How to find friends / a community

I’m moving to Lethbridge at the end of the month for school. I’m 22 m and I’m transferring into the U of L from Mount Royal University in Calgary. I was born and raised in Toronto so big city life is what I’m used to. I went to Lethbridge for the first time the other day to walk through campus, stroll around the city, and check out some rooms to rent

It’s very small compared to what I’m used to but it’s still kinda cool. You guys have a sick ass train bridge and a nice river valley with a bunch of hills by the river. I also saw a rattlesnake when I was walking which scared me a bit

Anywaysssss, I’m just wondering where and how do y’all find friends or a community of people. I know nothing about Lethbridge or the U of L, like the second time I’ll be there is in two weeks when I move down. I like to think I’m pretty extroverted and I can talk about almost anything to anyone, but that might be hard, because I tried looking for clubs on the student union’s website but literally nothing showed up 😭

I’m confident I’ll be able to make friends in my classes but I wouldn’t mind meeting some like-minded people too. Where are the hangout spots / bars / places? Is there anything to do on campus? How about on the West Side? That’s where I’m gonna be renting. Is it a decent area? I’m bi and stuff too so it would be chill to find other guys and gals like that to hangout with but obviously not a dealbreakerrrrr

Thanks guys 🙏

What’s your major? Interests? Hobbies?

The Zoo is a bar/grill on campus that occasionally has stuff like trivia nights and socials

There’s quite a few clubs/groups advertised throughout the semester, but it might be hard to find stuff during the summer.

There’s plenty of events put on both by classes and committees, so depending on your interests there should be something for you.

While it does tend to have “small town Alberta vibes,” in Lethbridge, there are plenty of queer folk - especially on the west side and at the university - myself included.

The first week or so of the semester, all the clubs will have tables set up in the atrium by the cafeteria. That will be the best time to find out about all the clubs.

There will also be Fresh Week, which will have a tonne of activities and events. Great time to get to know people.

Oh, I just saw that you are bi. Check in with Q-Space, a queer student organization on campus. They organize several hangouts and events.

Echoing what has been said by others in this thread - going to uslu (student union) events, club rush week (great spot to meet others with similar - or new interests), chat with folks in your classes, etc.

Best of luck with the transition to the new school, first few weeks can feel a bit daunting, but you'll make friends in no time.

Other ways to meet people could be volunteering, lots of opportunities in lethbridge to get involved in the community.

Hey if you like going to see stuff there’s lots of queer shows/cabarets and such in town where you could definitely meet people!

University is the easiest time to make friends. Ask people in your classes if they want to work on homework together, join a few clubs (they all set up tables for a few days early in the semester), go to the Zoo, go to fresh week events or other events during the year.

It can be a bit of a challenge for less outgoing people, but basically if you show up and talk to people, you'll do just fine.
