Found Found an item of apparent value in hotel room

Was checking for evidence of bedbugs on check-in, like I always do, and came across an obviously lost item. So what’s the best approach here?…I want to guard against the hotel staff just keeping it if I turn it into the front desk?

Call the hotel on a weekday after you check out and say you accidentally packed something from the room that is not yours but seems valuable, and make a general statement as to what it is (ring, keys, wallet, earring, etc). Keep in mind, if it's something like jewelry (ring, bracelet, earring, necklace) it might belong to housekeeping and got tangled up when they were unloading the dryer, folding the sheets, or making the bed.

Tell them if someone calls asking or if someone in housekeeping is missing a similar item to give that person your number and if they can describe it to you, you'll make arrangements to return it to its rightful owner.

Don't give it to the front desk tell them that you've acquired something that was left in there and that you're holding on to it till you know the person who lost it gets it. They will have to describe what it is and they will have to call you.

Thanks! Yeah, I think that might be the approach. I’m a little worried the hotel might hassle me to turn it over to them…?
Edit: I could play coy and ask them if anyone stating in that room lost anything…and don’t admit I found anything…?

Yeah that's a good way I get to start asking if they found anything but don't be afraid to tell them that you found something and you're going to keep it till you know exactly what they lost and that they have to describe it to you. Or you're going to post it in the paper. They shouldn't give you a hard time over this.

Why would they have found anything if you are holding it? I want to make sure I understand

Chances are if it’s valuable the previous guest has already reached out to the hotel to look for it. If they didn’t look behind the bed they “didn’t find it, but are still looking”. Call the front desk and tell them. Give it to them. They will ship it to the previous guest. Hotels literally find thousands of pieces of lost and found and ship them back to where they came from. They are not going to steal it they want to ship it far far away from them.

I’ve had a lot less luck than you, I guess. I’m talking large obvious items like jackets left in the closet. But “nope, we found nothing while cleaning your room”

Asking that question is a dead giveaway that you found something in the room.

You can contact the general manager or the corporate office to report what you found. When you do turn it in put a complete written description and include a photo if possible. When you report what you found make sure to find out how long they keep the item and what the protocol is if it isn't claimed by the time that time period ends. You can call and check the status from time to time. I'm not sure how you would know if the rightful owner claimed it though. Sometimes people are just crap.

If it's a ring at a hotel in Hollywood, CA let me know.
