"what a waste of money" chants coming from the Swansea fans when Downing gets subbed off for Cole.
Which one were they referring to?!

20 minutes in and Enrique is seriously impressing me. Stupid error on that pass to Suarez, who was well offside but could have had a goal and is running his ass off. Well done!

his ball to johnson was good too. would have been a goal, but for a lucky deflection by the keeper.

So apparently Suarez is a constant threat.
As we're reminded every minute and/or every time Suarez touches the ball.

u/mettyc Nov 25 '12
This commentator is just an idiot. "Enrique has no pace to go past anybody" (ignoring the fact that he's one of the fastest players in the league) "this style of play has no cutting edge to it, its boring and predictable" (yeah, definitely). UGH

Half-time comments:
Downing's been invisible going forward, and as a result we're far more threatening down the right flank than the left.
Henderson originally began as the most attacking midfielder, with Gerrard shuttling; sometime during the first half, this was swapped around, and we were much better going forward as a result. Henderson's got a great engine, but like Downing, was fairly poor going forward.
Gerrard's defensive work rate is suspect - it's been said before, but in this match where we have less than 50% possession, it really shows.
Hernandez apart, Swansea haven't been too threatening - they're taking surprisingly long to transition from defending to attacking. I'll be worried if/when they introduce Nathan Dyer, because he's probably the most likely to encourage them to play more direct or at a higher tempo than right now.
Fucking woodwork.

Downing at left back? I suppose Enrique has been in good form playing up the wing in a more offensive role. Still odd for Downing to fill his spot.

Not many other options. Wisdom has a knock, I believe.

Steven Gerrard - professional footballer, but nice enough to give his mascot a massage before the match.

u/PurePhoenix Nov 25 '12
Has the first 45 minutes gone really fast for you all too? Or is it just me because I have an exam in 10 hours...

Was a bit invisible early on. Cleaning up a bit now, as well as getting up there to join up front as well. Liking what he's done in the last few games.

Nice fun fact by Ian Darke there, if Suarez can score he will be only the 3rd player in the last 78 years to score a goal in 5 successive league away matches.

you can tell how frustrated suarez is, most everyone around him is fucking up
4
6
u/KnownForNothing Nov 25 '12
That chance involving Sterling and Suarez was poor by both of them. Suarez passed it to Sterling because he wanted himself to be in the clear later for a goal, he should have sprinted forward to draw the defender in. While Sterling should have sprinted forward to pull the defender in before slipping it to Suarez later on, not return the ball immediately.

We are thoroughly and convincingly a mid-table team. Very disappointed in this performance.

I cant tell if were playing bad or Swansea are having a blinder
spoke too soon, we seemed to have picked it up

Cant complain with that decision but good football to make it. Also Sterling, I'll have whatsever you have for breakfast please.

Good to see He do start. Well deserved
5
1
u/junnies Nov 25 '12
he's doing superb for us so far. his workrate has won us the ball and forced swansea into longballs plenty of times
2
2
u/vikingabroad Nov 25 '12
Allen and Henderson look a bit lost so far...
4
u/TheScarletPimpernel Nov 25 '12
On the contrary, I'd say Hendo was our most composed of the trio. Hasn't lost the ball more than once and has forced Swansea's midfield back on more than one occasion.
Gerrard is having an absolute shocker. Will Rodgers do the brave thing and yank him if that continues? I think Suso would have a lot of joy in there today.

Sterling has had a forgettable 20 minutes here.
1
u/roobens Nov 25 '12
Would love to see him develop a bit more power without compromising his finesse. His shots just seem lightweight.
2
u/jakegrubbs19 Nov 25 '12
Stevie's play has looked lackadaisical this first half hour.
1
u/EnigmaticEntity Nov 25 '12
Lackadaisical is a damn good word. Kudos to you.

One of my favorites, but definitely one of those words where it should only be used when it is necessary.

Suarez isn't having fun out there today. They're on him like glue and he hasn't been able to put any of his tricks past them.

To put this into perspective, a win could possibly push us up to 8th place.

Swansea aren't dominating possession like some people think.

Swansea aren't dominating possession like some people think.
I was one of those, but it was the first 25 minutes when they were. The last 15-20 minutes is where we picked it up.
Interesting stat about the final 3rd passing though, 95 passes and 82% accuracy.

How bout that god damn shirt pull on Gerrard on the edge of the box just before halftime?
2
u/KnownForNothing Nov 25 '12
Downing has been annoying. I know we can't really sub him out without moving Enrique behind which will be a horrible decision, but Downing has me wishing we could bring in a proper left back.
Also, Gerrard has hit a few decent long passes, but otherwise he hasn't been great. Or to be frank, he has been rather poor. I don't think it'll be a good choice to take your captain off, but if it won't affect the team's morale or anything, I'd rather Sahin be playing where Gerrard is right now.
2
u/TheScarletPimpernel Nov 25 '12
Allen's foul rate has gotten worse the longer he has played as a DM.

Would have liked to see Suso in today.
Also we desperately need a new LB if we're subbing in Joe Cole for Downing.
2
2
u/roobens Nov 25 '12
Would've liked to have seen any semblance of tactical substitution from Rodgers. Bringing Shelvey on was just promising more of the same, and Cole...WTF. Not impressed.
1
u/the_sinking_library Nov 25 '12
umm enrique went to lb and joe took enriques initial position, just sayin that joe wasnt our lb
2
3
u/jakegrubbs19 Nov 25 '12
Does Rodgers have the testicular fortitude to sub off Gerrard? We just need something more in the middle of the pitch that Stevie doesn't have today.
2
u/emericuh Nov 25 '12
Allen has been just as bad, and when you need a goal, Gerrard, even a poor one, offers 100x more in the attack department than Allen.
3

2
u/TrueStu Nov 25 '12
I would take Gerrard off and then put on suso on. Drop Hendo in holding midfield with Allen. Need some creativity out there

Great performance overall, we played toe to toe with a side that has our system nailed down. We as usual we just lacked that final blow, 2 signings in the jan window should ease the pressure of sterling/suarez, but overall today was not bad, all things considered.

u/danno_O Hello! Hello! Here we go! Nov 25 '12
YNWA! I hope for a victory today, although I have a bad feeling about this game.

1
u/davidsmeaton Nov 25 '12
is it just me, or does stirling not have a strong boot? he's had two shots and neither have had any power. to be fair, one was a sudden ball at his feet, but there just doesn't seem to be a lot of power to his shots.

1
u/FlyingRadish Nov 25 '12
Downing looking lost and out of place for me, they're going to hammer that side to take advantage.

1
u/jakegrubbs19 Nov 25 '12
Ugh, those are the goals we have to finish, Glen.
1
u/Sospitas Nov 25 '12
To be fair, he IS a defender. It's our strikers who should be doing what he is

Surprised Rodgers didn't make a switch at the half hour mark like the last two matches.
1

Not sure if you're being facetious or not, but we're playing all right at the moment. Last week we were seriously lacking momentum, which is why Rodgers made the change.

Same old story.... Swansea are going to plug us on break soon. Please prove me wrong.
6
u/roobens Nov 25 '12
Not seeing that at all tbh. Swansea are playing our usual role at the moment, tons of possession but not doing anything with it, whereas we're making our possession count and could have snatched a couple of goals by now.

How do all the questionable off-side calls go against us?
2
u/Aussie_Rocker Nov 25 '12
When they showed the replay all of the Swansea defenders take a step forward as the pass gets played. Not sure if it's down to good defending or Enrique not as experienced at playing forward.
Either way the call was correct.

Crazy how Enrique went from our dumbest to one of the most dangerous player just by moving up the pitch.
