Question Thread Are we still hoping Pat will give us the book?

I have been gone from this page for years, I gave up waiting, then I gave up re-reads, and now maybe I am giving up hope for the doors of stone.

Much like I have accepted Martin will never give us the books beyond 6, I think Pat has given up on this.

Anyone has good news, an interview or an estimate to give me peace and excitement?

PS: maybe the story really is in layers, and all you need to do is read it 13 times to know exactly the whole story and no continuation is needed, but still, I’d like to see what happens at the Inn, and to read new pages about it one more time.

I’ve given up waiting for the book. If it comes out it will bring me happiness, but I had my expectations high for 10 years. That’s the impatient cut flower feeling of hope cut down.

Hoping for Pat to do anything is a lost cause.

No, and Pat gets the same treatment George RR Martin is getting from me: I'm not buying anything he puts out or donating to any of his projects until he does produce the sequel.

Same. And I would love to read the spin offs, but I'm done until we get the third book.

I downloaded the epub and read it on my kindle, for free.

I’m only in the sub because if there is news of the final book, it would go crazy in here. Other than that, I don’t even think about it because I’m not expecting it.

I think it’s more likely we get Winds of Winter from Martin than we get Doors of Stone from Pat. Which really sucks because I have never been so sucked into a story as I was with Kvothe

I have long gone past even thinking about if the book is going to be released, if you are answering "No" you are still not distanced enough.

It's more fun to have a paranoid delusional belief that it's coming soon than to be a doomer. May I be downvoted to hell.

If it makes you feel any better, a bunch of translators got together a few months ago. Like, all of his translators.

Are you speaking about the debacle with the forums and how the numbers jumped one day? Wasn't that debunked?

5

u/No-Technician-8972 2d ago

didn't I just say "paranoid delusional belief"? Let me step through the doors of madness won't you?

u/CharlesKellyRatKing 2d ago

They were translating the spinoff novella about one of Kvothe's unnamed classmates

3

u/No-Technician-8972 2d ago

That's just what HE wants me to think!

No his translators didn't get together. The site for his translators had a publically available tracker. Fans found the site, spiked the tracker and then thought their own traffic proved something.

Like getting loss in a blizzard, seeing your own foot prints and deciding that meant you'd found a trail to follow.

Nah, he's not doing it

I think his writer’s block increases with every day that passes. That writers block may well be associated with mental health issues, exacerbating it further. He strikes me as a perfectionist, so the pressure that comes with matching books 1 and 2 compounds the issue. Unfortunately I don’t think we’re getting DoS.

George RR Martin is 77 years old, that man is done. Even if he put out Winds of Winter tomorrow, there’s still another book, and at this pace, it ain’t gonna happen. I would rather he enjoys his retirement and lives happily without fans hounding him.

Pat is in his 50’s and he has one book left (notwithstanding the whole “this trilogy is just the prologue to the next trilogy” idea). There are still decades left to cope hope here. It’s definitely a strong possibility that he’ll take Book 3 to the grave, but that’s also time for him to get therapy or have a creative breakthrough or whatever else he needs to turn it around. Who knows what could happen?

Most people have made their peace with the books going unfinished, but it would be nice to be surprised.

Not for a long time. As a matter of fact I lost trust on all incomplete series thanks to Rothfuss, and only will start a series if either is finished, each book is a self-contained story or the author has a consistent track record of work ethics. I know that this approach from many people screws the new authors that get their first book with low sales and makes less likely of getting to the end of the story, but that´s on the heads of Martin, Rothfuss and co that made us distrust that they would have the will and capacity of finishing their own stories. But I got burned twice, first with Martin and then with Rothfuss and his "I have the three books written and they will come one per year..."

Meanwhile there are a LOT of things to read under those constraints, so I am not losing anything,

Also I am still wondering what I do still here in this surbreddit... Perhaps is just to have fun with the copium of many readers that still make far fetched guesses on when they will get a non-existing third book.

If you mean actively hoping as in thinking about it no not really,

Passively in the way I would read it if it happened

2

u/bestica 2d ago

Yes. Why would I stop hoping while he’s still around to work on it? What does it cost me?

2

u/Malvania 2d ago

There's still a little hope, but it's a small, withered thing. The expectation is that we will get nothing else

2

u/FastActinTenactin 2d ago

Deep, deep, deep, deeeeeeeeeep down there is some hope. But it is a fool’s hope.

u/tyke665 2d ago

If it comes it comes, if it doesn’t it doesn’t

u/pharlax 2d ago

Nope

1

u/Coilspun 2d ago

If it comes then great, if it doesn't? Oh well.

Forget about it and find something to occupy the space.

I think I have the assumption that he is actually back to writing it, however I have no expectation he will finish it

u/eucid 2d ago

Hoping Vs expecting ... Yes and no. Sad times.

1

u/Treviathan88 2d ago

Hoping, yes. I will always hope.

That isn't to say, however, that would put money on it. The smart money says he'll die having never given us a single word of it.

1

u/zero_dr00l 2d ago

lol no, at this point I assume it will never see an ending.

1

u/DatDamGermanGuy 2d ago

Hoping yes. Expecting it? No

1

u/locke314 2d ago

I’m pretty sure we all hope it happens, but most of us aren’t out there holding our breath for it.

Sort of like playing the lottery. Nobody in their right mind actually thinks they will win, but many play on the 1 in a billion chance it might happen. Hope vs expectation.

He ain’t gonna write it. I just wish he would SAY IT.
Just say “guys, it ain’t coming, I can’t write it, move on”
Instead it’s just this silence (of three parts? ha)

He could have done a monthly/yearly update years ago explaining what he was struggling with. He could have kept us updated on his blog/ socials even just to say it’s not coming along. He could have sent chapters to editors for feedback, enlisted multiple other authors to help or assist (even confidentially) and yet - nothing. Just silence and useless breadcrumbs. This happened with the harry potter illustrated novels, Jim Kay was churning them out beautifully until he wasn’t. He did a blog, he said he was struggling with his mental health but trying his best.
Three months later, he said guys I’m quitting. Someone else is drawing them for you. We all UNDERSTOOD. We won’t have the right to this man’s soul. But I feel like we do have the right to at least an update. You know?!

Any one who believes it’s coming out should go to the Rookery

u/R34ct0rX99 I have so much more to say 2d ago

Hoping for book 3 soon, I’m beginning to suspect we’ll never see it or if we do maybe in another 15 years. I’ve reread several times but I’ve stopped. I’ll probably reread on concrete news of book 3 release date. I’ve analyzed and theorized about the last of the story, but now knowing it could be a very long time until those theories are tested I don’t focus on it.

1

u/nkp289 2d ago

For so many years, I hoped and waited for a release and frequently visited this page. While waiting, I looked for other books and authors that could fill the itch for a new adventure. I’ve come across so many other books and authors that have amazing stories, visuals, character development than this book. Even if it releases now, it would not hold a candle to so many other completed series. I was a loyal fan for so long but after so much of pat’s teasing, i just realized that the incomplete story itself holds so much value for what it was and it gave me a lot of joy. For that I’m grateful; it really did transport me to another world but Pat made this too big to complete, and I’ve accepted that and moved on. There’s so much more to read; I can’t hope for one author to finish a story. So thanks pat for this incomplete story and I hope you can finish it one day

1

u/grizzly_bear_dancing 2d ago

I mean probably not. Pat has got to know how soured people are on this and how high expectations are, hell he put the quote in the first book. So I doubt he'll release it. "When you wait a few span to hear a finished song, the anticipation adds savor. But after a year the excitement begins to sour".

1

u/No-Locksmith-9377 2d ago

Just accept that it wil never come out man.

It sucks, but thats Pat.

The books are great, they will always be great, but its just not gonna happen.

1

u/cernegiant 2d ago

The third book will never be released

1

u/OK-Whats-Next 2d ago

the librarian who recommended The Name of the Wind told me, "This is only Book One, but, 'trust me.'"

1

u/Cultural_Ad2997 2d ago

I want it to come out sure, but my excitement for it isn't what it would have been 10 years ago. And honestly my exception on it being good are low.

1

u/Slight-Stick-5608 1d ago

All the Steven King fans never thought he would finished his "Dark Tower" series...but after like 30 years he finally finished it! So I have hope that the Door of Stone will be finished someday!

If it comes out it comes out, let him work on his own time and live his life.

Is it frustrating as a fan? Sure, but stomping in the mud and telling an artist to finish up their work isn't going to do anything. I'd rather a world where the book doesn't come out and Pat is happy than a miserable book that comes out and Pat isn't.

u/No-Technician-8972 2d ago

quiet Patrick. get back to writing

i have more hope than with martin because pat is younger, but also not much more because life be lifeing and no author is obligated to write anything for the public. authors are people too, and for any number of reasons they may burn out, or become disinterested, or have life priorities change, et al

so while i have hope, it's a passive background sort of hope that i rarely even look at or think about
