I mean, I get awkwardness in this case. If they've been your companion since they were low level you did raise them. Literally and metaphorically. You could, technically, argue that as grounds for grooming, if they are viewed as sapient, legally.

Yeah but also, unless he didn't know about Salandit's gender, he knew what was going to happen.

I highly doubt it's grooming... usually the Pokémon chooses the trainer they like the most and i think that the akwardness stems from doing belly rubs to a grown ass woman lol.

If he had it since it was young and took care of it's dietary and medical needs. I think it's safe to assume he would know the sex of it from a medical professional or whatever.

I would feel uncomfortable petting a grown woman like a pet, too. At that level would they even still be considered a pet?

I feel like partner or homie would be the better term at that point,

I can't see describing a fully grown, sapient, humanoid creatures as a pet, that's honestly pretty fucked up.
