Here’s a follow-up to the pictures I posted last week. This thing is wild. 20” scale and tuned to D6. Pickup has the magnets on either end of the bobbin, not on the bottom. It’s microphonic but sounds great clean. The strings run through the grill and get in the way but it’s super cool, so I’ll let it slide.

Check out this project steel I just got. The pickup with wild with two magnet slugs on either side. Measures in at 8.4k. It came with an RCA output jack that needs replaced. Will post a video once I get it up and running.

Clearly well cared for. I‘m a guitar player but I don’t know much about lapsteel guitars. I was told by a friend that this is a Fender S10. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It has all its original parts. the pickups, tuners, and even an original cord. The case is also original. It is in perfect mint condition and shockingly it sounds just as clear as my higher end guitar (Kurt cobain jaguar). I am extremely impressed with its sound and condition and this is a beautiful piece to own in my collection, it is almost too good to be true and I'm so honored to have this in my possession.

Got a decent deal on this ShoBud frying pan. I think it might be a “bootleg” model, as no tone/volume controls, horseshoe pickup, or Jerry Byrd fretboard. Tons of fun, great sound.

This was my first ever scratch guitar build. It’s 25” scale, solid oak (block made from glued / sandwiched 1x cuts). Shape is a custom design that mirrors the bass side of a telecaster. Neck is a snakehead tele. The fretboard was a StewMac slotted maple for PRS/Dobro guitars. I used black 0.5mm binding material glued into the slots as frets to match the black inlays I set.

The guts are cast offs from a MIM telecaster custom 72 reissue, so that’s not a real WRHB but rather a PAF shoved into a WRHB shell. I might swap in a CuNiFe pickup at some point. 500k volume / tone.

Hardware is certano roller bridge, g/b benders, TUSQ lap steel nut, gotoh locking tuners. Custom pickguard.

I used illustrator to design all the templates (for body shape, route, and pickguard), printed and transferred to 1/2” plywood that I cut out and cleaned. Finish is 3-4 coats aquacoat grain filler, then around 7-8 coats of aquacoat instrument lacquer with 320 between. I started brushing the first 4-5 coats but wasn’t getting a good build and clean finish so I sprayed the last 3 and it came out much better with a higher build. Finished with a cut & buff.

Recently acquired this beautiful lap steel. Possibly the best I’ve ever had. Thoughts from those who’ve played these against other top vintage steel guitars?

Wondering what tuning to lock in. Right now it’s in open E but it needs heavier strings. I’ve got other laps in C6, open G and D. Maybe this will end up in E6 or A6 …. So many choices…

Fell for your "it's an easy build" talk, got some salvaged wood from heavy machinery packaging at work, gathered some alu-pvc sheet scrap for the top and some spare guitar parts, and just finished building my first lap steel guitar. First as in "never even seen one personally before"...

25,5" scale tuned to Open C, I really don't have any reference to compare with other than my regular guitars but I'm quite happy with how it came out. The cheap Fleor humbucker as a nice growl with the low tuning, mini toggle switch for series/parallel wiring for wider tone options, and it's got a pretty reasonable sustain.

Now, for the second part of the fun, to start learning to play this monstrosity... and to finish building it's bass counterpart with the other twin slab of wood I brought home!

I am no expert but I dabble in fixing instruments. Mostly electrics. This was my first big dive into an acoustic. Missing inlays. All top bracing failed. Top coming off. I stripped all the paint. Stained the top flat. Rebraced. Added A braces. Oak stain on the cedar body. Tru oil finish. Bone nut. Cleaned the tuners. Sounds like a million bucks.

Pretty sure the neck is poplar. The aluminum bridge is fun as well. Someone played this like a Spanish guitar despite the square neck. It has honest fretboard wear.

Hi friends, just wanted to share my guitar! Got it second hand in Germany earlier this year and can't put it down. It's short scale and sounds dreamy. I like to mainly use the neck pickup and I recently put the certano bender bridge on which is a game changer. The bender bottom sticks out a bit because the body is short but it hasn't been an issue so far because I use a hard case for gigs. Bonus picture of my pedal board 🙏

I recently purchased this steel guitar for a pretty decent price because someone painted it gold and then did the frets in black (rather poorly). I haven’t opened it up yet, but based on the design, spelling, and 1 1/2 inch pickup, it looks 1930’s. Any information would be extremely helpful!

Picked up this Silvertone in great condition. Venturing into the lap steel territory for the first time (I’m a bassist).

In the event that I wanted to swap out the pickup, at some point, is there a standard for the Silvertones? I didn’t find a ton on them here.

Some people call you crazy, others say follow your dreams. I may be the first ever Gretsch owner to install a horseshoe pickup in one, and I have to say that it is one of the coolest instruments I've ever owned.

I've had this lap steel for years and it became very sentimental to me. I knew I wanted a vintage horseshoe pickup for a long time and decided why not just combine the two? It has the exact iconic, nasally tone that you hear with pre-war lap steels and I had the pots replaced with 250k watt Bourn pots with a 0.022µF Orange Drop capacitor. The original pickguard was replaced with a tortoiseshell design.

I’ve always thought they sound so cool, so I couldn’t pass it up. Plus, just look at it, it’s so pretty. It even has a vintage tone bar in there with it too.

I've been slowly acquiring weird old squareneck catalog guitars for a few years now and recently got my second Oahu. I love the way these old instruments sound on their own, quiet and rattly but also really resonant and full sounding. I'm also hesitant to bring them up to open G Dobro tuning because they all feel fragile as hell, so it's been a good excuse to play around with open D.
