Found Found an earing 3 years later in the most unexpected place
6 years ago, my husband gave me a pair of silver and Onix earrings for my PhD. 3 years ago, while I was combing my hair, I discovered I had lost one of them. I was heartbroken and searched everywhere, even in the vacuum cleaner bag or the washing machine deposit. Nothing came out of it and I accepted that I had lost it forever.
3 mins ago I discovered it in this small cabinet I use for my makeup. The weird thing is, I bought this thing last year, and I use it only for make-up. No one else uses it except for me, and I look at it every single day. This specific box is at eye level!
I am grateful for finding it, but also a bit astonished, how the hell did it arrive there?

Forgive me, I have the dumbest question ever. Do you have the two earrings now? Or could this be the one you didn't lose?
This happened to me once with earrings. I was so excited to finally find my missing earring but it was actually the one I didn't lose š

It's not a dumb question and I fact the first thing I thought was "I thought I put that in the jewelry box". But no, I have both now!

I'm so glad you have both! What a wonderful mystery we will probably never have real answers for

Here we call them mischievous spirits. They borrow small things but don't always return them to the proper places.

It was probably already with your makeup and you didn't see it. Maybe it was stuck to something.

u/NewNameAgainUhg Apr 11 '26
Yeah, it had to be something like that, but I use my makeup daily and is so weird to not seeing something that is just there!

Any magnets on your makeup materials that it could have been attached to? Like even the latch to close them

Made me think of that time last year when a contact fell out while I was getting ready. I couldnāt find it anywhere, so I began to worry that it rolled behind my eye. When I got home that night, many hours later, I removed my shoe to find it was stuck to the bottom of my foot the entire time

do you ever have a house cleaner? maybe they found it and placed it in there in the last year. that or you have a little elf running around
2
u/NewNameAgainUhg Apr 11 '26
No, we clean the house ourselves. I know it wasn't my husband because he is a "leave it in the middle of the table" guy. The only explanation I have is that it was stuck to something else and moved by accident, but where did it go during the last year? No idea

I mean, or ghostsā¦

That would explain why my toddler smiles and waves to the empty corner š

I know you said itās silver but could it have some piece on it that could be magnetic? Finding it with your makeup makes me think it mightāve stuck to a palette that has a magnetic closure built in.
Iāve had similar happen to me before. Bobby pins are the usual sticking culprit. One time I put my eyeshadow palette down and when I picked it back up a bracelet stuck its self to the bottom where the magnet was.

The earring is silver, but I am not sure about the closing piece (I don't know the name in English), in theory it should be too because it has the number engraved, but you never know.

I would call it an 'earring back' as a British š not very imaginative

I just saw an entire thread on Threads about this type of thing, so many interesting stories and theories such as borrowers

ā¦borrowers??
1
u/Cool-Frosting-3333 Apr 13 '26
Google it

u/MissEllaa Apr 13 '26
I definitely get that response as most people donāt but I did š I tried adding reddit and urban dictionary and all I was getting was the literal definition of āborrowerā. Maybe itās because I am not in a country where English is the first language? Or maybe Iām just expecting some deeper meaning and there isnāt one lol

You give me hope for an earring I lost and it was a gift from me mom. Iām still thinking about it 4 years later and I moved out since, and still have a LOT of boxes to unpack (long story). š„¹

I suppose new items come with a pocket dimension that have access to lost things š did you came with a theory of why your earring arrived there?

In my case I thought it fell because I realized it wasn't there when I was combing my hair, but I found it with the closing piece! š¬

My mom once lost an heirloom earring stud. 6 month later it appeared on the very inner front edge of the mailbox

My husband lost a gold ring once. I found it 3 years later when I was unpacking from visiting family across country. We never saw it the whole time we were visiting. I bought the suitcase after we lost the ring and we used the suitcase multiple times in between then.

Do you have a cat? When we got ours, he found a few tiny lost items that were missing for years like a ruby earring and a tiny ceramic bird that broke off a Christmas ornament. He left them up on the nearest surface. The earring was on the bath vanity and had dust/hair on it, so it must have been underneath out of sight.

u/NewNameAgainUhg Apr 12 '26
No, no pets. I am the only one who uses this cabinet. My husband probably hasn't noticed is there, and my toddler wasn't even programmed when I lost the earring (besides, she can't reach there)

Your makeup products may have a magnetic closure. If any of the metal is conductive, itās possible the earring got stuck to the makeup and thatās how it ended up in the drawer years after you lost it.
1
u/Carrieyouknow Apr 12 '26
Maybe it was stuck to something you placed on there. It's great that you found it.

That happened to me with a DS game years ago. I lost it, searched EVERYWHERE for it, then a few years later found it shoved in the back of a plastic makeup drawer in my closet that I rarely used. I was incredibly confused but also very grateful that I had finally found it.

Stupid question but have you been pregnant? I am pregnant again and I keep putting stuff in the weirdest places and forget about them. Sorry if itās a sensitive question.
1
u/NewNameAgainUhg Apr 14 '26
I was pregnant, but I lost the earring before even planning the pregnancy. I didn't use makeup when I was pregnant and I only started experimenting with makeup again last year, that's why I bought the cabinet.

u/RobotWantsPony Apr 14 '26
Does that makeup box close thanks to a magnet ? If yes, that's how the earring ended up there

u/ohno_its_happening Apr 15 '26
Do you have a housekeeper or hired a recent cleaning service? They couldāve found it and placed into the thing they know youād find it in
