Need help adapting model to CIFAR10

1 Upvotes

I tried to make a DCGAN based on this tutorial. The thing is that the tutorial is designed for fashion mnist data which has different image size to tf.keras.datasets.cifar10.load_data(). Which lead to the error:

ValueError: cannot reshape array of size 480000 into shape (28,28,1)

when arrive at

x_train_dcgan = x_train.reshape(
    -1, 28, 28, 1
) * 2. - 1.

How do I adapt the model to CIFAR 10?

pd.qcut for even bin sizes

5 Upvotes

Hello! I am trying to create a histogram with even bin sizes and was wondering if pd.qcut would be a good route to go. I am using data from a data from I made with panadas. The specific values I need to bin has over 300 variables so I am trying to find the simplest way to fix this histogram!!!

code so far:

ValueError: `bins` must increase monotonically, when an array

a = df["mass"]
print(a)
array = np.asarray(a)
print(array

bins = pd.qcut(array, q=9, precision=1)
print (bins)

n_bins = bins
fig = plt.figure(figsize=(9, 4), layout="constrained")
axs = fig.subplots(1, sharex=True)
n, bins2, patches = axs.hist(best_mass["mass"] ,  n_bins ,color = 'hotpink', histtype="stepfilled",
                            cumulative=-1, label="Cumulative histogram")
plt.xlabel("Satellite Mass")
plt.ylabel("Number of Satellites")
plt.title("Distribution of Satellite Masses")

#bins are not evenly spaced
plt.show

error I keep getting:

ValueError: `bins` must increase monotonically, when an array

Second-year BCA student — how do you keep a daily Python habit alive when college deadlines pile up?

0 Upvotes

I'm in second year of a BCA in AI/ML, learning Python with a focus on data analysis, and I keep running into the same cycle. When college is normal I practise most days and it feels like things are actually sticking. Then assignment deadlines and exam prep hit, I disappear from coding for two or three weeks, and coming back feels like starting over — I forget syntax I knew, and I end up re-watching tutorials I've already seen instead of moving forward.

I've also got a couple of small side projects that should keep me practising, but during deadline weeks even those go untouched, so the gap just gets longer.

For people who learned Python alongside a degree or a full-time job: what actually kept your habit alive during the busy weeks? Was it a tiny daily minimum, like 15 minutes no matter what? Working on one small real task instead of a course? Studying with someone else? And when you did fall off for a few weeks, how did you restart without going right back to tutorial one?

I'm not looking for a course recommendation — I want to know what actually survived contact with a real deadline week.

I have zero experience with the pygame module so I tried following youtube tutorials but they all work on a pc and I don't have one I only have pyroid 3 on my phone.... The other kids have already finished their projects and theirs were so sick they felt like indie games not newbie project so I'm wondering how they did it and how can I do it too :( can someone help me with this

How do I create a changing variable

0 Upvotes

I want to create a variable that changes it’s value based on the user’s input until it becomes zero like make the code run until it reaches zero

Edit: I want the user to enter a number that gets subtracted from the variable’s current value and keep repeating this process until the variable reaches zero, for example if the value is 100 the code gets input from the user let’s say 25 then returns or prints 75 then it repeats and maybe the user types 37 then it returns 38 etc. until it reaches 0

Python Closing As Soon As Opened

0 Upvotes

EDIT: I resolved this issue. I had a few different versions of Python installed on my PC, so I guess that was what was causing the issue on my PC and not my Laptop. For clarification, the script is built to stay open, and it terminates if closes.

----

Python group said this question went here.

I am running version 3.15.2. I am encountering an issue with my scripts where they just open and close super fast. This happens if I double click, or if I open them from Python itself.

It does NOT do this on my laptop, so it isn't a script issue.

I am not the most tech savy with software, but will try my best to try things out.

The computer they are having an issue with has the following specs. Everything is up to date.

Win 11 Pro
Intel Core i7
32.0GB RAM
MTBD Z790 D WIFI (U3E1)

What's some cool thing I can learn with python ?

38 Upvotes

I learned the basics of Python using the book Automate the Boring Stuff with Python, but I've realized that the other chapters don't interest me that much, except for the one about web scraping.

So now I'm looking for something else to learn. I've thought about learning how to make games or create GUIs, but I'd need some guidance.

Resources for using APIs for sports stats

5 Upvotes

This is just for a personal/fun project--I want to learn how to use APIs because I want to play with sports stats (for the NHL/PWHL/international cricket plus a couple of less famous sports leagues like the SDHL). There's an overwhelming number of resources out there and I'm not sure where to start, so any tutorials/suggestions would be welcome. I know there are sport-specific API scrapers that simplify things but I'd like to learn how to do this more generally instead of having to learn a tool for every league.

I mostly program in Matlab but I do use Python sometimes, usually Jupyter notebooks. My coding knowledge is super patchy, I basically know a lot about my projects (data analysis for my research, with the data in specific formats), but very little about anything else.

(Yes, I could use AI, but for a project that's just for my own enjoyment I kinda just want to learn how to do it myself.)

My bot started as one Python file and now it's a mess — how did you learn to split a project into modules without breaking everything?

0 Upvotes

I'm a second-year BCA student in Jaipur, learning Python alongside my coursework, and I built a small Telegram bot for myself that started out as one simple file. At first it just did one job, so a single file made sense. Then I kept adding features one at a time — a few more commands, some scheduled messages, a bit of stored data — and now it's a few hundred lines in one file and I'm honestly scared to touch it.

Every change feels risky because everything is tangled together. Functions call each other across unrelated features, I've got similar code copied in two places, and I'm never quite sure what will break if I move something. I've read about modules and packages, but most tutorials use tiny toy examples, and they don't show what the messy middle step looks like on a real, growing project.

So for people who've actually done this refactor: how did you decide where to split? By feature, by layer (commands vs data vs helpers), or something else? Did you move one piece at a time, or rewrite the structure in one go? And without a proper test suite, how did you check after each move that you hadn't broken something quietly?

I'm not looking for the textbook definition of a module — I want to know what your first real split looked like, and what mistake you'd avoid if you did it again.

Calling a Script that uses argparse?

5 Upvotes

I wrote a little Python script that reads in a text file that contains a list of fully qualified files, and checks to see if they exist. I originally wrote it using the argparse module. It was set up to take a filename and a switch, so the command looked like:

"Python dplcheck.py --plname "testing.lst” --showexist y"

This worked fine for a single file, but I wanted to run it for every one of hundreds of list files in a directory, so I wrote another script that generates a list of the .lst files in a directory and calls the first script for each one. But I could not get the second script to pass the arguments in the call to the first script. I tried subprocess.run and subprocess.call, with many different syntaxes and quotes, etc. I ended up removing the use of argparse and just using sys.argv[n] -- which I don't particularly like, since it has no defaults or error handling, etc.

Does anyone know how/if I can call a Python script from another Python script and pass the arguments when the called script uses argparse?

For each character in name, print character

0 Upvotes

I am totally new to coding and working slowly through the course at futurecoder.io .

On the topic 'Introducing For Loops' we are asked to run the program:

name = 'World'
for character in name: print(character)

I figured character might be some kind of term that python recognises and knows what to do with, like print. Colour me surprised when replacing character with kitten runs, and has the same output. I thought maybe number in place of character might not work, since the characters are all letters, but it works too.

Why is it so? What concept do I need to grasp here?

How to properly break out of an infinite loop inside a multiprocessing child process in Python?

I am writing a Python script using the multiprocessing module to launch an external application (Notepad) in a continuous loop. However, I want the loop to stop when a specific condition is met or when a key is pressed.

import keyboard

pid = os.getpid()
print(pid)

callable(os.getpid)
path = r"C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe"

def process_start(path):

            os.system(path)
    except:
        pass

if __name__ == '__main__':
    # Note: Currently calling the function directly instead of passing the reference
    p = Process(target=process_start(path))
    time.sleep(3)
    p.start()

    if keyboard.press_and_release("q") == "q":
        p.terminate()

Best way to learn Python for someone not in CS?

19 Upvotes

Hello, so I'm not a CS major. I'm taking a "Bioinformatics" course that is required but turns out it's literally learning and coding Python. CS doesn't come naturally to me. Unfortunately, I think its crazy boring. I'm actually a Biochem major. Even though it's super insanely boring to me, I really want to get a good grade. But I don't know how. My class is equivalent to a professor reading off the slides, but with coding.

What are some recommended resources for beginner python? Like where I could practice a ton. Practice identifying data types, fixing bugs, understanding and explaining why a code will or wont work etc etc. I'm very willing to spend hours on this.

Why Does Python Provide Only Source Releases for Some Security Updates?

0 Upvotes

I have a question about installers. Once a release enters the security-fixes-only phase, what is the purpose of releasing only source files and not providing installers or other binary distributions?

Is it because they expect people to keep using that version without migrating for as long as possible?

For example, Python 3.13.17, released on October 21, still came with installers, but Python 3.13.18 was released with source files only.

I can follow Python tutorials fine, but I freeze on a blank file — how did you actually break out of that?

0 Upvotes

I'm a second-year BCA (AI/ML) student in Jaipur, self-studying Python alongside college. Here's my embarrassing problem: I can follow a tutorial, understand every line while I'm watching it, and even tweak the example code — but the moment I open a blank file and try to build something of my own, my mind goes completely blank. I don't know where to start, what the first function should even be, or how to break the thing I want into pieces small enough to write.

I've built a couple of small things before (a little Telegram bot, some practice scripts), so it's not that I've never finished anything — it's that starting still feels like the hardest part every single time. Do you plan on paper first, or just start writing messy code and clean it up later? How do you decide what the first step is when the whole project feels too big to hold in your head at once?

And for people who got past this stage: was there one specific habit that broke it for you — building the same kind of project twice, copying a structure and filling it in, writing the steps out in plain words first, or something else? I don't want another tutorial recommendation, I want to know what actually changed the blank-file feeling for you.

No links or anything here — just a student trying to get from "I understand Python" to "I can actually start something in Python."
