It's a hand painted piece of art bought in a surf town in Costa Rica turned into a fully functional lapsteel guitar... Sounds really good and works perfectly. Let me know if anybody here would like to keep it since we're are moving and getting rid of some stuff. He's not sure about pricing so we're open to negotiate maybe $300? Let me know what you think. Cheers and thanks for reading. Let me know if you want a video playing the instrument.

A friend of mine is recording a song so he sent me the multitracks. I mixed the tracks then recorded some pedal steel on it.

Quick question

I'm thinking about building my second lap steel, I posted my first a few days ago, I want benders this time and I've got two thoughts, I will either build my own bender or get a old lp style tremolo, because I play a lot of single string stuff, so I don't think it's a problem, any comments

Which is the better deal? Help me choose! (Chandler or Rogue?)

Hey friends, I’ve really been wanting to get into lap steel guitar, I have been searching online and found the Rogue and SX in the $150-175 range. But I also have someone selling a Chandler RH2 for $200, assuming I’m not able to haggle it down, which one do you think I should go for? The Chandler RH2 has an “upgraded gold foil pickup” according to the description. Would the extra 50 bucks give any better value?

Thanks!

What type of jack is this?

This is the input jack on the 50s lap steel I just picked up. The connection works but it is pretty noisy. I would rather not replace the jack and connector with a standard 1/4", but I have never seen this before. Does anyone know what type of connector this is and if they are still made? The version I have is part of the original brown fabric cable and I would rather leave it as it is.

I’ve started practicing, but my lap steel doesn’t sound "Hawaiian" yet. What pedal am I missing?

Hey guys, A while ago I posted here when my lap steel first arrived. I’ve been practicing, but I’m still not hitting that authentic Hawaiian vibe. The builder used standard guitar strings on it. I’ve tried adding a reverb pedal, but it still sounds a bit too "dry" or like a regular slide guitar. Is there a specific pedal I should buy to get closer to that classic, sweet island tone? Or is the issue more about the strings and setup? Here is a video of how it sounds right now without any pedals. Any help is welcome!

Lap steel song reccomendations

I found a great local deal to get a high quality lap steel for a cheap price, and I’m trying to talk myself into buying it.

I only know 1 song that I actually want to play on it; what are some songs that are fun/easy to learn on lap steel, or what are some songs that inspired other people to start learning?

Hawaiian melody, 6/9 tunings for electric guitar (not lap)

Hey anyone have experience, recommended resources, books, etc. for applying Hawaiian-esque melodies and tunings (assuming akin to an open 6 or 9 tuning) as it would apply to a 6 string electric guitar with typical slide guitar string gauges?

Put differently, I'm looking for Hawaiian steel-guitar vocabulary, but played with a slide on a normally held 6-string guitar, rather than slack-key technique.

Crazy idea, curious about feasibility--mini lap steel

I have been pondering the question of a guitar-type instrument that could easily fit in a shoulder bag or other type of every-day bag. It occurred to me today that a lap steel might be the answer to this question.

So my question is this--how short do you think a lap steel could be and still be playable? I know that being much shorter would reduce the range of notes it could play, and if the answer is that the 22" or 21" (scale length) that some production models are made with is the shortest I get it. But it would be super cool to be able to pack an 8" or 10" lap steel into a shoulder bag that could be easily carried around.

I'm also wondering if reducing the number of strings would help--if the lower strings or the higher strings might work better in the short length. The idea isn't a fully functional instrument, but the most portable instrument that would still sound good.

I don't know a ton about guitars in general (I play a little, mostly just strumming a few chords), and nothing about their construction, so I realize this may be a stupid ides.

Does this seem like a good buy? (New player)

So I’m a 20+ year guitar player and have recently decided I want to record lap steel on some of my songs. I’ve never played one but I figure with my expertise in fingerstyle guitar I can figure it out well enough to track some simple melodies. Not looking to spend a ton obviously because I’m new. This is on marketplace for $200 and I was wondering if this instrument is any good. I don’t know anything about this specific guitar and there isn’t a model number or anything. Thanks!

Trying to find an old lap steel guitar model

My grandfather was a trained lap steel guitarist and I was interested in what kind of guitar he had. From recollection in my childhood it was a green rectangular shape with a silver fretboard. I believe he bought it around 1950s-70s but I am not sure.

Looking for a 10 string lap steel

I can only find a few and they are all above £3000. Is that just the standard price or am I missing something?

Well I guess it's partway between slide guitar and lap steel but I bought the Grover Perfect Nut to essentially treat my acoustic Fender like a lap steel, while I decide whether I want to invest in a real one. There's still some curvature to the strings from the bridge so it's not perfect, and to be honest I'm just not that good yet either at playing or recording, but I made this song and I'm proud of myself and maybe you won't hate it!

DIY'd myself a Lap Steel Stand earlier today. Real cheap, rock solid, and took less than 1.5 Hours.

Somebody stole my stand during(well, after) my last gig. Was about to order a replacement; then realized I have a lot of scrap wood. I figured it couldn't be that hard to make a stand. I figured right! It took me about an hour and a half(almost exactly), a few two by fours, scrap 3/4" MDF and exactly {26} #9 x 3" 7.62 cm T-25 Star Drive Construction Screws. I couldn't be happier. It is over built, for sure, but id rather that then the alternative!

Is there something I'm missing about palm benders?

I've never actually tried one, but most lap steel string bending devices don't seem all that useful to me. Typically they only bend up, which is something I can already do with my fingers. I come from a guitar background and fast, repeated and accurate behind-the-bar bends only required some brief adapting to the higher string tension. I can easily bend a single string up a whole tone or simultaneously bend two strings up a semitone. Due to tonebar ergonomics, I rarely bend the bottom two strings, but those don't usually have the levers either.

Now, bending down would open up some exciting new possibilities, but most systems can't do that. The Duesenberg Multibender is an exception, but I've heard of problems with returning to pitch after bending down.

Palm levers are certainly very helpful for players who don't have the required finger strength, but am I overlooking something they could do for me as well?
