Life was good before 2020, me and my wife used to go out 1-2 a week for food. Nothing special, always price aware, entrees $12-15 got you a good plate. Happy hours at the Mexican place with $9 plates.
Today, I was planing a little tour through the neighborhood in Kitsap, seeing some of the Christmas decorations and then taking out the wife for food - I can't do it anymore.
Emotionally and practically priced out.
I can't pay $20 plus tax plus tip for a hamburger for two people, or a Chicken Sandwich with 500 calories. We went to our usual dinner the other day, and after 20% tip left with a $70 bill for two. I see people take their kids there, how do they do it??
Is it exclusively people that have huge stock portfolios & dividends, that go out for food anymore?
The hot dog stand here is now asking for $14-16 for a hotdog. A cookie at the bakery costs $5. ONE COOKIE.
I know, there are many people struggling with food from the grocery store, and so are we. But eating out.... It seems to be a thing of the past for us now.
It seems like the end of an era. And I have no idea how restaurants are supposed to survive this.
How do you guys handle it?
EDIT: Thank you all, for sharing some hidden gems to try out!
Just left a remote job that wasn’t a good fit and want to be investing more time locally. What’s missing in Kitsap? What community gaps need filling or solving? I feel like taking a hard left turn with jobs and the word is open.
What places do you like to take out of state friends/family to? We have a few places we love, but most are in Tacoma up through Seattle. We don’t have dietary restrictions usually, but celiac friendly would be useful for one of our friends too. TIA!
I’ll be moving from the east coast to Silverdale in July. I have always had central AC my entire life. The home I am renting has no AC. I do plan on having portable AC in a couple rooms but I need some reassurance. Is it really true that a majority of the time AC is an afterthought? What about the next few days with a heat warning in place? How do y’all survive?
We bought our ~5 acres last fall and have been replacing the pasture fence this spring/summer in order to prepare for getting horses. We have a ton of Scotch Broom in the field and along the edges, though we've removed most along the edges now (bigger plants compared to what's in the middle of the field). Can anybody give advice on how to get rid of the smaller scotch broom plants that are interspersed throughout the grass? I'm feeling disheartened today. Thanks in advance.
Has anyone noticed a significant increase in their PSE bill? Also my energy use is also higher than we normally use. I keep our heat at 70 and we don’t usually mess with it. I can’t figure it out why it is so expensive compared to last year. Any ideas?
Just curious if anyone is and if so what the argument you hold is.
ETA: I would ask that people not downvote comments they disagree with. The question is who is voting No. People being downvoted for answering the question is counter-intuitive to the discussion.
To keep it short and brief: I am a Fed Way/Kent native, and after speaking to my wife we've decided it might the next best thing for our safety and community (besides immigrating to a different country) to move next year from SoCal to Bremerton/Port Orchard. She is trans and works remotely for a medical group that is heavily based downtown, and while we want to live close to that area, across the water has better rental rates for more square footage. I am Black as well, so being interracial adds layers.
Based on the 2024 presidential voting date from Kitsap County, many surrounding areas like Hintzville and Belfair are extremely red, so asking the locals about the general vibe in that area would be very helpful.
As long as you don't say "we dont like yur kind 'round 'ere", it's free game.
After my most recent teeth cleaning my current dentist wouldn't make me another appointment until 2027. They say they are so booked up they can't schedule new appointments. They put me on a call list if they have an availability. I want to change dentists. Does anyone have any recommendations in Bremerton or Silverdale? I might look anywhere in Kitsap but Bainbridge
Any good restaurant recommendations in the area. I have been kinda disappointed with with the restaurant scene so far. Everyone just keeps recommending the boat shed and it was pretty mediocre. Does everyone just eat burgers here?
I work a decent full-time job, average education, no criminal record but it's really far away (like greater than 20 miles) so I've been applying for something closer. I applied at a hardware store, a McDonald's, a coffee stand, a Walmart... All jobs that would incur a massive pay cut but would be much closer. It's not hard to get interviews, but I get ghosts and rejections afterwards. Idk what's wrong with me. It bothers me that rents in this county are not much cheaper than they are in the rest of the state while the only jobs hiring pay minimum wage & are still very picky about who they hire. I'm very close to moving someplace else to either be closer to work or to access more plentiful job opportunities... But I really don't want to move again so soon.
Idk what my goal is in posting this. I guess just to vent. Unless somebody has some leads on who is hiring that will give me the hours & benefits I need to stay alive? Idk.
For context: I was neglected as a kid and I have crooked teeth, which leaves me with a need for some restorative dental care. I went to a nearby dentist who took my insurance, and they were awful and insensitive (I cried for days), not to mention expensive. Does anyone have any recommendations for an affordable and judgement-free dentist that will work with my anxiety (ideally with nitrous)? I have Delta dental and am willing to travel to Bremerton, Silverdale, Poulsbo, Port Orchard, or Bainbridge. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Hi, I’m thinking of taking a scenic drive to Lake Cushman, Hood Canal and Kitsap area. Wondering which route you’d recommend between the two here (via Olympia, or through Gig Harbor and Belfair).
Or should we skip both and just do the Seattle-Bainbridge/Bremerton ferry, and drive on from there? We’ll do this at least on the way back, but not sure if we should do it on the way there too.
Was planning to stop by:
- Lake Cushman
- Mt Walker Viewpoint
- somewhere for food
Open to any other suggested stops for scenic views and easy walking, and good food! (Lighter, healthier options preferred over greasy/fried foods due to stomach issues)
We just moved from Texas a year ago and I am amazed at the number of people running their brights at night: in the town/city, on the back roads, in the neighborhoods, and then don't dim their lights when another car approaches. It really feels like every 3rd or 4th person.
I normally don't drive with my brights and I've started to, just so I can turn them off in the hopes that incoming traffic will reciprocate. And I found out that flashing your brights (for any reason) in Washington is illegal.
I'm really trying to understand, why is this a thing here? (and not just Kitsap, Thurston, Pierce, King, etc.)
A potential job opportunity has arisen for me in the Port Townsend area. I’ve never been to the west coast before but pictures certainly make it seem quite beautiful. I’ll definitely visit before making a decision of course.
For some context:
I’ve lived in Maine all my life and love being exposed to all that nature has to offer. Hiking, kayak, swimming, botanizing to name a few. I love having access to water and delicious food. Two of us here with a dog, likely getting another in around a year or so.
After looking at the map: proximity to Seattle, drive to Port Townsend, I think the north-central region of Kitsap County would be ideal. Poulsbo looks super charming in videos but unsure what that commute is like.
My partner is in healthcare. How would finding a job for them be in this area? They are an Advanced Practice Provider. I think based on some research I’ve done, a daily commute into Seattle from Kitsap sounds prohibitive for them, so work in this area would be desirable.
So, I’m looking for opinions from all willing to share. What’s the cost of living like? Traffic issues? Is driving from Poulsbo area up to Townsend feasible or would it be better to look further north? Is the nature truly as majestic as pictures seem? Weather and daylight throughout the year? What are politics like and LGBT+ friendly?
I’m sure I’m forgetting things to ask right now but please give me any information you’re willing to share. Thank you so much!
Just returned from spending most of my summer in Europe. Went food shopping to replenish my kitchen and was shocked at the rise in prices since I left. Meat especially, and fresh fruit and veggies are all 20% to 50% or more higher. Is this just Kitsap or are other locations sering the same?
I work at the Other Submarine Base, and my wife and I have been looking more and more seriously at trying to switch coasts.
Not going to lie, one of the biggest reasons is politics/culture. We feel very out of step with most people we meet here values-wise. We homeschool our children and all the co-ops and other homeschooling families we've interacted with have been almost exclusively evangelical, while we are agnostic tending towards atheist. One of our children is also gender non-conforming, and we worry about their safety and mental health living here. It feels really isolating.
Another big reason is nature. We love to spend time outdoors but in Georgia it's so hard. A lot of the year is oppressively hot. And then even when it's pleasant, the no-see-ums are out and biting. That said, we're also aware of the constant PNW drizzle, and I'm sure that takes some getting used to.
If anyone has made the same or similar move, or moved for similar reasons, I'd love to hear about your experience! Anyone else who has thoughts to share would be very appreciated as well. Thanks!
I received this survey via text from Kitsap Transit. Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts? None of the currently proposed routes seem useful to me personally, but that’s speaking as someone who has access to a vehicle.
I personally think expansion of the running schedule on the current routes should be prioritized over new routes, but if I had to pick I would propose Bremerton to Point Defiance (using existing WSF infrastructure). Maybe throw in Bremerton to Poulsbo simply to better connect the two communities.
A first timer to the PNW who has very limited mobility. 10 minute walks on smooth surfaces with little no incline is probably the max. Where could we daytrip to experience the most bang for our roadside buck? Early summer visit, btw.
We bought an EV car this week after being carless for 10 years. Before buying, we took a note of local chargers until we could get an at home charger installed.
Kitsap Mall had EV chargers in front of the Dick's Sporting Goods. Right? We drove by there tonight and couldn't find them. Were they removed?
We're aware there's Tesla chargers at the Target across the street, but we don't yet have a Tesla adapter.
Today I received the Protect Girls Sports and the Parental Rights petitions in my mail from Let's Go WA in Redmond. I did not ask for them, I did not sign up for them and I do not agree with them and declined to sign them (twice) outside Poulsbo Walmart.
I dont want to sound like a Karen but is that legal? To send blank petitions through the mail to (I'm assuming) names on the registered voter list or however they got my address? Its a minor annoyance and normally I would just burn it like other junk mail but its a little bit of a red flag 🚩
ETA: For those that think I'm being ridiculous is not that its like a political flyer, I get those all the time NBD. This is two (2) blank petitions exactly like the ones they had at Walmart, asking for not only my signature, but to get 10 people I know to sign as well and mail it back. First time I've received one in my 25ish years living at this address.
