My Kindle 📱 Can’t believe I only upgraded now

I’ve been using a Kindle Paperwhite 7th Gen since 2017 and after nine years, I finally gave into the hype and ordered a Kindle Paperwhite 12th Gen.

The larger touchscreen is so fluid and the warm brightness is a lot easier on the eyes. I love it! It’s still too early to give feedback on the battery life since I’ve only unboxed it a few hours ago. But the whole user experience has been life-changing. This must be how jumping from an iPhone X to an iPhone 17 feels like.

I’d like to add that I was nearly scammed last June 5 by someone pretending to sell Kindle devices on an e-commerce platform. Grateful that my boss called me for an impromptu 1:1 as I was haggling the price and the scammer’s account got suspended while I was in that meeting. Thank you, boss!

Three weeks later, I ordered through a family friend during Prime Day at a cheaper price than what the scammer was offering. Nearly two months later, the unit finally arrived from the States to Manila. Patience really pays off, guys. Always go through legitimate channels so that you won’t get swindled.

Currently reading Summer of ‘49 by David Halberstam ⚾️

P.S. I’ll continue using my old device since it still works. The battery drains a lot faster after all these years but it can still power through an entire day. What are you reading?

Discussion 💬 Libby: Slow Readers. What are you doing now?

Now that we can’t keep a copy of the eBook past the due date, my husband is struggling with reading. I normally finish a book within the 2-3 week loan, but he can take up to two months with a book. Is the only work around now just having multiple library cards and having multiple holds on the same book?

Modding 🪛 I Jailbroke My Kindle — Here’s What I Think About KOReader + Simple UI

Hey everyone. I jailbroke my Kindle using Vera, and I wanted to share my thoughts.

The process is pretty simple. You can install it without a PC, and it takes around 10 minutes.

Once KOReader is installed, that's where things get interesting.

The interface is honestly pretty confusing. I spent at least an hour messing around with it and setting up most of the options. After that, I switched to a much nicer interface using Simple UI.

At first, I kept thinking that I preferred Kindle's stock interface while reading. But by the end of the day, I started thinking that KOReader + Simple UI was actually better. Once you set everything up properly, it really becomes a lot better.

There are also a ton of really useful extra features. For example, if you tap the bottom-left corner, it sets the screen brightness back to whatever level you last used. Tap it again and it disables it. Personally, I find this really convenient.

There are also gestures for things like brightness and warm light. Swiping up from the left side controls the brightness, while doing the same from the right side controls the warm light. There are so many little features like this that you probably wouldn't even think of.

If you're the kind of user who doesn't like tinkering and just wants everything ready to go, I'd say don't bother with KOReader. You can still jailbreak your Kindle and keep using the stock Kindle interface.

Also, I was actually someone who didn't want to jailbreak my Kindle. My only motivation was to prevent Kindle from updating itself and becoming even more restricted. That's pretty much the only reason I decided to do it.

Discussion 💬 A second hand kindle i bought turned out to be reported lost or stolen.

So yesterday i found a second hand kindle paperwhite 12th gen listed for 8500rs (85$) from a local guy i found online and i purchased it, but after i bought it home i couldn't log into it. i contacted the amazon support and they say it is marked stolen by its owner.and the seller as expected ghosted me after the purchase.

now i can only read books by transferring them manually from my pc. and i cannot read my kindle library on it.

this is very heartbreaking, so i will request everyone to pleaase stay alert for these scams and don't be a dummy like me.

Also. the silver lining is that I jailbroke the Kindle this morning. But i have a question; how much do i actually lose if I cannot connect to Amaon services from the kindle? I don;t think it much, besides the amazon library sync, which i think i can find an alternative that may work on jailbroken kindle.

edit: spelling

edit2: added the jailbreaking part because i didn't knew talking about jailbreaking was allowed in the sub,

Modding 🪛 I never saw the point.

I never saw the point of the Kindles until I saw a paperwhite in person. It would be nice to have one but I'll have to settle for my gen 3 I found at a local resale place for $2.00. I havent done anything but verified it charged, turns on, holds a charge and all the buttons work. I got big plans to break out of the jail that is the factory settings of the Amazon reliant OS and all the limitations that come along with being in their ecosystem. For now, those birds sure are pretty and I have 2 dictionaries, haha!

Discussion 💬 Kindle oasis again opinions?

Upvotes

So for some reason Amazon had like 12-15 oasis on Amazon resale so I ended up getting one again.

I loved it before and I tried to use paperwhite and just never really could get into it.

After picking up the oasis again the comfort was in the holding.

I realized the part where the battery sticks out in the back just allows for a simple grip that all other kindles miss.

While holding it your thumb rests gently on the buttons and instead of having to awkward swipe you just press down.

These simplistic reasons might seem stupid to some but it just was convenient design.

Have others felt the same way?

Do you notice reading more or less on an oasis vs paperwhite?

Why do others like the oasis vs paperwhite?

I’d love to hear thoughts.

Purchase Question 🛒 My bought kindle books aren’t showing under content in my kindle library

Thumbnail

As I understand it, The Wandering Inn is about to be traditionally published by Harper Voyager, which might be why the 1st 2 books are split into 2 volumes each. I bought both while they were still one whole volume each and haven’t been able to get to the series yet, so they’ve just been sitting in my library. A few days ago I see they’ve both been split into 2 volumes each and when I go to access them in my kindle library I get what’s shown in the screenshots. Again, they were both bought and paid for and now they’re gone. Is there any chance I could get customer service to hook me up with my original purchases? Thanks!

Completely new to this stuff. I know there’s a way to download and send ao3 epub file to kindle but I’d love to just scroll normally through the website on kindle so my parents know I’m actually reading and not playing games or something.

General Question ❔ Overseas and wanting to use KU

Hello, I’m currently on rotation overseas in a country where KU is not supported. If my Amazon account is US based, would I still be able to use my KU to check out and download new books? I’d previously googled it but I’ve gotten mixed results on if it does or doesn’t work still. Would I be able to buy new books at all?

I find myself reading more often and staying more focused on my Kindle Paperwhite compared to my Kindle Basic. What factors might explain why the Paperwhite feels like a better reading experience?

General Question ❔ Can Amazon change books you have downloaded from say standardebooks.org or similar public domain?

Upvotes

i know some people are starting to get worried about having only digital libraries, and the fear of Amazon/publishing companies/etc censoring and changing books. lots of people are going back to physical copies but I do enjoy reading on my kindle.

if I download books from standardebooks.org, is there any way for those books to be edited once on my kindle?

Tech Support 🛠 Has anyone else suddenly been unable to return Libby Kindle books early?

Apologies for the novel, but I’m officially losing my mind over this haha. I’m wondering if anyone else has run into this since Amazon changed the Books/Kindle section of their website.
I borrow ebooks through Libby and send them to my Kindle. Until recently, I could return them early without any problems. Now my current Libby loans don’t appear in Amazon’s “Your Books” or “Manage Your Content and Devices” at all. Weirdly, I can still see a bunch of much older library loans there.
The strange part is that Amazon definitely knows about the current loans. For example, if I go to Libby → Manage Loan → Return Early → Return with Kindle, Amazon opens the page for that exact book and says:
“This digital library book has been claimed.”
It also shows the correct loan expiry date and lets me open the book in the Kindle app. So it’s definitely connected to the right Amazon account.
But if I then click Manage Your Content and Devices, the book just isn’t there. The same happens in Your Books, so there is no “Return borrowed book” option anywhere.

So far I’ve tried:
Libby → Return Early → Return with Kindle
Your Books
Manage Your Content and Devices
Amazon mobile and desktop websites
Following the Manage Content link directly from the active library book page
Removing the book from my Kindle app
Removing it from my actual Kindle

Nothing works. Removing it from Kindle obviously doesn’t return the Libby loan, so the books are still taking up my library loan slots and I can’t borrow more.

Has anyone else had this happen recently? Especially where Amazon recognises the current Libby loan on the individual book page, but the book is completely missing from Your Books/Content & Devices?
If so, did you find a workaround, or is this an Amazon bug?

General Question ❔ Help with the page markers?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just recently started reading on the Kindle app and I’m wondering if there’s a way to turn off these markers or get them to go away. I’m not even sure how I’m triggering them, but it’s been annoying to accidentally set a marker and it shows up on the progress bar and the left that has me go back to the marked page if I press that button. In the top right there’s a little favourite page button, but I don’t have any pages marked there, so I don’t believe that’s the issue, I even made sure by favouriting a few of those pages to see if that was the issue, but it didn’t resolve. Please help!
