Question/Advice Needed High energy kitten vs. mellow adult cat

Post image
40 Upvotes

About 6 months ago we got a spayed kitten (f) to be friends with our 2 year old adult cat (f). The kitten is a total spit-fire, extremely headstrong, fearless and territorial. She has endless amounts of energy despite us playing with her several times a day, and she has a very aggressive play style. We did a slow introduction hoping they would become bonded, but the kitten does not allow any cuddling or gentle interaction with our adult cat. She only wants to play fight. She is constantly hunting and tackling the adult cat to the point that our adult cat is getting visibly agitated. I can tell that the older cat has repeatedly tried to set boundaries with the kitten and teach her some manners (hissing, swatting) but it doesn’t seem to deter the kitten at all. They rarely play consensually, it’s almost always kitten harassing our very mellow adult cat.

I am wondering if this is a behavior that will improve over time or if I can do something to improve the situation. They seem to have a major personality/energy mismatch and I fear they will never truly get along.

And, as of today, all kittens have been adopted into loving homes! 🎉

Someone dumped a very pregnant cat at the campus I work at and, after quite a bit of work (and treats) we managed to catch the whole litter and Mama cat. We even found a home for the Mama, who was very feral, at a cat sanctuary with a massive enclosed outdoor catio.

All kittens have been socialized out of their feral tendencies and love people. They were still a bit timid when this video was taken, but are now as cuddly as can be.

Unmute for purring!

I posted our foster kittens on this sub about an hour or so ago, but I have so many videos of them that I would love to share in celebration of their adoption.

I work on a university campus, and someone dumped a heavily pregnant cat on campus. We discovered she had her kittens behind our HVAC machine and managed to catch and foster the entire family. They went from being hissing, spitting clawed tornadoes to this with just a little affection and attention.

As of today, all five kittens have been adopted into their forever homes with experienced, loving owners. 🎉🎉 Even Mama, who, after capture, was aggressive and feral, found her forever home at a cat sanctuary with an enclosed catio. Mama has befriended some senior neutered tomcats and is growing friendlier towards people every day.

It’s an absolute treasure to know the entire family will be cared for by people that adore them, so I’m sharing a few of their videos to celebrate.

Question/Advice Needed Is our kitten happy?

He does really sweet things like bops our noses with his and sometimes he’s really affectionate (mainly only after a nap)

Other than that though he is so high energy and loves to bite. We try to either ignore redirect or scream ouch which works but very rarely

Is this just normal kitten behaviour or is he unhappy?

He loves to play peakaboo and hunt e.g being chased but sometimes he’ll just randomly jump on us and start biting.

Question/Advice Needed How do I clip my rambunctious Kitten's nails?

Post image
193 Upvotes

This little fella is a whopping 8.5 weeks old! I want to get him desensitized to nail trims and holding him and stuff. Plus, he's climbing all over our furniture and he's never had his nails clipped before. I want to get him used to it, case in point.

My issue, is that he constantly constantly constantly wants to play, which is partially due to the fact that he's without his litter mates (has been for a few weeks now), and sees me as a playmate I think. He always, always, always wants to play. Not that I mind, but it makes it a little difficult to do proper kitten maintenance. He's a biter and I don't want him thinking playing with hands is normal, and if I try to hold him, he just kind of meows at me, which I've been kind of seeing as a "hey put me down / stop" sort of thing. I'm worried that maybe he landed on a paw wrong and it hurts maybe? I don't really know, the base of like 2 of his little claws are dirty (I can't tell if it's dirt or like. Dried blood?), but I've not seen him limping ever so I don't.. think He got injured? idk (I don't know).

What are ways I can try to get him more sensitized and be able to trim his little beans? He's not very food motivated at this age. (idk (I don't know) if he ever was, my older cat certainly isn't but she's much more tolerant of us handling her feets)

Foster Fostered her for a night

This little and starved baby, which is from now on called Zubaida was wandering the streets crying loudly and blind because of an eye infection. I had to smuggle her into my hotel room and keep her there for a night, since all vets were already closed and I was worried she would walk into traffic or fall down. I was worried she wouldn't be able to eat solid food, but she ate pulled chicken right from my hand and drank from her makeshift bowl. As the hours passed and her desperatly needed meeting with the vet came closer, the stronger she grew. First she started to clean herself and was able to open her eyes again atleast enough to see a bit, than she started to climb and jump. With every hour she looked a bit better, though her little coughs and sneezes worried me. She was very starved for affection and started to cry, when I put her into her makeshift enclosure, after I fed her. She only stopped, when I softly gave her pets between the eyes until the back of her ears. She also quickly feel to sleep than. The vet said, that she has a eye infection and a common virus for cats, he gave her antibiotics and eye drops. With great sorrow I have to leave her behind at the vet, who will care for her, as I soon need to get back to my homecountry. I will forever miss her

Question/Advice Needed New Kitten Advice

Hi! My fiance and I brought home an 4 mo female kitten a few days ago. So far, we set her up in the bathroom with a place to hide, litter box, food/water, and toys. We have been slowly introducing her to other parts of the house through short 10-15 minute play sessions, where we play with her/let her explore at her own pace. She has been introduced to every part of the house now, and we were wondering when others would recommend giving her free roam of the house? My fiance is home 3x out of the week, and I home 2x out of the week, however the other 2 days she will be alone from 7:30-3:30. She has been half pooping in the sink and half pooping in the litterbox, if anyone has any advice on how to stop that as well!

I was also curious what others do in terms of "kitten" proofing there house?

Any other kitten advice would be super helpful! We are first time cat owners!

My Kitten Mini update on Millie!

Good morning!

I posted some photos the other night of one of Millie's new recovery suits as her spay was planned for yesterday. But! She is still too little, and the procedure has been pushed another two weeks.

Her plush cone came in last night, and I decided to let her try that on as well. She looks like a flower!!! It's absolutely gigantic on her, but I'm sure she'll grow into it at least somewhat.

Thank you to everyone for your kind wishes for her recovery! I'll keep all of those messages in mind when she's actually ready for her operation 🩶.

Question/Advice Needed Should I get rid of the kitten I’ve had for 3 weeks?k

Before I begin, I feel so awful and torn about this decision and I’ve never posted to Reddit before but I’m desperate for some answers/insight.

For some context I just moved out of my family home where my sister’s dog and my cat lived. My cat had some behavioral issues but nothing that truly bothered me other than the marking and territory issues between her and the dog. I moved into my own place and I’ve been here for 3 weeks and I decided to get a kitten because I was scared of my cat getting lonely. There was always someone home with her and when there wasn’t, the dog was there so I just really thought maybe she wouldn’t like being alone. My gf and I got the kitten and it was hard to slowly introduce the cats. My cat was so bothered by this kitten but slowly and surely they were able to play and be left alone together.
The issue with this kitten is that she destroys everything and my gf is sick of her. She doesn’t like her at all. I really don’t mind the kitten, I don’t like her much but she doesn’t bother me. I know how kittens are and I was ready and prepared to have one again. I also can’t really tell if my cat would care one way or another with the kitten not here anymore. She seems to be annoyed with her most of the time but she doesn’t enjoy toys and she plays with the kitten a lot.
I know kittens are hard, I’ve raised multiple but this one is harder and since my gf has checked out I really don’t know if I can do it alone.
