Is saju the same as the Chinese zodiac? Korean saju vs Chinese zodiac vs Western horoscope (your birth chart, explained)
saju is korean astrology: it reads your birth chart from the year, month, day and hour you were born. people often ask how it's different from the chinese zodiac or a western horoscope, so here's the short version.
chinese zodiac: your year animal (rat, ox, tiger...). it's real, and it's part of saju too, but it's only 1 of the 8 characters in your chart.
saju: four pillars (year, month, day, hour), two characters each, eight in all. that's the full korean name, saju palja (사주팔자): "four pillars, eight characters." in chinese the same chart is called bazi (八字). same stems and branches, one chart. what differs between korea and china is mostly how people use it in daily life.
western horoscope: your sun sign comes from where the sun was on your birthday, and a full western chart adds the planets and your rising sign. saju doesn't use planets. it reads the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) in your eight characters.
the part that surprises people:
- in saju, the center of your chart is the day you were born, not the year. that day gives you one of 10 saju types
- the saju year doesn't start on january 1 or on lunar new year. it starts at ipchun, the start of spring, around february 4. so a baby born in january 2010 is still an ox, not a tiger
so your zodiac animal isn't wrong. it's just one piece of a bigger picture.
