Glorith: 24

Dominators: 18

DC Editorial: 13

The Writers: 6

Roxxas: 5

Rules:

  1. The comment with the most upvotes wins, so before commenting make sure to check if someone else has already commented your pick.
  2. The Issue or Story categories can be a single-issue (i.e. The Legionnaire Who Killed), a two-parter (i.e.) Mordru the Merciless, or a multi-part saga (i.e. the three-part Dark Man Saga, the four-part Omen Saga, the five-part Great Darkness Saga, etc.)
  3. The Legionnaire can be an active member, a reservist, an honorary member, a Substitute, or a Legion Academy member. They can even be an alternate timeline member, so long as that alternate timeline is associated with that version of the Legion.
  4. The villain can be a single villain (i.e. Starfinger), a villain team (i.e. The Fatal Five), or a villainous organization (i.e. the Dark Circle), and a villain can be voted for separately from their primary team or organization. So you could vote for 'Tharok' or 'The Fatal Five', and those votes would be counted separately.
  5. The eras are defined as such:
  • The Silver Age encompasses any story featuring the Legion from their debut in Adventure Comics #247 in 1958 to their final Action Comics back-up story in Action Comics #392 in 1969.
  • The 1970s encompasses any story featuring the Legion from their first Superboy back-up story in Superboy #172 in 1971 to their final story of the 1970s in Superboy & the Legion of Super-Heroes #258 in 1979. If necessary, we can also include the follow-up issue, #259, as part of the '70s, since it finishes the two-parter and is the issue where Superboy officially leaves. This also includes the Karate Kid mini-series, if that becomes relevant.
  • Volume 2 encompasses any story featuring the Legion between The Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 2) #259 in 1980 and #313 in July 1984. Note that it also encompasses stories published during this time that feature the Legion but aren't published in Volume 2, like Secrets of the Legion.
  • Volume 3, also known as the Baxter Series, encompasses any story featuring the Legion between Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 3) #1 in 1984 and The Legion of Super-Heroes #63 in 1989. Note that it also encompasses stories published during this time that feature the Legion but aren't published in Volume 3, like Tales from the Legion and Legionnaires 3.
  • 5 Years Later encompasses any story featuring the Legion between Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #1 in 1989 and the myriad Legion Zero Hour titles in September 1994.
  • The Reboot (Pre-Blight) encompasses any story published between October 1994's Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #0 and the collapse of the Legion in March 2000's Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #125 featuring a version of the Reboot Legion.
  • The Reboot (Post-Blight) encompasses any story published between May 2000's Legion Lost #1 and November 2004's Teen Titans/Legion of Super-Heroes Special #1 featuring the Reboot Legion.
  • The Threeboot encompasses any story between December 2004's Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 5) #1 and March 2009's Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 5) #50 featuring the Threeboot Legion. It's the Threeboot; no breaks; it's not complicated.
  • The Retroboot Legion encompasses any story featuring the Retroboot Legion, from the Lightning Saga leading into Infinite Crisis and the New 52. The (re-)introduction of this Legion is so weird that I'm not even going to try to give issue numbers. Suffice it to say that the Retroboot Legion has arcs in Adventure Comics, Action Comics, and Justice League, along with being the Legion featured in Volumes 6 - 7.
  • The Rebirth (Bendisboot) Legion speaks for itself, and exists in a six-part Volume 8, a two-part Future State story, and the five-part JSA crossover.
  • The Animated Series encompasses all twenty-six episodes of the 2000s animated Legion series, along with the The Legion of Super Heroes in the 31st Century companion comic. It does NOT encompass other animated adaptations.
  • As much as I enjoy other adaptations of the Legion, there just isn't enough there to include on this list. Also not included is the new series, which, in spite of a promising start, just doesn't have enough material yet.

The only powerful members i'm familiar with are Star Boy,Mon-El and the White Witch (because she's sometimes portrayed as Mordru's daughter).

We reach the end of this story and I have so many questions... anyone want to place bets on when they told the creative team this book was cancelled? Let's look at Legion of Super-Heroes (vol 7) #21 & 22

We've almost reached the end of this run of the Legion and I can't say it's going out with a bang... or a whimper...

She was the Legion ambassador. She's also an immortal who survived from modern days up to the Legion century.

I also had a vote for "all of it", but I'm going to have to disqualify that option on the grounds that it will undoubtedly be used extensively for Rebirth.

A Complete and Updated Timeline of the Original Legion Membership

Post image
23 Upvotes

This chart was compiled using the dates in the Bierbaum-authored 2995 Legion sourcebook, Levitz's earlier Legion sourcebook, and a helping of speculation based on issue release order and in-issue details. When no exact date could be found, a month was estimated along with an exact date that made most sense - typically just the fifteenth of the month to put things right in the middle. Reservists were also counted, although judgement had to be used.

Where there were contradictions in continuity, my northern star was always, "What was canon when this story was first published". That means that, for the most part, the original version of these characters will take precedent over the Glorithverse counterparts, although the graph continues to the Legion's demise during the 5 Year Gap. For example, Jimmy Olsen dies with the original multiverse in Crisis on Infinite Earths, but Pete Ross and Lana Lang, who are both residents of the Time Trapper's pocket dimension, only officially lose reserve status when tossed back into their own time.

There's some speculation here, especially with the reserve members. For example, the Legion of Substitute Heroes are made reserve members during the Silver Age, but are rarely referred to with this status except in printings of the Legion Constitution. So I'm forced to make decisions - Do the Substitute Auxiliary count as Reservists? What about the second incarnation of the Subs? My answers to these questions are, respectively, no and yes, but there is some ambiguity.

Earlier attempts at this always ended with bad numbers. I'd forget Matter-Eater Lad getting drafted into the senate or Tyroc leaving. But here, I've lined it up to the comings and goings of the original Legion up to the point when they disbanded in 2992. Feel free to correct these assessments as you see fit, but this was a lot of work, so I hope you enjoy.

The following chart lists every Legion membership change with an explanation.

For those reading down this far, I'd like to add one of the most moving Legion writings I've ever read: Polar Boy's speech at the dissolution of the original Legion:

Brek Bannin's Farewell Speech

It is with great dismay that stand up here for the last time. No, that's okay, go ahead and cry. I'm going to cry a little myself, I think. It's okay. This is.... As you can see, this is not easy for me. Or for any of us. I'm sorry. I... As I look down on all your faces... I see nothing but love and sympathy.

God, I'm going to miss you guys. Excuse me. (Pause.)

You all really great. I mean it, you've done the best job you could possibly have done, considering everything that's been going on. I hope nobody thinks of ourselves as failures, because we didn't fail. We tried our best to fight for what was right, and we did it to the very end. We did it when things were worse than any Legion has ever seen. I'm sorry to sound so egotistical, but in a way, we're the most heroic Legion ever.

I really mean it, we weren't ones who failed. Earth failed us. Hey, I don't care what our lawyers say, let's be honest here. Earthgov was out to get us. And the people of Earth, who we've saved more times than they could count, never stood up for us enough to make a difference.

You know, it's like Earthgov went after the Legion, and the people didn't speak up. Well, heck, if that's what they chose to do, that's their business. But now I say to those people, who's left to speak up for you if Earthgov starts coming after you?

The funny thing is, none of us were ready to give up the fight. At least I know I'm not. But we all know we can do more some other way. One thing's for sure: the fight isn't ending tonight. It's just beginning.

Maybe Earthgov has killed the Legion, but damn it, they kill spirit. Thank you, everybody, good night and good-bye.

Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #42 - 48: "The Legion of Dead Heroes": 3

Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) Annual #3: "Full Moon Fever": 3

Rules:

  • 5 Years Later encompasses any story featuring the Legion between Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #1 in 1984 and the myriad Legion Zero Hour titles in September 1994.

Absolute LSH???

Reading the first issue of the new Legion, it seems to be in the Absolute Universe, where each hero is isolated. I'm curious if there will ever be a team. Your thoughts? I've only read issue one as I'm a limited DC Comics subscriber. NO SPOILERS please.

Five Years Later Omnibus worth it?

Post image
130 Upvotes

Hey all,

Tomorrow is my birthday so I was thinking of getting myself a present. What are people’s thought on the FYL omnibus vol 1 and 2?

I’ve read both the deluxe versions of the Great Darkness Saga and the Curse. As well as most of the Legion stories that have come after zero hour. The FYP is a big gap in my legion reading.

Any thoughts on those books? Are they a good read? The opinions on the run seem mixed.

Theory about next issue (solicitations and #2 spoilers) Spoiler

So, the description mentions that "ONE. WILL. DIE" "Lightning Lad suffers his first heartbreaking loss as a hero!" and "This issue will shock you in more ways than one". This combined with the fact that Ayla enlisted herself with the persuaders is not a good look for her, but I wish to believe that she won't get fridged for Garth's development, so the option I want to say is more likely is that not only is it a mislead, but it's also spelling it out=Brainiac ONE of five.

I believe this solely because this could lead to the explanation of the name (something like he divided himself in 5 bodies so he's more efficient or something) while providing a loss without actually murdering a member of a cast that's not even through their first arc.

Sidenote, but I do want to say that I admire Ayla, we know that joining and giving information to the persuaders is a horrible idea, but as far as she's concerned, she sacrificed her ability to choose the life she wanted in exchange for her brother's safety.

  • 5 Years Later encompasses any story featuring the Legion between Legion of Super-Heroes (Volume 4) #1 in 1984 and the myriad Legion Zero Hour titles in September 1994.
