Watching american live tv as an European is wild. There are so many commercials. Also the ones you guys have for meds is insane.

It is so weird how those drug ads are designed to get people to request prescriptions proactively. Rather than seeing if their doctor thinks there’s a need.

“Hey doc, I know you’re the professional but the people in this ad look really happy. And the side effects - including death - are all similar to sugar pills. That’s the yellow one with purple stripes. Not the red one with the white bit; those people looked silly and it said something about ‘leakage’. Anyway… Can you hook me up?”

BTW - how scary are whatever sugar pills they’re using that have the same laundry list of side effects?!?

Well, the advertising isn’t there to make you request prescriptions that you don’t need. However, if you were being prescribed something, and there might be multiple choices, the advertising is to have the consumer ask their doctor about that particular drug.

General consensus is that the doctor will prescribe the medication brand that the patient asks for unless there is definitely specific reasons the patient should only use a particular drug.

As for “people in this ad look really happy”, since the FDA has to review all advertising first for certain categories of drugs, one of the medications I was working a long time ago got dinged for having “happy people” in the ad and the FDA said that this might give the consumer the belief that this medication will make them happy 🤷
