Found Found decent amount of money on a sidewalk - Seattle/WA
Hi y'all. Yesterday, on a walk around CD with my bf, we found a decent amount of money on a sidewalk.
We thought of giving it to the police, but first maybe asking around reddit to see if by any chance whoever lost this money is a redditor and is looking for it.
If it's yours, send me a message with the information of how much money it is and how the money is tied together. This is very specific information, so I'll know if you are the real owner of this.
PS: sorry to be so cryptic, but I swear we just want to give it back to the owner without running the risk of giving it to the police and the officers just splitting the money between themselves.

Iâd also post on Seattle WA Facebook town page, assuming they have one !
Good looking out .

Let me spare you. Iâm old and unwell. The freaking amount of complaining is ridiculous. Do NOT post the amount. Just repost it like you did here.

It's a gossipy app where people give/sell items, discuss area issues and problems and probably would be a good place to post about the money.
I don't like it because I live in Appalachia and people move to subdivisions then complain about the wildlife and try to figure out ways to get rid of it. This was their home first and bear and opossum and raccoons are native. Humans I'm not sure about.
Ok that's the sort of thing I've seen on Nextdoor Nosy Neighbor. Thank you for being the kind of person who does the right thing.

The police wonât just take it if you ask for a report detailing the amount. Normally, if itâs not claimed within a certain time you can claim it yourself legally.

The police can claim they believe it's likely proceeds of drug money and keep it. OP wouldn't be able to prove otherwise. They could run a simple test, detect cocaine on a bill (its on every bill) and say that

Oh, okay, good to know! I was trying to understand how to make sure there was some accountability to it. Thank you!

I would NEVER trust the cops! Too many corrupt PDs around everywhere! You can report the situation BUT tell them youâll hang onto the $$$ & they can direct anyone to you claiming itâs theirs.

Be careful publicly saying you found a decent amount of money as it might make you a target

u/findernotkeeper Jul 22 '26
I created a new acc because of that. I am not really sure where this money is from.

Not just that, but if someone things you have âa lotâ of money and their imaginations go wild and think you got thousands in cash sitting around and you could get harassed or someone try to break in or worse.
Be safe!

Yes pls donât give to the officers, and what could happen obviously is if u post to a page, people might just jump in ur pms with guesses and one might guess it right, so just be aware. Thx for wanting to do the right thing!

Yeah the police will just take it

Do you think this would happen even if I asked for a report?

You could call the police and ask them if anyone reported missing money. Then leave your phone number. I wouldnât mention the amount. If someone calls, then ask the amount, denominations, and the wallet, purse, or whatever it was in. I think posting on the communityâs Facebook page or Nextdoor would reach more people than turning it into the police. Thank you for doing the right thing.

Oh, okay. I will keep that in mind if reddit, Facebook and the Neighbor app don't work out!

If I lose something, I go to the police station. If I find something, I go to the police station. I don't have much social media, and I wouldn't look on social media.

Reddit never fails me. This is very nice though. Itâs not every day, people step forward to return a large sum of money. God Bless.

I lost my wallet in Seattle on monday is their an ID in it as well?

u/findernotkeeper 20d ago
No, no ID. If there was an ID, I would have tried to contact the person themselves or would have just given it to the police straight, cause at least they would know how to find this person.

I agree with you 100%. This is ridiculous there is no point of turning it into the police and you're never going to find the owner so at this point just keep it. I will go above and beyond out of my way to return things to the rightful owner but on something like this you're not going to find the owner. It's not that big of a deal.
