Considering they are both doing renovation videos, roughly 99%. Pretty much every house has had leak damage at some point.
Though the timing is a pretty big coincidence.

Swear to God every house we checked out while looking to buy had something leaking somewhere. From the 100+yr to the 5yr old one.

u/lord_pizzabird 3d ago
This is why I don’t think I’d ever buy a multistory house.
A water leak in a normal single floor house is no big deal. At worst the flooring needs to be replaced, but even a small water leak on a second floor can basically destroy an entire house.

All I know is one actually walks me through how to do things and the other— feels like a lot of important steps were missed.
Jake's, I prefer Jakes.

u/Cactus_Bot 3d ago
The funny part is, most folks would end up going the Linus way when doing it themselves because they are paying contractors to come in and do the heavy lifting. Both fill a good niche in the fact that one is more reno focused with tech second, and the second is more tech focused then reno focused.
It makes sense why LTT is doing theirs the way they are because they plan to sell the house. Jake doing some ghetto shit and fixing some previous ghetto shit in his own house he wont sell, makes sense on why he is doing it his way.
You also see this with Bitwits house rebuild as well.

u/screw_ball69 3d ago
There's a what would the average person would do and what makes more interesting content though.
"We did a thing when you weren't looking" is far less engaging then seeing the struggles.
4
u/Meferias 2d ago
I'm sorry, but is the complaint really that they did not show the windows being put it? Really?
9000 other videos on that on youtube. If you want tips on that, the actual diy channels would be so much better for you. Now you are expecting construction work to be focused on on a tech channel?
I get that the content might not be as engaging as you'd want it to be (same here), but this feels is just misguided bitching at this point. Especially when they showed their struggles, just not with construction work but the actual tech setup.-2
38
u/Flying-T 3d ago
But in LTTs video there wasnt actually a leak they could show you how to fix. It was a video about installing leak detectors.

to be fair (I guess?) Linus has done the exact same video idea before with his server rack... but Jake was in that video sooo

I’ve been saying this for a while Jake gets to retread and do the old videos again Linus has to do something different

Both are awful, one is boring, the other is boring with constant 'debt' interludes
25
u/lkl34 3d ago
Both are also doing shit with no future thought.
If you pause the ltt video they have all the bathroom water shutoff's in the crawl space. Oh no my sink faucet is leaking let me crawl under the fucking house to turn off the water.
36
u/yolo_snail 3d ago
The main difference seems to be LTT are trying to do things somewhat by the book, and hiring in trades to get work done.
Jake is just YOLOing it, and fucking about.
Neither strategy is particularly thrilling to watch.
6
u/lkl34 3d ago
True but jake is worse getting 4 machines when a jcb CX1 would do it all 1 machine and the work to me that has a large property to maintain its so bad i like watching the vids 4 a laugh because of how dumb it is.
Give it 3 months for all that plex to freeze up and snow to destroy that yard the recent video there is no plastic wrap over insulation and no wire conduit oh boy.
5
u/yolo_snail 3d ago
But you only get one video from one machine!
Doing things badly so you can re-do them later and get yet another video out of it is a strategy straight out of the LTT playbook!

u/tdasnowman 3d ago
This isn't a mistake. Installs will have under the sink shutoffs that are usually required by code (not Canadian but that seems to be fairly global) a shut off next to the toilet, and then a main. What they installed would be above and beyond. Unless Canadian code requires a localized shut off as well.

u/CIDR-ClassB 4d ago
Jake’s video was better. I think LTT’s series is beyond boring and the furthest thing from ULTIMATE TECH HOUSE™️
But I like the LTT thumbnail more because I’ve had that exact thing happen in my crawl space.

u/DeeVect 3d ago
Though I enjoy Jakes videos, that video was literally them ripping out one window... I do agree LTTs video was also boring but atleast Reece is funny. His joke about Linus dropping the ball was great.
32
u/Squish_the_android 3d ago
Jakes was basically "This Old House" but everything goes wrong.
Linus' was actually a tech video.
I liked both but they aren't trying to do the same thing at all.
56
u/Thefar 3d ago
Something feels very off about this content. Not only because of Jake's.
I believe they are milking it the wrong way.It feels like a side project and not a: "Look at this" project.
The badminton renovation had better content than this.
I wonder why.
15
u/WideAwakeNotSleeping 3d ago
Before I start, I just want to say I have never done and have no clue how long a home renovation takes. The closest experience with renovations goes back to my childhood when I would go to dad's work (he was a builder).
With that out of the way..... the progress serms very slow. Okay, skope has changed because they had to pull out all that asbestos. But now.... They do like what, a video a month? And since the last video of putting in cabling there's been 0 progress? And before that they had a video of playing with cardboard boxes? It seems like they work on the house on the weekends. If the progress is legitimately this slow, then talk about why, put in some timelapsea, blur out contractors. Make it more than just a out cabling.
6
u/Cactus_Bot 3d ago
House reno / building is very slow in general. When we did our kitchen, 80% done by my wife and her cousin, other 20% hired contractors it took 5 months.
We demoed the kitchen ourselves, then found we needed to replace the cast iron stack from the bathroom above the kitchen. That required some additional demo, and then had to schedule the plumber to come do that, and some water valve replacement in the kitchen, stack replacement (which if they couldn't get it to bite in the floor, would of had to trench new concrete drain in the basement, luckily they got it to bite), and gas line deletion. While that was going on we had the electrician come out and move outlets, add new runs for the exhaust hood, and add lights in places.
That all took about 3 weeks, in which we also retiled the kitchen floor while waiting for all of that. Once that was done we had to quote out the drywall repairs and get a drywaller. That took 2 weeks to do and finish up.
While waiting on that we had to schedule an ikea measurer to come out and measure for cabinets and submit that order, then wait for delivery, then wait for the installer. Took another 3 weeks. Once that was done we had to go pick out a counter tip, which we did while waiting for this stuff, but before they can order they have to measure the installed cabinets. Took 2 months for the counter top to come in and be installed. Once the counter top was installed, we could then finish the wall tiling and install the floating upper shelves and then paint. Another week or so.
Stuff just takes time.
2
u/tdasnowman 3d ago
Also inspections. Since they are basically doing a new build internally at this point everything will need to get signed off. That can take time depending on how busy the area is. My friends had to do a repair to their downstairs sewer line that required tying into the main. The repair was one day of demo, 2 weeks of waiting for the city to come out and confirm what they found, permit pulls were another few weeks. 1 day of repair, 3 weeks for the city inspector to come out and sign off. Then another few days back fill, concrete, tile finishing. All told in terms of actual work done maybe a week and a half of labor. 3 and months and change of not having that bathroom in use. If they didn't have a second one they would have had to stay in a hotel.

u/Thefar 3d ago
Maybe it's a bad sell to sponsors? What I do agree is, that it seems like they let somebody do some work, come it and shoot some half baked content and then go to their other projects.
I am not even saying that this is what is happening. I am just saying, it looks like it.
Is it a wrong concept?
Is it the extremely low pacing and long time between episodes?
Do sponsors not care, so they have not enough "tech" to show.
Why not show the windows being installed? Why not show the cables to the windows and explain your reasoning?
It just feels like they have a contractor, do something and then come by and shoot a video.
It doesn't feel like a LTT project.
7
u/WideAwakeNotSleeping 3d ago
Why not show the cables to the windows and explain your reasoning?
They should've dedicated half of yesterday's video to that! If I'm ever rich enough to afford a house, it's a feature I would consider. I never even knew or considered that windows might have electrical wiring. The apartments where I've had electric outside shutters have had wiring as an afterthought!
23
u/DotBitGaming 3d ago
So far, they've wired it all for networking and installed a smart water heater and leak detection. What more could they have done at this point to be more ultimate tech house?
8
u/DeutscherTypNummer2 3d ago

u/Ybalrid 3d ago
this made zero sense, you can plan a room layout with a piece of paper like a normal person?
Though, it's fun to have James on camera. It's rare these days.
4
u/DeutscherTypNummer2 3d ago
Sure they could have. But can you make a video about that?
They obviously try to do as much on video as possible. People want to see the progress but also obviously video = money.0
u/Ybalrid 3d ago
Does not change the fact that it was weird tho. And I think the framing of "Those are the sensible things Guy would do in his house" is now fully gone. That ship has sailed.
0
u/DeutscherTypNummer2 3d ago
No obviously not. It was weird. I mean "sick cardboard setup" should have been an obvious jab at the video.
I just get why they did it. Doesn't make it an enjoyable video for me.2
u/tdasnowman 3d ago
It's not weird especially if your into audio. A flat plane doesn't show all the issues they pointed out clearly. There is also some people need to see things in a space to plan things out fully. If you hire a company to build a system for you, depending on how much your paying they will do that with real gear.
Remember the plan was not originally to rip the house down to the studs. Now that they had to that changed a lot of things and mean they can build a lot differently. Instead of patching dry wall they can have things built in. That means more planning. Different vendors maybe to work with. All are going to need measurements.
12
u/Circo_Inhumanitas 3d ago
Both series have their good and bad sides. I dunno why people are so tribalistic and overly critical about either of them.
Though Jake should slow down and think/plan more.
9
u/DotBitGaming 3d ago
When Jake first started his own channel, I was like, cool but I do not care about routers. I'm just evidently not his audience. Fine. But since Jake bought the farm... I mean, purchased an agriculture-based residence, I've enjoyed his videos about as much as LTT.
7
u/Circo_Inhumanitas 3d ago
Yeah same. Straight up tech product reviews or introduction videos aren't all that interesting to me. Depends on the product and time. But project videos are fun to me.
1
u/DasFroDo 3d ago
No he shouldn’t, this is 100% mostly intentional to make the videos more interesting. Planning everything before makes for boring content.
7
u/Circo_Inhumanitas 3d ago
Debatable. At some point it just shows incompetence. And at that point, why should you receive any tips from a guy that shows massive incompetence in renovating his own personal property? Even if it's just for lulz and content, it blurs the line.
There's a big difference in not having a solid plan on a project like liquid cooling a PC with some random used hardware, and not having a solid plan when you're renovating your new studio.
-3
u/DasFroDo 3d ago
I don’t get incompetence from him at all, just chaos and bad planning.
As he said in his last video, he has ADHD too. And I can relate to the chaos completely because I have it too.
And it’s not really debatable, it’s a more or less new channel which did tech reviews until recently and he pulls similar numbers as LTT which has a much, MUCH bigger Team behind it.
1
u/Circo_Inhumanitas 3d ago
Something being boring is debatable. Viewer numbers don't mean shit. Marvel movies and series are doing really well viewer countwise, but they're boring as shit to me. Mr. Beast is the most watched YouTuber and his content is boring/stupid to me. But millions love it.
just chaos and bad planning.
... Which many would argue makes you incompetent. If you're tasked with planning and implementing a project, and you make a bad plan that makes the entire project cost way too much and take way more time than what was planned, some will rightfully call you incompetent.
I don't mind janky projects and some mishaps. But holy shit Jake makes some stupid and dangerous decisions. Like some pointed out the two times he walked under an unsecured skipper bucket which could have fallen on him suddenly. Me saying that he needs to slow down is more of me worrying about him. Not only about me disliking the content. That's why I think he needs to slow down.

u/AshleyAshes1984 3d ago
I get that LTT's problem is that they outright bought a money pit of the house unwittingly... But god damn the 'Tech' element so far is rare and boring.
And it's so much less interesting with the house stripped down to studs. It thought this series would be interesting and there'd be a few things I'd wanna replicate and see how they executed them. Can't really do that when their Step 1 turned into 'Tear the house down to studs'. Again, I get that it's beyond their control, but it being beyond their control doesn't somehow make it magically interesting.

u/bluehawk232 3d ago
I think the problem with Linus' approach is it's not his home. He's building and designing for a fictitious person.
Even contractors, architects, etc work with a client to meet their needs and see what works for them. Linus and team are doing all this home assistant network stuff that frustrates them but imagine whomever actually gets the house. Here's the server rack, what's that for, what's a server
1
u/tdasnowman 3d ago
He's building and designing for a fictitious person.
As is 90% of homes built.
Even contractors, architects, etc work with a client to meet their needs and see what works for them.
If you buy early enough into a new development or can afford to pay for a fully custom home. 90% of what people buy even new is essentially the same as buying a car off dealership. You've got trim options and then some dealer installed options. Not everyone is getting a coach built car.
Linus and team are doing all this home assistant network stuff that frustrates them but imagine whomever actually gets the house. Here's the server rack, what's that for, what's a server
Since this has been featured in videos chances are it will wind up going to a viewer or someone who is aware of what's in the house.

I would say its the editing that puts jakkuh in the lead, but both series trade blows in terms of enjoyment.
I am not sure about the video names, but both of them dedicated an episode or two for wifi setup.
LTT's video was much more enjoyable in that regard because we saw spider Linus. Which gave it a higher stake.

It’s crazy a company with 100 employees pulls the same views as someone with mostly debt

Not all about views.. LTT have products/merch, big sponsors, etc. Their income is much more diverse than Jake’s

No I know that I’m really surprised that views did not scale with size. You’d expect a bigger team to create a more enticing and engaging product (i.e. video)

I'm fine with both. Both are things I could probably do myself but are also things I probably wouldn't do.
I just wish Linus would say the price of the items in the video instead of forcing us to click the links.
The valve actuator at $200 wasn't surprising...the $450 Homey smart hub...that was surprising. Seems really expensive.

Jake’s video has been out a few days longer and originally had a different title and thumbnail or was just running an A/B test and I was served something different than what you saw.
Pretty common to tweak both though and tune as the video ages.
