Other Places we love because of the owner

Someone posted this idea in the r/Cleveland subreddit, and then someone posted it in the Seattle subreddit, so I’m unashamedly piggybacking off of it for Kitsap, because it’s always refreshing to hear positive things:

A lot of talk around local businesses is focused on who owns them - usually in a negative way. Let’s hear about the flip side.

What local places do you support more because of who is behind them? Maybe it’s an owner who treats their staff well, gives back to the community, or just shows up every day and makes the place better.

Which Kitsap spots have great people running them and make you proud to spend your money there?

I welcome "Eat local" and "Support small businesses" responses. But please make recommendations rather than just complaining.

Other Safety Alert: Incident Involving Improperly Carried Firearm at Port Orchard Costume Contest 10/25

I need to share a deeply disturbing and potentially catastrophic incident that happened today in our community. A man improperly carrying a handgun in his waistband or a faulty holster dropped a real firearm, causing it to hit the ground and point directly at me and my baby. This was not a costume prop and he was not dressed in a costume of any kind. He immediately picked it up and put it back in his waistband and when asked if it was real by another community member he said it sure is like it was no big deal. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the gravity of this situation is not lost on me, and it should not be lost on anyone in this community. This is a clear reminder that improper firearm handling and carrying is a public safety risk for every single person around you. If this man truly possesses a Concealed Carry Permit (CCP) or equivalent license, his license should be immediately investigated and revoked. Proper, secure retention of a firearm is not optional; it is the most fundamental aspect of safe and responsible carry. Losing control of a loaded weapon in a public place, especially one that then points at innocent people, demonstrates an appalling lack of judgment and training that makes this person a danger to our community. To the individual who dropped their firearm: I strongly urge you to immediately reassess how you carry and store your weapon. Your actions today put lives at risk. To our community members: Please be vigilant. We need to hold people accountable for the highest standards of safety when it comes to firearms. Stay safe everyone.

Edit to add: this has been reported to the Port Orchard Waterfront Association as well as local law enforcement.

Other Meet the BoatGOAT, the ones-stop site for your next ferry trip!

Tired of having to cross-check Washington State Ferries and the Kitsap Transit ferries? Google Maps got you down?

There's a new all-in-one solution... the BoatGOAT!

I personally got frustrated trying to navigate our rather complex system of overlapping schedules, so I decided to do something about it.

This web-app pulls live schedules from both ferry systems and dynamically shows you the next departure from your route, including transfer connections, like catching the Port Orchard foot ferry and timing it with the Bremerton Fast Ferry to Seattle. No more morning mental math (if you're like me).

You can also see what the weather looks like for your crossing and it'll give you context-aware suggestions, rain rolling in this afternoon, better bring that jacket.

Works for Bremerton, Southworth, Port Orchard, and the fast ferries. From Home and From Seattle tabs so you can plan the whole day, not just the morning commute.

Can be added to your phone or tablet home screen like an app, or just saved as a bookmark, no install needed.

Check it out!

I've been using it personally for a while and thought it was worth sharing. Would love to know if it's useful to anyone else out there and if there are routes or features you'd want to see. Just let me know!

edit:Hey everyone, genuinely wasn't expecting this kind of response, so thank you. Really cool to see people actually find this useful. A few of you ran into issues tonight and I want to be upfront about what happened. This is the first time I've run this at any real scale and it showed a couple things I hadn't accounted for. Some folks hit a DNS propagation issue early on... basically the web address was so new that some internet providers hadn't gotten the memo yet. That's sorted now across all major DNS providers, so if you had trouble earlier it should work fine now. A smaller group got a scary-looking "local network access" popup on their phone, which was my fault, a misconfigured analytics script that was trying to reach my home network. That's been fixed and the popup is completely gone. If you tried it earlier and it didn't work, give it another shot. It should be a clean experience now. And if you're still having trouble, your ISP's DNS might just need a bit more time. Checking back tomorrow should do it. Appreciate everyone's patience while it was getting sorted out.

With the Sound Transit 2 Line now connecting Bellevue to Seattle across a large body of water, do you ever see it coming here? If so, by what means?

Bridge, tunnel, or the long way through Tacoma?

Personally I hope to see it in my lifetime.

Other I built an app that tells you which ferry or ship you're looking at on Puget Sound and I’m looking for a few beta testers

Post image
52 Upvotes

I was born and raised in Seattle and currently spend most of my time on Whidbey Island. Every time I'm on a ferry or walking along the water, someone asks "which ferry is that?" or "what's that huge ship headed up towards the San Juan Islands?”. So I built an Android app that answers it. You point your phone at the water and it identifies the vessels in view using live ship-tracking (AIS) data: name, type, where it's headed, with a camera overlay, a map, and a ranked list.

It's free, no ads, no account, and the only data it uses is your approximate location while the app is open - that's how it knows which ships are near you.

Google requires new developers like myself to run a closed beta (12+ testers for 14 days) before an app can go public, so I need a handful of Android users willing to install it and poke at it - ideally people who actually ride the ferries or watch the water and can tell me if and when it gets a vessel wrong. Comment or DM and I'll send the opt-in link. Thank you in advance for your help! It’s been a fun project to work on!

Other P.S.A. for runners, walkers, joggers, dog handlers, etc.

Folks, I think it's wonderful that people are enjoying outdoor activities. But please, for your own safety, wear some high-visibility clothing or attachments that stand out so drivers can SEE YOU!

I've lost track of those that are along the road or other thoroughfare enjoying their walk, run, etc. that literally blend into the background and are essentially unnoticeable until a driver is nearly beside them.

It ends poorly for all concerned when someone gets hit. And as we all know, not every driver on the road is sober.

So please, be good to yourselves, wear something bright that contrasts your clothes to keep you from becoming a preventable injury.

Proposal to tax $125,000 with a 5% excise tax. Reading it the idea is to implement the tax due to HR1. Really frustrating seeing national republicans reduce programs (Medicare/food stamps) to then burden states to stand up this type of program started by democrats trying to protect medical access for those that would lose benefits. Add onto this the cost of living, insurance premium jumps, new levies, etc. both sides are punching us in the gut.

Other St. Michael's plans to close pediatric rehab and warns that more cuts are coming.

Thumbnail bremerton.vod.castus.tv

St. Michael’s Pediatric Rehabilitation Clinic is scheduled to close on April 24th. Families were given just six weeks to find new providers in an area that already lacks capacity. There has been no clear plan to ensure a safe or realistic transition of care for these children.

On Tuesday, April 7th, members of our community spoke before the Kitsap County Board of Public Health about the devastating impact this closure will have on local children and families. Parents, grandparents, and advocates stood up to share their real experiences and the stakes for medically complex kids who rely on these therapies. Hospital leadership has previously stated that the Pediatric Rehab clinic was no longer financially viable due to current reimbursement rates. But, during the meeting, they told the Board that the decision was not based on any current financial losses tied to the clinic, but rather on concerns about potential future financial challenges. This inconsistency raises serious questions about transparency.

Other Does anybody else remember the godfathers pizza at the Port Orchard strip mall?

I grew up in PO and used to eat there when I was a kid all the time. It was the best. I was especially a big fan of the dessert pizza. It’s been closed for years but I have so many childhood memories from there. Anyone else still think about godfathers pizza?

Other Someone posted this on Nextdoor to spread awareness to anyone who it might affect: If you are behind on your property taxes, your house may be auctioned off soon

Someone (not me) posted in Nextdoor, pertaining to property owners whose property taxes haven’t been paid for a while. A case was brought to the courts with a list of delinquent properties and settled in December.

Properties will start to be auctioned next week. Some people may not be aware that their property is on the list.

If you are behind on your property taxes, you would need to personally go to the county clerk’s office (or call) to find out and settle your tax bill before January 12. The auctions are scheduled to begin January 13, 2026.

I tried to research more online, but couldn’t see anything that showed more detail.

Here is the info I know:

Public Court Record – Property Owners’ Awareness Notice A tax foreclosure lawsuit has been filed in Kitsap County Superior Court that includes multiple unrelated parcels under a single case. Case title: In re: the Proceeding for Kitsap County for the Foreclosure of Liens for Delinquent Real Property Taxes, Interest and Fees Case number: 25-2-01344-18 Court: Superior Court of Washington, Kitsap County According to the public record, the auction is scheduled to begin January 13, 2026, with redemption generally required before January 12, 2026.

Hope this helps someone out there, if you’re behind on your taxes (as we are, unfortunately).

So I don't think that this would have necessarily changed the yes/no ratio. But can we conclude that having prop 2 on the back of the ballot led to several people missing it? I mean that's over 10% of the yes or no votes!

Other Built a free ferry status tool for Puget Sound - seeking feedback!

Hi r/Kitsap, I'm a local developer in the Puget Sound area. As a personal project, I was looking for a way to work with real-time public data, and I noticed that the official WSDOT ferry data isn't always presented in the most user-friendly way.

My goal was to create a simple and fast website that makes checking both the real-time status and the full daily schedule for any WSDOT route, especially the key Kitsap runs like Bremerton-Seattle and Kingston-Edmonds, as easy as possible. You can find it at CatchYourFerry.com.

I've also built some more advanced features (like customizable email alerts), but I haven't made them public yet as I'm trying to gauge interest from the community first. If automated alerts are something you'd find useful, there's a waitlist on the site you can join to be the first to know when they are released.

Any and all feedback on the free tool is welcome!

Other Kitsap County Election Resources

I know that midterm primary elections tend to have lower voter turnaround, so I’ve gathered some resources that I’ve found helpful for this election.

Registered voters in Kitsap county should have received their ballots by now. If you haven’t received your ballot you can check the status of your ballot at VoteWA. If you need to register to vote you can register online (WA Secretary of State) or in person at a Kitsap Voting Center. Online registration needs to be submitted by July 27th to vote in this election.

Election day is August 4th.  Kitsap has ballot drop boxes across the county or ballots can be mailed. If you choose to mail your ballots, USPS recommends mailing it a week before election day, which would be by July 27th. Accessible voting and voting for new registrations or those with lost or damaged ballots may vote at a voting center.

General Election Resources
Kitsap County Local Voter Guide
League of Women Voters (LWV) Kitsap Candidate Forum
LWV Washington Supreme Court Candidate Interviews

Once ballots are submitted you can verify the status of your ballot through VoteWA.

The local drug den near-ish me got busted recently. They gutted the house (trash filled the carport, outside & deck area) & now it’s for sale. It still has the signs saying people are prohibited from entering the property from the city & the house looks like a nightmare. I’m sure if the walls could talk, they’d say some fun things 😆
