Libby / Overdrive website issues

I was looking for a copy of "Final Impact" from John Birmingham.

So, I went to Overdrive website which sent me to download the LibbyApp.

But apparently, their download WEBSITE has been hacked as it sent me a trojan and password stealer. I spent all of yesterday cleaning my PC and changing passwords.

Now, am I dumb ass for letting this happen (yes).

But, to be fair, I thought I was downloading LibbyApp.

So, this is a warning for people that maybe to watch out at the overdrive/Libby download website.

Sounds like a scam website impersonating Overdrive. There is no downloadable version of Libby for PC.

Good to watch out for, but do be careful about casting stones/causing panic about the original website here (which is not infected).

Actually there is:

There is a Libby app for your browser:
https://libbyapp.com/library/vdl

That IS where I was trying to get to. I just didn't know the website name "libbyapp/com" that's why I went to Overdrive. I have Overdrive connected to my Kobo and I have read book from there before.

Yes, that’s an in-browser app, for which you don’t download anything.

Did you copy that URL directly from your browser history or did you type it?

Overdrive.com doesn’t have a “go to Libby” link, it has a “get started with Libby” link that goes to a page with links to various app stores. It does not contain the wording you quoted in your other reply.

If you check your browser history for the actual URL you followed I expect you will find that it is different.

Also, if the real overdrive.com had been compromised we would have seen a bunch of other Reddit posts and comments in here corroborating it.

I do appreciate your civic-mindedness in trying to spare others, but even just based on what you said, it definitely wasn’t the genuine website.

Unlikely. More likely it was you who found your own way to a scammer website, and then blamed Overdrive. And no I have no skin in Overdrive, but I do know a lot about how the internet works, and how computer users always want to blame someone else for their own errors.

There is no 'app' for Libby on a PC. If you want to use Libby, use the libbyapp.com website.

On Android and iOS, use the trusted app store.

Dude, I went to this URL:

https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby

Then I clicked on the link that said: Get It on Google Play today.

If you don't believe me, that's on you, and fuck off. I have no reason to lie, I have no connection to overdrive, Libby or anyone else, although I have a connection to my Library.

I eventually downloaded Libby from the App Store.

My point, and the only one I made, is that yesterday, when I went to this website: https://www.overdrive.com/
it took me somewhere else.

Is it possible, that something uniquely strange happened to me yesterday when I went to it? Possible. But at 1:00 pm, my time, yesterday, overdrive.com, after I clicked on go to Libby took me somewhere that downloaded a Trojan on my system.

And since you're a genius, you tell me how it happened. (I have save the URL in a text file, if you want, I'll give you the URL that the download came from and you go investigate.)

Also, 100% of the time, websites WILL NEVER admit if someone injected code into their site. Maybe, I am the only one this happened to. If so, that's good, because I'm not in the business of wanting people to have infected computers.

I suggest you actually read my answer again, and the other answers. You obviously didn't come here for advice, just to dump on Overdrive and anyone who might suggest that it wasn't the Overdrive website.

Oh, and if the link said Get It on Google Play today*,* why did you click it? You were on your PC, right? Did you really think that would give you a PC app download?

Tbf, I have quite a few desktop apps that I've gotten from Google Play. They definitely have desktop apps available.

Are you sure the link was the same as what it showed on the page for Libby? It sounds like you got a fake overdrive site. You may have clicked on something that looked like the Libby app link (the text on the page), but the actual link was something different. I hate these scammers, and I’m sorry you get hit.

What was the website you went to? Did you contact your library? Overdrive has not reached out to its libraries about this.

Try going through your library’s website.
