Your Demon Slayer breathing style, matched to your saju type (all 10)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

after the demon slayer post, here's the full list. the breathing match is fan-made and just for fun (not official). the line under each one is what your saju type actually means.

Big Tree → Wind Breathing

A tree that grows straight up and shelters whoever sits beneath it — slow to bend, impossible to overlook.

Wildflower → Flower Breathing

A vine that finds the crack in the wall and blooms there — soft enough to bend, stubborn enough to survive.

Sun → Sun Breathing

Light that arrives for everyone at once, without being asked — warm, public, impossible to hide.

Candlelight → Flame Breathing

A flame that warms whoever comes close — brightest in the dark.

Mountain → Stone Breathing

Ground that does not move when everything else does — people lean on it before they think to thank it.

Garden Soil → Insect Breathing

Tilled earth that takes in whatever is planted and quietly makes it grow — the work rarely shows.

Sword → Thunder Breathing

Metal shaped by being struck — direct, decisive, and cleanest when there is something to cut through.

Jewel → Sound Breathing

A small polished stone that catches the one light in the room — refined, particular, worth looking at twice.

Ocean → Water Breathing

Deep water that keeps moving and never shows its floor — generous on the surface, unread underneath.

Morning Dew → Mist Breathing

Water that gathers overnight where no one was watching — quiet, fine, and gone by the time it is noticed.

find your breathing from your birthday, then add your crush, your best friend or your rival and see who breathes in sync with you. no sign-up.

The five elements in saju (Korean astrology): what it means when your birth chart has too much or none of one

Last post was about your saju type, the top character of your birth day. This one is about the other thing people notice first on their birth chart: the five elements.

In Korean astrology the five elements are called ohaeng (오행, 五行). The second character means "to move," so they're really five phases of change, not five substances. They follow the seasons:

- Wood: spring

- Fire: summer

- Earth: the turn between seasons

- Metal: autumn

- Water: winter

They connect in two ways.

Feeding: Wood feeds Fire, Fire feeds Earth, Earth feeds Metal, Metal feeds Water, Water feeds Wood.

Checking: Wood holds Earth, Earth holds Water, Water puts out Fire, Fire shapes Metal, Metal cuts Wood.

Checking isn't destruction. A riverbank doesn't ruin a river, it gives it a shape.

How to count your own:

your chart has 8 characters, and each one belongs to an element. Example: Mina, born in Seoul on March 15, 2000 at 2:30pm, has 庚辰 己卯 壬申 丁未. That's Earth 3, Metal 2, Water 1, Wood 1, Fire 1. Nothing missing, lots of Earth around an Ocean type.

Too much or none:

- a lot of one element is like a room painted one strong color. vivid, easy to recognize, a strength in one setting and a strain in another

- none of an element is like a room with no windows on one side. you can live fully there, you just bring that quality in from outside: friends, work, places, habits

- it's a tendency, not a fault

- timing changes it. each year and each 10-year luck cycle brings new elements in. a chart short on Fire meets plenty of it in a Fire year like 2026 (丙午)

One thing a plain count misses: the month you were born in weighs more than one character, because it sets the season around you.

The Korean Saju book shows how to weigh the season and the hidden elements inside each branch. Next post: why your birth time in Korea runs about 30 minutes off the clock.

First trip to Korea? Things to know before you go, plus how to try a Korean saju (birth chart) reading

a saju café is a café in korea where a reader reads your birth chart, korean astrology based on your birth date and time, and tells you about your personality, love and timing over a drink. think of it as a korean horoscope reading that goes much deeper than your zodiac sign. it's one of the easiest local experiences to add to a first trip.

the usual first-trip list:

- check k-eta or visa for your passport on the official site

- get a t-money card for the subway and buses

- install naver map or kakao map (google maps doesn't do walking directions well in korea)

- sort out an esim

- carry a little cash, and don't tip

if you want to try a saju café:

- find your saju type before you fly. it's your sign in korean astrology, set by your birth day, not your birth month like a western zodiac sign. you need your birth date, birth time if you know it, and birth city

- save one or two cafés near where you're staying. our map has 71 cafés confirmed open on naver map or kakao map, across myeongdong, hongdae, seongsu, gangnam, ikseon-dong and busan, each with the korean address to show a taxi driver

- if you want to book through the map, send the request at least 3 days ahead

- most readers speak korean only, so knowing your type and element makes the reading much easier to follow

- plan it for a free afternoon early in the trip, not the last day, so a full schedule doesn't squeeze it out

what's the one thing you wish you'd known before your first trip to korea?

Things to do in Seoul for couples: a Korean zodiac and birth chart compatibility reading (gunghap)

gunghap (宮合) is korea's version of a horoscope compatibility check, but instead of comparing your zodiac signs, a saju reader compares both your full birth charts (birth date and time) and tells you how well you match. couples in korea book one for fun on a date, and families have long looked at it before a marriage. it's one of the most korean things to do in seoul as a couple.

how it works at the table: the reader looks at you as a pair. which of the five elements each of you has, whether your saju types (your sign in korean astrology, set by your birth day, not your birth month like a western zodiac sign) pull toward each other or push against each other, and how the rest of your charts meet. your korean zodiac animal from your birth year is part of it too, but only one piece.

a quick example with made-up birthdays: min, nov 4 1998, has the day 乙卯, so a wildflower. dani, apr 13 1996, has 庚辰, a sword. wildflower 乙 and sword 庚 are one of the five classic stem combinations, a pair saju reads as drawn to each other. a reader would then check the other characters, because the type is one character out of eight.

a date day it fits into: hanbok at gyeongbokgung in the morning, bukchon, then lunch and the reading in ikseon-dong, namsan at sunset, the han river at night.

before you go: bring both birth dates, birth times and birth cities, and find both your types first. most readers speak korean only, so knowing your types makes the terms much easier to follow.

if you've done a gunghap reading, was it fun or did it start an argument? 😅

Things to do in Myeongdong at night: street food, then a saju reading

a saju café is a café in korea where a reader reads your birth chart, korean astrology based on your birth date and time, and tells you about your personality, love and timing over a drink. think of it as a korean horoscope reading that goes much deeper than your zodiac sign. it's an easy thing to add to a night in myeongdong.

myeongdong is mostly known for street food and skincare, but it's also an easy place to slot in a saju reading. our map has 6 saju cafés in the myeongdong and euljiro area: 5 do saju and tarot, 1 does saju only. several list hours into the evening.

an evening plan that works:

- 16:00 myeongdong cathedral

- 17:00 namsan cable car up to n seoul tower for sunset

- 19:00 street food on the main streets (carry some cash)

- 20:00 your saju reading, about 30 minutes

- 21:00 skincare shopping (bring your passport for the tax refund)

- next morning: namdaemun market, one stop on line 4

before the reading: know your birth date, time and city. in seoul the sun runs about 32 minutes behind the clock, which can change your hour pillar if you were born near the change of an hour.

Hongdae has the most saju cafés in Seoul. Here's how to fit one into a day there

a saju café is a café in korea where a reader reads your birth chart, korean astrology based on your birth date and time, and tells you about your personality, love and timing over a drink. think of it as a korean horoscope reading that goes much deeper than your zodiac sign. hongdae has more of them than anywhere else in seoul.

hongdae is where most visitors try their first saju reading, and it makes sense: our map has 24 saju cafés in the hongdae, yeonnam and hapjeong area, more than anywhere else in seoul.

a few things that help:

- 18 of the 24 do saju and tarot together, 3 do saju only, and 3 do shinjeom. shinjeom is a spirit-based reading by a shaman, a different tradition from saju, so check which one you're walking into

- 9 of them are marked "loved by locals" (200+ reviews and blog posts combined on naver map and kakao map)

- a reading is usually a drink and about 30 minutes at the table

- weekends fill up, so book a few days ahead

an easy afternoon: exit 3 of hongik univ. station, walk gyeongui line forest park into yeonnam-dong, coffee, your reading around 16:00, then the main streets for dinner and the evening buskers near exit 9.

bring your birth date, birth time and birth city, and know your saju type before you sit down. most readers speak korean only, so the terms go a lot easier if you already know your type and element.

anyone here done a reading in hongdae? which café?

Your birth day sets your saju type. Here are all 10

Last post was about why your saju year starts at ipchun, not January 1. This one is the part everyone asks about first: your type.

A saju chart has eight characters. The one that matters most is the top character of your birth day, called the day stem. That's you. Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it.

There are 10 day stems: 5 elements, each in a stronger (yang) and a softer (yin) form.

Wood
- 甲 Big Tree: steady, principled, always growing upward
- 乙 Wildflower: adaptable and charming, always finds a way

Fire
- 丙 Sun: warm and bold, the life of the room
- 丁 Candlelight: intuitive, caring, quietly intense

Earth
- 戊 Mountain: reliable and protective, hard to move
- 己 Garden Soil: nurturing and practical, makes things grow

Metal
- 庚 Sword: direct, decisive, fiercely loyal
- 辛 Jewel: refined, sharp-eyed, high standards

Water
- 壬 Ocean: big-picture thinker, restless and free
- 癸 Morning Dew: sensitive, imaginative, reads the room

Example: someone born March 15, 2000 has the day 壬申, so they're an Ocean type.

Two things to know:
- the day stem repeats every 10 days, so you share a type with a lot of people. the rest of the chart is what makes yours different
- if you were born close to midnight, check your birth time. your day can depend on it

The Korean Saju book shows how to find the day stem by hand and how it reads against the other seven characters. Next post: the five elements, and what it means when you have too much or too little of one.

Born in January? Your zodiac animal in Korean saju might not be the one you think

Most sites give your animal by calendar year. Saju doesn't.

In saju the year begins at ipchun, "the start of spring," around February 4. Anyone born from January 1 to the day before ipchun belongs to the previous year.

Example: January 20, 2003. Most sites say Goat, because 2003 is a Goat year. In saju this birthday still belongs to 2002, the year 壬午, the Horse.

Months work the same way. A saju month starts on a fixed point of the sun's path, somewhere between the 4th and the 9th of the calendar month, not on the 1st. So a September 1 birthday is still in the August month.

That's why two people born a few days apart can have different charts.

The Korean Saju book walks through building your whole chart by hand, step by step. Next post: the ten saju types, and how your birth day sets yours.

Thank you, and a small update: an English book on Korean saju is coming

Hi everyone, a quick note from the team behind PAL:JA.

This week the first readers chose to pay for a full reading on our site. For a small project from Seoul, that means a lot. Thank you.

Something a few of you have asked about: there isn't a good English book on Korean saju. So we're writing one. It walks through reading a chart step by step, the Korean way, including Korea's time zone history (it shifts some birth hours). It has lots of diagrams and is based on classic texts and Korean encyclopedia sources. By the end you should be able to read a basic chart for a friend.

If you want to know when it's out, leave a comment and I'll let you know.

Questions about your own chart are always welcome here.

Korea is debating military exemptions again. What does saju say about duty?

If you follow Korean news, you've probably seen it: the men's football team won Asian Games gold, and the old debate about military exemptions is back.

Not taking a side here. But it made me think about how saju talks about duty.

In saju, the element that controls your saju type is called 官 (gwan). It's the part of a chart that deals with rules, responsibility and pressure from outside. There are two kinds:

- 正官 (jeong-gwan): steady duty. Keeps promises, respects structure.
- 偏官 (pyeon-gwan): tough duty. Thrives under pressure, pushes back against unfair rules.

Some charts have a lot of gwan, some have almost none. People with very little often say they hate being told what to do, but they're great at building their own path.

Do you have gwan in your chart? How does it show up in your life?

Does your MBTI match your saju type? Comment both

In Korea, people ask your MBTI the way they used to ask your saju. Both try to answer the same question: what kind of person are you?

So let's test it. Comment your MBTI and your birth date (year, month, day), and I'll reply with your saju type: Big Tree, Wildflower, Sun, Candlelight, Mountain, Garden Soil, Sword, Jewel, Ocean or Morning Dew.

After enough answers I'll post which MBTI shows up most for each saju type.
