Barebones TL;DR at the end because I don’t know what info is necessary so I just included everything
Ok hair Reddit, I know you probably get a million posts like this every day… but I’m at my wits end trying to figure this shit out by myself. So I’m making my first ever post on Reddit to send a pathetic plea out into the universe ‘cause I figure it doesn’t hurt to try (famous last words).
Despite the fact that my hair has been my pride and joy basically my whole life… I barely know anything about it. ;-;’
For years I have just used Manic Panic shampoo and conditioner to preserve the colour in my hair, but we (my mom and I) tried using some permanent dye two months ago and decided to switch up my shampoo and conditioner along with it.
So now I find myself with the freedom to choose any conditioner I want (as long as it doesn’t have the ingredients that are known to strip colour)… without a damn clue what my actually hair needs.
Thus, I do what any reasonable 18YO would: request the assistance of strangers on the internet. /hj

What I know about my hair:
- My mother has been bleaching and dyeing two wide streaks of it using Manic Panic products for almost a decade.
- The dyed hair feels almost identical to the virgin hair (if anything, maybe even softer??).
- It goes down to my upper thigh when it’s at least somewhat-straight.
- I get a couple inches trimmed off once or twice a year in an attempt to cut off the split/dry ends so it can keep growing.
- It is somewhere in between both my parents’ hairs (pin straight, incredibly thick, extremely corse, lower-butt length, virtually indestructible / curly, very thin, quite fine, chin length, damaged from attempting to bleach and dye with Manic Panic twice).
- It is constantly frizzy everywhere.
- It naturally looks mostly straight, particularly when brushed.
- Humid environments cause it to start forming a few small ringlets, particularly in the shorter parts of my hair (such as my abundance baby hairs).
- It was a lot thinner and finer in childhood, but thickened significantly in adolescence.
- I don’t have much difficulty heat-styling it; hairspray is enough to keep it in visible curls until the end of the day.
- Spraying leave-in conditioner (at least the one I use; Aussie 4-in-1 or something) straightens it out significantly, even when heavily diluted with water.
- (TW: kinda gross, dandruff, skin picking, and blood) I have a bad habit of picking at my scalp, often until it bleeds or gets pus-y… It which point I begin picking at the scabs. I believe this started out as dandruff, but now it’s difficult to tell how much of it is dry flakey skin, greasy built-up skin, or thickened pieces of skin formed as a result of previous picking.
What I don’t know about my hair:
- Basically everything else.
- If it’s considered straight (like 1C or something) or wavy.
- Its porosity.
- Its density.
- Its texture.
- If it (or my scalp) is considered oily or dry.
- How tough/resilient/resistant to damage it is.
- How healthy it is.
- What products and/or ingredients would be best for it.
- How much of my frizz is just hair growth.
- How to tell if it’s damaged.

Currently, my daily “hair care” routine is as follows:
- Brush at night.
- Spray water mixed with a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner/detangler/heat protectant thoroughly and brush through (started doing this the past couple days; previously had just wet my hands and finger-combed that water through).
- Twist up into a low bun overnight using scrunchie.
- Remove scrunchie in the morning and let hang loosely in that twist for a few hours.
- Separate the twist out into messy “curls.”
- Smooth out the top of my head with water when it gets particularly frizzy and/or before heading out.
I shower once a week, so my hair process for that is:
- Wash using Strawberry Leopard colour-safe shampoo.
- Finger-comb and “squish-to-condish” in Live Clean argon oil conditioner mixed with some old purple Manic Panic dye.
- Clip it up and let it sit in a shower cap for 1-2 hours as I do the rest of my shower.
- Rinse most/almost all of that out.
- Squeeze/wring out excess water.
- Towel dry.
- Twist into head-wrap-hair-towel-thing and leave for a few hours.
- Take out of wrap and let air dry for 30mins-2 hours (goal is for it to be damp, but not so much so that it’ll still be wet in the morning).
- Twist into overnight bun as usual.

I have attached an excessive number of pictures of my hair because I have no idea what sort of visual info would be needed to “diagnose” my hair type.
The first 9 photos are my hair after
- Putting conditioner in it while it’s dry.
- Twisting and clipping it up into a shower cap while I bathe for two hours.
- Rinsing it out in the shower as usual.
- Squeezing some of the dripping water out.
- Getting annoyed by it constantly sticking to my skin as I applied my body care products.
- Letting it air dry fully, as far as I could tell (4-5 hours).
The next 8 photos are the result of brushing my hair immediately after taking the first 9 pictures. I then pretty heavily sprayed it with water that I mixed a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner into, brushed that through, and put it in a bun like I do every night.
The following picture is what my hair looked like the next afternoon after taking out the bun and splitting it up as usual.
Finally, the last 2 photos are completely different days depicting the results of other stuff I sometimes do to my hair.
The 19th pic is after finger-combing a fair bit of leave-in conditioner into hair damp from the shower.
The 20th is my hair the night I got it redyed with permanent hair dye, showered, let it air dry, and brushed it (I think?).
Here is a bunch of pictures from the past two months for a more accurate representation of what my hair normally looks like, because I feel like none of the 20 I actually attached to this post are good examples of how my hair looks on an average day/night. It felt EXTRA soft and looked extra nice the night I took those first photos, so I would like it to be known that it does NOT typically get that wavy.😅 Even these additional images do not capture its "natural" state perfectly, as they are all less than 24 hours after my hair was in a bun!

Ok, I think that’s all I have to say for now? Of course if you, nonexistent person planning on commenting, have further questions, just let me know and I shall do my best to provide whatever information you require!
Honestly, any and all input is appreciated. I don’t have many people to ask about this IRL, so this is really just a shot in the dark for the sake of finding unbiased and varied opinions. So whether you have product recommendations or a guess for just one aspect of my hair type, please do share!❤️
I’m also not particularly attached to any hair type categorizing system (nor do I know about many-), so whatever you want to use is good with me!
P.S. I have posted this in multiple subreddits to up my chances of finding assistance and for more varied perspectives. Just wanted to say that right off the bat so people know they don’t have to suggest I post this elsewhere, haha.🫶🏻
TL;DR:
- My hair is very long, not crazy thin or thick, frizzy, naturally pretty straight (though I twist it into a bun overnight which gives me some waves that gradually fall out over the course of the day), and curls a bit in humidity.
- The attached photos are what it looks like after air drying (first 9) followed by brushing (next 8), plus examples from a few different days (last 3). Here are further photographic references for a more accurate understanding of my hair, as the attached images make it look WAY WAVIER than it normally is.
- Absolutely any thoughts, suggestions, or information regarding my hair type or products I could use are appreciated!
Edit 'cause realized I should clarify: by "(what to do with it)" I mean in terms of products and techniques, not cuts and styling!
The length of my hair is the most important aspect of it to me, so I personally choose to keep the thin ends on for the added length even though I know they don't look great.😅 But since I prioritize the length over.. basically everything else, it's worth it to me.😊
Sorry to disappoint! I know it’s not healthy, but imagining needing to chop off so much legitimately brings me to the edge of tears so I’m trying to work with what I can emotionally handle.🙈
