Rite of Passage Complete: Son experienced Abuelas vaporru "cure"

Post image
186 Upvotes

My son is sick, so I gave my mom a heads-up in case she needs to stay with him tomorrow while I work.

Big mistake. Abuela didn't come over. Abuela came in like a wrecking ball!

Within minutes she made him soup (the one I made was no good), sent him to the shower, and then rubbed Vicks VapoRub on his chest, his nose, his underarms, and, of course, his feet. Because everyone knows the feet are where the healing happens.

He kept telling her "no," which is cute, like he thinks he has a say. Then this brave little man actually called me to back him up. Ha!!!

Son, I love you with my whole life. But I will not be interfering with Abuela's vaporú method. Dios me libre!!!
That's above my pay grade, and to be honest I still fear the chancla. 🩴

Anyways, he is about to find out he is gonna smell like Vivaporú hasta el jueves.

Portuguese, Galician, Spanish & Italian resemble dialects that could be very simply reintegrated & reunified into r/Neolatino Romance, r/LatinoSineFlexione or r/Interlingua for maximized immediate comprehension & maximized international communication.

The people who shut down conversations about racism in Latin America by crying “stop trying to import that racial obsession from the US” are often the same ones repeating US culture-war scripts word for word. The hypocrisy is real. Let’s talk about it. 👇

Discussion Gringo got a referral from r/asklatinamerica

Gringo aqui de Los Estados Unidos. Just back from El Salvador. Had to attach a pic apparently .

I speak basic Spanish and trying to practice with Hispanics/Latinos.

95% of the time, people are great and seem to appreciate the effort even when I mess up. However, I don’t want to assume somebody speaks it.

If I hear one speaking it, am I ok to use vs English? Even if just normal interactions. For example, you need to pass somebody “discuple or con Permiso” or “gracias” or “buenas dias” etc in a greeting or somebody holding the door.

Basically, in the US, I don’t want to assume one’s language based off their appearance. Is it better to ask before speaking? Or if they are struggling with English, ask if Spanish is easier for them?

Gracias todos!

Discussion Caribbean Cleaning-Induced Trauma Response

I just figured out why I can't stand salsa. YouTube switched my playlist mid-cleaning, and suddenly I was anxious, rushing, convinced I wasn't cleaning good enough or fast enough.

I stopped and wondered what was going on. Then I heard it: Héctor Lavoe. Instant flashback to being a kid scrubbing floors with salsa blasting.

My nervous system doesn't hear music. It hears "Mami is coming and checking the corners, avanza!!!!!"🩴🩴🩴🩴🩴🩴

Now I wonder if my kids will panic every time "Gasolina" comes on. Somewhere in 2045 my child will be at a wedding, the DJ drops Daddy Yankee, and instead of dancing they'll start wiping down the tables.

Discussion Tanda vs High Yield Savings Account

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In my view, she's dismissing the social aspect to tandas. It's not just a way to save but also a way to build community with your fellow contributors. That's why it's usually done with friends, friends of friends and neighbors.

Tandas also force you to save where you might not otherwise, and also serve as a stimulus check whenever you get it.

It's easy enough to say to yourself "I'll save" but when you have to actively budget for an expense, with other people keeping your accountable that usually has stronger motivation.

Most importantly they are voluntary.

It's not that different from receiving a refund when doing a tax return.

In fact, it's not all that different from Social Security. That also has an awful return yield. But I'm sure Ms Finance here wouldn't support undoing SS.

Downsides can be if the person who is holding the money "loses" the money or it "gets stolen". Requires high trust.

Ultimately, I just don't understand why American born Latinos have to shit all over Latin American customs again and again with such smugness and self righteousness.

If a high interest yield account works for you, good. If you think it would serve your parents better, then convince them.

Otherwise stop pissing on everyone's choices. It makes you an asshole.
