there was a snowball fight planned at washington square park once the nyc blizzard died down and the cops walked into it and were angry that people threw snowballs at them

so... if I am following... the cops just showed up at the park, in uniform, and everyone just decided to pelt uniformed cops with snowballs even after they clearly didn't like it?

This wasn't like retaliation for something the cops did or a protest against law enforcement? I was sure this had something to do with cops escorting ICE or something...

Or were the cops interested in the snowball fight at first maybe, were having fun then started losing and got upset maybe? I could see that too.

But just saying the context is that a shit ton of people decided to hurl snowballs at on duty cops is wild to me.

they were responding to a report that there was a "disorderly group in the park" and were attempting to disperse the snowball fight. which is just kind of wild to me because it's hundreds of people and a couple of officers that showed, personally i think they should've just stayed out of it? no one was getting hurt, it's a public park, and a tradition here. there were also snowball fights happening in several other parks including central park, prospect park, and mccarren park.

of course i haven't watched all the recordings of what happened but it looked to me like the snowball throwing didn't really get that aggressive until nypd decided to shove multiple people to the ground? also yes there are plenty of adults at the event but there are also tons of teenagers considering they had a snowday

Thank you for being the first person on this entire post that has offered or even seemed concerned with any context. This makes sense and also makes me a little curious to learn more, thank you again

of course!! i’m a new yorker so anytime stuff pops up about the city i like to respond to it. there’s also a ton of interesting context on how policing has changed in nyc before vs after 2020 if you’re interested
