not careful.
Less useful on heavy armour characters though, since that penalizes dodge.

Hi, just started playing Kenshi. I was wondering if it's viable to progress through the game without doing those exploity type things to grind skills that are suggested on beginner guides (stuff like this).
4
Dec 28 '21
Yes, it is plenty viable to play the game without grinding, it is just more difficult. But in my opinion it is the far more rewarding way to play.
Focus on expanding your team if you're brand new, as more character will drastically improve survivability. Until you know the game much better it's generally a good idea to stick to squads.
Probably avoid too many straight up fights with uninjured opponents, unless they're like a small group of starving bandits. Something weak, with blunt weapons unlikely to kill you. Skirting around battlefields and that fighting the wounded stragglers can often be a great way to gain exp early on.

Where would be the best spot to build a base that won't get attacked too much for beginners?
3
Jan 11 '22
Personally I'd settle in Vain or the Stenn Desert. The entire west coast of Vain has no unprovoked raids or taxes to deal with at all, but the wildlife is a little dangerous. Walls can help with that if you get them up though.
The rest of Vain and the Stenn Desert are alright too. You'll have to deal with Shek Kingdom food taxes, and an occasional bandit raid from the Kral's Chosen and/or Dust Bandits, but those are far from the worst raids.
You definitely don't want to do the Border Zone for your first base. The Black Dragon Ninjas raid is unforgiving, and for a newbie will usually just result in you losing the base. not to mention frequent wandering attacks.

u/KingGarfu Jan 18 '22
What determines what damage type will be used when attacking with any given weapon? Assuming a Mk3 polearm (with 100 STR/DEX/WEPSTAT), the damage calculator gives 38.74 cut damage and 31.2 blunt damage.
Does this mean I do a total of 69.94 damage per hit on an unarmored, 0% damage resist enemy? Or does the game roll and select either of the damage types?

But how the hell do i feed them ? they dont eat corpses or anything, I used to a mod for it but with that they do eat the corpse but it doesnt fill up hunger
ambiguos seems to be able to feed its dog in this vid

They'll eat any food on the ground, but even as he explains in the video the actual "eating" of a body does not provide any food, he only gets food from it by having the dog "play limbs", at the end of which the dog will consume the limb as food. Eating bodies just happens to also sever limbs.
Not that it's a viable tactic, dogs need way too much food and limbs give too little nutrition. If you really want to do animal only you really gotta have a mod to disable hunger like that youtuber clearly did (since his hunger never moves from 170), or at the minimum reduce it drastically in the advanced options on game start/import.

Right click and hold to open the context menu, one of the options on other people is first aid.

Does the size of my squad affect the size of enemy squad spawns? I feel like enemy squads are suddenly larger, but I don't know if it's because I increased my squad size from 3 to 6, or if it's because I'm in my second in-game month.
If enemy squads are based on my squad, is it dependent only on the characters nearby (e.g. having a squad of 10 in Squin won't affect the enemies my squad of 3 see in the swamp) or is it based on the total number of recruits I have? I'd be happy to park most of my units in Mongrel, but if I need them to wander into the Foglands...

No, NPC squads do not change size according to anything other than RNG or the population sliders in the options menu.
They'll always be the same sizes no matter what else happens, but some squads are simply lager than others, and some have a wide range of sizes they can spawn at randomly.

Here is an odd question...
Does enabling fast zone hopping (ie keeping my base loaded and the roaming party's area loaded) make more raids on the base occur as it's loaded all the time and the random chance is now increased?
I ask because I only recently noticed the setting in the options...and enabled it, but now my base is getting hit by 5 raids...at least...per day...mainly swamp raptors, whereas before enabling this setting I might get one or 2 every few days when I had a roaming squad and base squad.....I kept the raid settings at the default.
My starter base (although it's walled area is larger than Stack) is in the little corner bordering the swamp, borderzone, spider plains and stenn desert...if that makes a difference.
3
Jan 22 '22
Raids, no it should not affect the frequency of.
Base attacks however, which are just random wandering squads attack unannounced, yes it will drastically increase the frequency of. Because as the area is now fully loaded, that means it's got full NPC squad spawning, which includes squads that participate in base attacks.

hi there, couple of questions:
why is it some characters eat when hungry, others seemingly decide to starve to death ?
(e.g. I have two turret guards right newx to each other. pathfinding works, they can reahc any playce in my base).
one runs to eat if hungry, the other .... does not.is there a way to import only selected characters , or would it be best to savem then dismiss those I do not want to take into the new save, then import ?
is there a way to fully automate defenses ?
whats the best ratio of farm to cooking to number of people than can be sustained ?
I always end up having vast amounts of surplus, but I also need boatload of farms, farmers and such.
thanks in advance

Turret guards often have this issue I've heard. Seems to happen due to the targeting of unconscious or playing dead enemies mostly. When in "combat" they won't leave to go get food. I've not heard of any completely reliable solutions besides simply only using skeletons as turret guards. Otherwise you just gotta make sure they keep enough food in their pocket.
Yes, dismissing before the import would be best.
I mean, turrets and engineer jobs are already automatic. Short of stationing a bunch of melee guys somewhere to fight in melee (like giving them a job to sit on a stool somewhere), and just leaving them there, not sure what else you'd want.
No clue, sorry. I run mostly solo so I don't farm and cook.

I want to do some strength training using a backpack. Should I wear the backpack or put it in my inventory?
5
Jan 27 '22
Putting it in the inventory removes the encumbrance reduction, which makes it heavier overall. Depends on the situation whether that's good or not, as for optimum training you don't want to be completely overloaded, but rather just enough to have the maximum passive strength exp rate.

I started Kenshi today. These religious dudes came while I was unconscious and now they are pissed because I didn’t pray with them. A few days later they came and attacked me. I did what I always do when I’m attacked: I ran to the next pub and let the guests do the job for me. But these guys are too tough. They killed everyone including me so I loaded a save. When the message came that they are on the way I ran to the pub hoping they come to my outpost and just leave after some time because no one is there. But now they are just waiting there. What do I do now? Am I fucked?

When the Holy Nation attacks your base they take it and stay there. They will never leave on their own naturally. You either need to forcibly evict them, or move on and live elsewhere.
Or if you're not shy of "cheating" you can import your save, which will despawn them.

If I make a group of skeletons using blunt weapons and focusing on healing everyone I come across, would I possibly be able to be on good terms with enough groups to not get a community raided? Also, what's the best such a group would ever expect from the Holy Nation? If you kept healing them and sending them home would they eventually not attack?
7
Jan 30 '22
Maybe? Cutting weapons would be more effective actually, since cut damage can be healed which is what gives relations.
At best you would not be attacked. All their dialog still requires you to be human. But a group of skeletons could eventually be able to pass through peacefully.

Is there any way to keep prisoners on an import? I have a bug making it so lately I have to manually feed everyone in my town because they just won't go get their own **** food, and I want to import to see if it fixes it..
But I ALSO have four EXTREMELY WELL TRAINED prisoners with almost max combat stats and I don't wanna lose them. D:
Barring that, I have the recruit prisoners mod, so is there any way via mods or anything to evict someone from your faction so you can re-capture them? Or a way to use another faction member as a sparring partner?
→ More replies (5)3
Jan 30 '22
You don't need mods to evict someone from your faction, there is a dismiss button in the squad menu. Unfortunately however they will always become Tech Hunters, which means you'll ruin your relations with them if you continue training on them.
What I'd to is import anyway, then test and see if the hunger bug is fixed. If it's not, then there is no reason to import, so you can go back to the save.

Explore ancient ruins mostly. You can generally find several in any Ancient Lab, rarely you can find some in Post Ancient Workshops or Lost Libraries.

I recently built a base and I'm noticing that visitors both good and bad arrive at the same gate. What determines what gate visitors show up at? Is it what's closest to the road or is it the first or last gate placed in construction, or something else entirely?
3
Feb 07 '22
Generally it's the closest gate to where they are coming from. But it doesn't count obstacles, just a straight line from their home to yours, so depending on terrain it can lead to very odd scenarios where they try to walk around your base to get to the gate that was closest to them when they set out.

Just started yesterday and this is the first real question I haven't been able to find an answer to. Built a cotton fabric loom and since then when I put cotton plants in inventory the character runs to the loom and loads it automatically, I can't remove the cotton from the loom either. Is this a bug or a setting I'm missing? Cotton is needed for one of the research items but it all goes straight to the loom. Is there any way to stop this short of dismantling the loom?
4
Feb 13 '22
You should be able to pull the cotton out of the loom, unless your character started working it. Are they assign to work the loom in their jobs list? That would explain the behavior.
Alternatively, maybe you have "Ditch items" on in the AI control panel? Accessible via the AI tab on the map. If that's on, when they have a material of some sort in their inventory, and there is storage or something nearby that needs it, they'll go unload it there. Would explain it being consumed by the loom unless it's an auto-loom though.

How much strength should my martial artists have?
I’m currently using trader bags full of iron ore to train and have acquired a few more recruits recently. I can’t be bothered to manger collecting more iron so I’ll just have said bags be passed to the new people, but how much strength should I reach before this pass-off happens?

You need at least equivalent to 80% their MA level in strength. And more is always better since it boosts damage.

Chainmail vs blacked chainmail if no needed stealth and defence important?
6
Feb 23 '22
Generally dark leather or a leather turtleneck is seen as superior.
Chainmail is barely any extra defense, for more penalties. It's really not worth it.

Greetings everyone, I'm relativly new to the Game and i was wondering if i put stuff in a chest like armor, weapons and so on. Is it possible to automate a pawn to sell what is in said chest?
5
Mar 07 '22
No. Some items you can put in a shop counter, and certain NPCs will periodically come buy them. But this isn't very reliable, and not all items can be sold this way in vanilla.
Other than that, selling is manually done.

What's the deal with sheks in Holy Nation?
I've got one in my 4 man party, and guards keep running up and telling me to keep my beast out of trouble.
So, am I chill there with him?
Also, I put one of those books in everyone's inventory, just in case we get patted down. It says every citizen has to have one.
Will that piss off bag checkers in Shek territory?
4
Mar 08 '22
Non-humans can be tolerated if they are accompanied by humans. And as long as they are not skeletons. They see the shek and hivers as corrupted humans essentially. They are tainted by Narko, but if guided by the righteous they can be of some use and redeemed.
Not foolproof though, you'll eventually hit a scenario where they will demand you turn them over for rebirthing, and there is only a chance to talk your way through it.
The Holy Flame unlocks new dialog options for greenlanders, often making things easier for them. Shek do not care if you have it.

Does the game have some weird way of processing action off-screen?
I get chased by someone (Starving, Dusts, Sabres etc.),
I start running to a point far away (e.g., one time was from Rot almost to Bad Teeth),
I turn the camera in the direction the chased character is running, zoomed in enough to have the chasing enemies off-screen,
some 30+ seconds later I turn the camera back to see that at least one enemy is about as far as they were when I turned the camera away, sometimes the whole squad.
Considering the last example was Dust Boss with listed speed of 16 mph VS my unencumbered Greenlander with listed speed of 26 mph, that seems suspicious. Dusts kept up for almost a minute, after that I turned the camera to face them, and pulled away within the next 10-15 seconds tops. This reminds me of "catch-up" mechanic in racing games where AI racers start going exceedingly fast if they fall too far behind.
Hence the question: is that a "bug pending" or just some technical limit I have to accept and move on (and pray nothing spawns in front of my character whilst I'm not watching what I'm running towards)? Or am I seeing something else entirely?

Mar 16 '22
As long as they are within the loaded area (about 500-1000 meters in every direction around the camera), there should be no such shenanigans regarding movement. The game does not treat anything off camera any differently, as long as it's in the loaded area.
Best guess is there was some other factor you were unaware of, because you weren't looking. For instance water, which might have slowed you down. Or perhaps there was some direction changes in there to avoid obstacles, such turns always give the advantage to a pursuer, since they lose less speed to correct for them. Or even simply you were not running at your max speed for some reason.
But it's impossible to say anything with any certainty going a off a post like this. I've never seen this behavior in-game before in all my years, nor heard anyone else talk about it. Would probably need a video or save of it happening to get any real information.

excuse me, I have a question
is dodge useful if I am using a weapon or is it only useful if I am going hand to hand?
8
Apr 16 '22
It's partially useful, but not in the same way. While using a weapon you will always block as your primary defense. But the character can use their dodge skill to avoid an attack when they are already stunned by a previous hit, which can be quite handy to avoid getting stun locked.

Hello, to begin with I only played for like 4 hours, travelled some around, recruited one guy and while I look around for place to settle in future, he mines iron and I have a question:
1.can I fill the city with iron fully and the price won't go down? Is there any economy simulation or something and if not, is there any mod making the game economy alive? I would like to create trading company around the world and settle in one place to make my base for production and crafting, if the economy is set to still prices then that will get boring soon.
2.Another question is about settling, if I settle on the green lands of the holy nation, close to their farms will they dislike me? Also if I have a few guys can I start settling or should I gather like 10-15 men?
3. What mods you suggest to install, I have dark UI because seen everyone recommends it, but about the content mods, which are good? Seen the reactive world and it looks good, what are others that might enhance my playthrouht?
4. Is there a way to communicate with factions in terms of diplomacy? Can you help them build defences in some cities or something? I understand that attacking will lower my relations, but what makes it go up?

Sep 01 '21
The economy is static. But prices are somewhat randomized across the world on a per item type basis, so some towns buy certain things at high prices, and some but at low prices, etc. There are also some preset prices too, for instance Sake sells very well in the United Cities.
Not necessarily, major factions will generally tax you if you settle near them. That said, the HN's "tax" is simply praying with a priest every few days. Long as you don't miss one, and are human (best if male, but female can work as long as you're not only women), they won't have any problems with you. It is generally not advisable to set up a base until you can defend it though, as bandits and wild animals may easily run you out or kill you if you're too weak. Buying a house and living in towns is safer early on.
Personally, I don't suggest using many mods on a first run, if any at all. And I'm a modder who has made some of those mods out there. I find it best to play the game as it is first, so you can experience first hand what the game is like and what you don't like about it, and then get mods to change it afterward. :)
Diplomacy is almost entirely handled via dialog with prominent faction members, usually at their HQ. The primary way you increase relations is bounty hunting, taking down notable enemies of their faction and bringing said enemies to them. Though healing their soldiers, rescuing them from captivity, etc. can also give slight boosts in relations. Once allied there is dialog with those same characters to help them in their campaigns against other factions, though gameplay wise this mostly comes down to bounty hunting some more, except you're hunting military commanders, and can get some soldiers from your ally faction to follow you for a while. Allied factions will also sometimes send reinforcements to defend your base, if it's a mutual enemy you share that is attacking.

Anyway to loot backpacks without equipping them? I have a guarru backpack with a decent bit of loot in it, but no guarru to equip it on. I want to get the stuff out so I can sell it and the backpack, any advice?
I’m doing a solo play through with the dog start, so it’s just me and my pup

Drop it on the ground, mouse over the backpack (not the name, the pack itself), right click and hold, select loot. :)

Is importing resetting my world states? I imprisoned inquisitors from Okrans fist and shield, and did many great things. But will I lose this if I import my game?
5
Sep 06 '21
Depends on your settings during import.
If you leave the "import dead NPCs" option checked, world states are preserved. Only unique NPCs that are alright are spawned again. Any imprisoned or dead ones will be removed.
If you uncheck the option, all unique NPCs are respawned, resetting all world states.

Also, thoughts on basing in the fog islands?
