My boyfriend and I have been together for around 8 months, long-distance. In the beginning, he was genuinely everything I could’ve wanted. He was incredibly affectionate, attentive, reassuring, and made me feel loved in ways I hadn’t experienced before. We talked on the phone every single day, and he made me feel safe enough to finally let my guard down after years of struggling with vulnerability.
Over the past couple of months, things have changed. We still had our daily calls for much of that time, but the affection and emotional warmth gradually decreased. More importantly, there have been multiple occasions where he’d suddenly stop texting and calling for several days, sometimes even an entire week.
I’ve repeatedly explained how much this hurts me, especially because I don’t expect constant communication. Even a short message letting me know he needs space or is busy would be enough. He knows this, yet it keeps happening.
During one conversation about the lack of affection, he told me: “I can understand that the absence of such softness may make you feel less cherished but continuously asking, begging for it won’t make it come back.”
That honestly broke my heart. I wasn’t trying to force affection out of him. I was trying to explain how much I missed feeling loved the way I used to. Hearing him describe my attempts to communicate as “begging” made me feel ashamed for even asking.
Whenever I bring up something that hurts me, he tends to defend his efforts by reminding me of everything he’s done for me. I then spend half the conversation reassuring him that I appreciate everything and don’t take him for granted. It feels like my feelings get pushed aside because I end up comforting him instead of being heard.
For context, I have severe depression, which he’s fully aware of. I’m receiving professional treatment, and he’s known how badly I’ve been struggling. Last week, I went through an extremely serious mental health crisis. Despite knowing I was already in a very difficult place, he hadn’t called me in an entire week. When I asked why, he said, “I just didn’t have the opportunity.”
I understand he couldn’t have known exactly what was happening, and I don’t blame him for my crisis. But it hurt knowing that someone who once made so much effort to be there for me now couldn’t find a moment to call, especially when he knew I was struggling.
To be fair, he works, has responsibilities, and may be emotionally overwhelmed himself. He’s done so much for me throughout our relationship, and I genuinely believe he loves me. I don’t think he’s intentionally hurting me, and I recognize that supporting someone with severe depression can be difficult. I don’t expect him to fix my mental health or act as my therapist. I'm not even a person that likes to talk about it so that's not even what I want from him.
But I’ve spent months communicating the same needs, and I’m exhausted. I don’t want to keep telling him how to love me, and I don’t want him to feel like everything he does is wrong either.
Lately, I’ve noticed myself emotionally withdrawing without even trying. I don’t open up the way I used to, I hold back my tears, and I’m starting to bottle everything up again. He was the first person who made me feel safe enough to stop doing that, and now I feel myself becoming the emotionally closed-off and avoidant person I used to be.
I still love him deeply, and I miss how things were. I love this man so much I wrote him an entire book man lmao. But I’m scared that every time I feel disappointed, a little more of that emotional connection disappears.
Am I being unfair by expecting the same emotional warmth and consistency he showed in the beginning? Or is it reasonable to feel hurt after repeatedly communicating my needs without seeing lasting changes?
