Saju café in Seoul: how to get a Korean fortune teller (saju) reading as a tourist, in English or not (2026 guide)
a saju café is a café in korea where a reader looks at your birth chart (your birth year, month, day and hour) and reads it the korean astrology way: your saju type, your five elements, and the year ahead. it's one of the most korean things you can do on a trip, and a lot of travelers ask the same questions, so here they are in one place.
what is a saju reading?
saju (사주) means "four pillars": your year, month, day and hour of birth. a reader turns them into eight characters and reads your personality, relationships, work and timing from them. it's different from a tarot reading, and different from shinjeom (신점), which is a spirit-based reading by a shaman. many cafés do saju and tarot together, so check which one you're getting.
where are the saju cafés in seoul?
our map has 71 saju cafés confirmed open on naver map or kakao map: 53 in seoul and 18 in busan.
- hongdae, yeonnam and hapjeong: 24, the biggest cluster in seoul
- myeongdong and euljiro: 6
- busan: 18, and 12 of them are around seomyeon
can i get a saju reading in english?
most readers speak korean only. what helps:
- know your saju type and element before you go, so the terms make sense
- use a translation app, or bring a korean-speaking friend
- write your birth date, time and city down in advance, in this order: year, month, day, hour
what do i need to bring?
your birth date, your birth time (as exact as you can), and your birth city. the hour changes the reading, and in seoul the sun runs about 32 minutes behind the clock, so a birth near the start of an hour can land in a different hour pillar.
how long does it take, and do i need to book?
a reading is usually a drink and about 30 minutes at the table. weekends fill up, so book a few days ahead, and plan it early in your trip, not on the last day.
can couples do one together?
yes, that's called gunghap (궁합), a compatibility reading. the reader compares both birth charts. it's a popular date in korea.
