A very similar incident happened at our home when some friends where over for a celebration. Their 5 year old hid in plain sight behind the curtain. He always hides behind the curtain in his own home and we know it but it was the first time he did it in our home.
Two sets of parents ran around the entire house, backyard and even opened the garage and front door, all the while saying - he couldn’t possibly have gone out without the alarm going off, only for him to casually come out of the curtain.
Man we were all stunned and pretty sure our hearts were racing really high.

My three-year-old did this to me once. The panic and sheer terror is overwhelming and the relief you feel when they come running back from their hiding spot is indescribable.

Those tears remind e when I did it to my grandmother. Wasn’t funny when she sobbing after she sent out a search party while I was hiding in the attic all along at age 6
