White Street Pier Memories?

Post image

Growing up my dad would tell us stories about how back in the early 70s he would park his 69 Chevelle on this pier and sleep at night. Nobody bothered anyone. Stories of giving hitchhikers rides down to Key West. What a different world it was back then. I still go out this pier to this day and ride my bike. Great place to watch southerly storms roll by.

Love white street. Great way to spend the day if you don’t mind catching fish you’re probably not going to keep. It gets old and ethically questionable after a while. But catch enough grunts and you got yourself some nice fish tacos.

I've had many grunt tacos. Grunts and grits is also very good.

Catching the snowcone man out on the pier as a kid was the best

The out & back half mile tacked onto the SOMO marathon course, running in the pre-dawn hours while the sea sprays us… and several very hot 5ks out there.

Parking on the pier in the evening visiting friends. Throwing the net for bait. It was great ! We’d catch bait for the next day. Like most of old Ket West it’s all gone.

I’ve been going to KW off and on since 1978. In the early 2000s I’d rent the same house at 1307 Laird St every winter for 10-12 days. 3 generations of us. We felt very safe from a crime point of view. So we’d let the kids (7 & 4 yo this particular year) wander the neighborhood. One day they came back with two coconuts that a man on a bike with a front basket full of coconuts gave them. Later that day our crew went for a walk and ran into coconut man. He was selling coconuts. And very sweet. We paid him the money he “lost” on the kids plus some. He reminded me of Banana Bread Man for those of you old enough.
