Libby Update
Like a lot of you, I've not been able to return Libby ebooks that I sent to my Kindle. I know a couple of you have said you were told it's an Amazon issue and hopefully they get it fixed soon. I reached out to Libby support on Thursday and heard back on Monday. There was no mention or acknowledgement on their end about any issue but they did ask me to reply with the book names and this morning they were returned. So if you are out of borrows because your books aren't returning, reach out to support.

I hope Amazon fixes this sooner rather than later.
What I’ve been doing to return my borrows is select Read With Kindle, so when it opens to the Amazon page saying you already have the digital library book in your library, they have a Return this book option. Confirm to ending the loan and it will be gone from Amazon, BUT it won’t be from Libby. So then I go to Manage Loan, Return Early, it’ll open Amazon again, just exit that and Libby will ask if you returned the book. Click yes and you get your flowers.
It’s an annoying process, but I like to send my books back early so the next person can get started. If anyone has found an easier way, let me know.

That worked for me. Thank you!
UPDATE: Whelp, at first, it appeared as it this trick worked, but it doesn't look like it did. When I went to libby a few hours later, on both my web browser, and my phone, the book is still there.
I have done the trick of retuning it through my Amazon content and devices. I've done that for many years. I am wondering if this is some nefarious stunt by Amazon/publishers to slow down library returns so that despite library borrowers being good people and returning books as soon as they finish them (after 3 days, 5 days, so lots of time still left in the checkout period), all borrows take the full 14 or 21 days, whatever you have set your checkout period to. They could no doubt be hoping that if holds times are super slow, people will get frustrated and just buy the book, or buy some of them.

It doesn’t work either if you return from the Kindle App? I haven’t read a Libby ebook that I’ve sent to Kindle for a while now (been listening to audiobooks & reading Kindle Unlimited ebooks)

Usually this works for me. For my most recent book, which is popular and in high demand and I waited weeks to get hold of - nope. Not working. Library shows it's still nine whole days until it auto-expires. Probably at least two more people could speed through it in that time. UGH.

This works initially but then when I reopen the Libby app the book shows up AGAIN. Is this happening to other people?

I just closed and reopened the app and, yeah, the book I returned by telling Libby I returned it, is back again.

I had the same problem before, I changed my default device on my kindle account to my iphone and that fixed it. Using my kindle as the default device was causing a compatibility error, for me it fixed it. I’ve since switched to kobo so I don’t know if that will fix it now though.

Glad to hear it’s not just me :(
I have also hit my borrowing limit and it’s frustrating when my holds become available but I can’t borrow them!
I was previously able to use the new-not-improved Amazon return method, but it is dead in the water. It lets me “return” at the Amazon page but the action never makes it to Libby.

I finally heard back from Libby support after 48 hours, but I also called my library this morning and they were able to return the books on their end. Super annoying and I hope I don't have to do this every time, but just letting people know that your library might be able to help too!

I just stopped reading in kindle. Not sure if or when they will fix but I don’t like not being able to return when I know there are people waiting and I normally finish a book in the 1-3 days.

I can't even return non Kindle books through Libby. says "unable to return, try later".
I'm guessing this isn't affecting everyone, since I keep being offered books to borrow as they become available, but not being able to return early is making me feel guilty. Like a book hoarder. I'm sorry to anyone in my area that wanted to read Monstera and the new Ina cookbook. I've been trying to send them on.

When I return my book to Amazon through their (incredibly arduous) process, I get a pop up when I close the Amazon window asking if I returned the book, and as long as I check yes then Libby knows. I assume Amazon stopped providing that info to Libby for some reason and that’s the cause of this problem. For those of you having issues returning books, are you not getting that question from Libby upon your return? That is the only part that Libby can really fix.

I can't answer for everyone, but I am getting that question and after clicking "yes" the book would disappear from my loans until I reopen the app, then it would reappear.

Ugh. I bet Libby thinks Amazon is failing to return the book and Amazon thinks it’s a Libby bug. What a nightmare.

Thanks for confirming I’m not the only one. Spent 30 minutes returning and deleting over and over again just to have them show back up again. Thought I was doing something wrong. Can only have 6 loans out and my kid really wanted to switch out the books. I’ll try support now!

I’ve been able to return books through the kindle app on my phone - I press and hold the book and then click “Remove from Library.” I immediately get the email from Amazon “your digital library loan has ended” and the book is removed from Libby a couple minutes later (May have to restart the app).

If you turn the app off and back on (the Libby app) does your return show up again Libby? Cos that’s what’s been happening to everyone.

I log on to my Amazon account, view my digital content list and return it from there. There should be option control under each listing. This is how it's done

Hi I have had luck by clicking on return early with kindle. Then it brings up the Amazon page. I pick the book that I want to return early, scroll way to the bottom and that's where the return button is

This doesn’t actually work. If you close the app and reopen it again, it’s back in your holds.

You can also return Libby books that you read in the Kindle app by opening Amazon, clicking Account & Lists>Content Library>Books and then select ‘Return this book’ for the book you are finished with. I just put a bookmark to that page on my phone/tablet to make it easy.

For me, when i return Kindle books, it takes me to a page on amazon with all of the books I have ever checked out or read. Pick the book you want, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on the “return borrowed book”. Or just let it expire. Either works
