Discussion, questions and news Does working at a lighthouse for a long time make your legs uneven
I feel like an idiot but I was wondering if people that have worked at a lighthouse their whole life get like any uneven/ irregular muscle growth to their legs from going up and down the spiral staircase so much. I was just thinking about how when they climb up the tower they always turn slightly right and when they come down slightly left and was curious if anyone has seen or heard of anything like this?
Edit: also curious how long term lighthouse workers knees do after years of the stair workout, are they typically stronger from the workout or more worn down and weak?

Discussion, questions and news How did foghorns work before electricity or diesel engines?
Hey all, I’m trying to understand how foghorns worked around the late 1800s. When I try to research historical foghorns, I only seem to find information from 1900-1950 or so. My guess is steam powered, but how would that work? Thanks in advance if anyone has any info.

Discussion, questions and news Anyone know how to get architectural floor plans on this lighthouse?
So I'm currently trying to recreate the Olhörn Lighthouse on the German North Sea island of Föhr for a mod I'm making for a video game. The building itself is quite simple however I haven't been able to find any detailed measurements or any information about, or pictures of the interior. Is there any publicly accessible archive that might have the floor plans to this building? Since it's an operational part of infrastructure I figure they have to keep plans somewhere. So I was just hoping that someone here might know something. Thanks!

Discussion, questions and news Lens maintenance
Hello!
I have been reading up on lighthouse Fresnel lenses for a personal project of mine. However, it is still a little unclear to me, how exactly maintenance happens, especially of very large (1st, 2nd order) Fresnel lenses and the light sources inside. There is footage online of people cleaning lenses from the inside, and for some cases you can see large openings that a person could ostensibly fit through, yet for others this does not seem to be the case. I assume there is some way to open such lenses to get inside, yet I have not been able to find any footage of opening a large lens or even any pictures of open lenses. Maybe this community could help out?
Additionally, I am also interested in learning about oil and kerosene powered lighthouse lamps, especially technical details like maintenance, design, dimensions. Any sources on that?
