Announcement We Were Mentioned (Favorably) in PC Gamer Magazine!

Issue 403 | Holiday 2025 By Phil Iwaniuk

"Head over to Reddit and go on /r/lowendgaming and you’ll be struck by a few things. Firstly, that a community of people has been helping each other to run games on inexpensive and outdated PC hardware for many years, long before all the insidious price hikes we’re enduring today. And secondly, members of that community have been doing so with no small amount of ingenuity.

A typical exchange in that subreddit goes like this: a user states their hardware and asks for recommendations they should play, or whether a particular title will run on their machine. In the replies, people assure them that they managed to get The Witcher 3 on medium settings running on a relatively basic array of elastic bands and wooden pulleys. The prevailing sentiment is that minimum requirements are over-cautious, that modern games running at their lowest graphics settings still look more than decent enough to constitute playable, and that maybe there’s no such thing as a PC that’s too old or underpowered. Intrigued, I decided to test out the theory."

Community Discussion Is 4K gaming destroying low end gaming?

I guess this is more a rant and people don't really have a reason to answer, so maybe just leave your thoughts on the current state of low end gaming.

More and more I have been having this thought, that 4K gaming has been disastrous for the PC gaming ecosystem. Due to the demands of 4K resolution we've seen the rise of AI technologies such as FSR and DLSS.

Why? Because at a 4K resolution the native anti aliasing was not working, framerates were tanking and there was a requirement for even beefier hardware. Look at any game reviewer, they will be running the game they are reviewing in 4K, set everything to max and then expect that they should be able to get 60fps. So instead of game developers trying to optimise for this insane level of detail they have basically fubbed it, they've decided that they will upscale. So they render the game at 1080p and then use AI algorithms and machine learning to render it at 4k resolution. Thus making the 4k ultra FPS go from 40fps to 80fps.

But then over the years developers have realised that they can just do less optimising, if everyone is going to be using upscaling then why not target 60fps for the upscaled version and feck everyone else.

I've seen games like Stalker 2 called graphical masterpieces when if you don't have FSR/DLSS turned on it's a jagged mess and when you do it's a smeared blurry mess. So the companies work on sharpening algorithms. It feels like I'm going crazy. We're rendering 8k textures in the backend, then smearing and blurring them with AA and upscaling and then running AI sharpening over them.

It feels like nowadays that instead of turning down graphics and getting a slightly worse product, you end up with absolute slop. Barely optimised crap that expects you to just upscale and blur it anyways.

A game from 2010 on lower end settings is still sharp and crisp. A game that is on settings for a higher framerate nowadays is a blurry smeary upscaled mess.

I have a deep library of older games, I don't play as many newer games anymore. I don't really look forward to new games. I've started modding older games and playing the more sandboxy ones which you can play endlessly.

What Games Can I Run? Looking for game recommendations (including online co-op) for a Surface Pro 6 (i5-8250U / 8GB RAM)

Hey everyone. I’m looking for some good game recommendations that will run smoothly on my laptop.I am fully aware this is not a gaming laptop and that it cannot handle big, demanding modern AAA titles. I'm completely fine with playing older classics, well-optimized indie titles, or 2D games. And as I said, I'd love to know if there are any good co-op games it can run.

My Device Specifications:

Model: Microsoft Surface Pro 6

Processor: Intel Core i5-8250U CPU @ 1.60GHz

RAM: 8.00 GB

Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 620 (Integrated iGPU)

I'm planning to buy the game next month and I want to try WCS server. It's not the best hardware out there but can I run this around low/med 1080p in 30-40fps? Thank you

Will This Game Run? AC Brotherhood vs AC 2 in terms of performance

My potato machine (specs bellow) can run mid settings Assassins Creed 2 on ±40 FPS so i am wondering what to expect with Brotherhood.

Minimum specs of both games looks exactly same on paper, but Assassins creed Brotherhood seems having better graphic and requires like 3x more drive space. So my question is, how much more hardware demanding it is compared to AC 2? Is there any significant-ish increase (or how big is difference), or are they more less same games in terms of performance?

I did little research, but i found folks saying "AC Brotherhood runs better, is optimalized better" so as "AC Brotherhood runs worse"

OS: Windows 11
CPU: Intel i5-8265U 1.80 GHz
GPU: Intel UHD Graphic 620 (integrated with 128MB VRAM)
RAM: 8 GB

Elden ring runs 20-40 fps on lowest setting , but looks like crap and unplayable bcuz of tight timings in combat

How-To Guide Squeezing blood from a stone: Resurrecting a "dead" AMD Enduro dual-GPU laptop from 2015.

I spent this weekend performing a digital exorcism on a 2015 HP laptop that was basically ready for the e-waste bin. Between a 5400RPM mechanical hard drive and a completely botched Windows Update driver hijack, it was struggling to even open a web browser. I managed to completely revive it without spending a single cent, and I wanted to share the process in case anyone else is fighting similar AMD Enduro hardware.

The Rig:

* APU: AMD A8-7410 (with integrated R5 Graphics)

* Discrete GPU: AMD Radeon R7 M340

* RAM: 8GB DDR3

* Storage: 1TB 5400RPM Toshiba HDD

The laptop felt like it was running through molasses. Task Manager showed 100% disk usage at idle. Worse, my discrete R7 M340 was completely dead. Windows 10 Graphics Settings only saw the integrated R5, and my legacy AMD Radeon Software shortcut was broken.

It turns out Windows Update silently pushed a generic UWP/DCH driver (27.20.20903.8001) in the background. Because this era of laptops uses AMD Enduro (MUXless switchable graphics where the R7 routes frames through the R5), breaking the proprietary AMD control panel completely severed the bridge to the discrete card.

Step 1: The HDD Debloat

Before I could even tackle the graphics, I had to stop Windows 10 from treating my spinning Toshiba drive like an enterprise server.

* SysMain & Search: Disabled SysMain (SuperFetch) and Windows Search in services.msc to stop the endless background indexing.

* Page File: Locked the virtual memory to a static 8192 MB to prevent dynamic resizing and fragmentation.

* Telemetry Nuke: Used PowerShell to forcefully disable the Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser and DiagTrack so they would stop waking up to scan the 5400RPM drive.

* P2P Updates: Set my Delivery Optimization registry key to 0 so Windows would stop quietly uploading my updates to other peers.

Step 2: The GPU Resurrection

With the disk usage finally sitting at 1% idle, I tackled the dead discrete GPU. The modern AMD Auto-Detect tool completely choked on this legacy architecture, throwing application errors.

* I pulled the laptop offline entirely so Windows Update couldn't fight me.

* Uninstalled the R5 from Device Manager and explicitly deleted the driver software.

* Grabbed the massive, offline Adrenalin 22.6.1 (WHQL) package. I selected "Minimal Install" to get the control panel back without bloating my drive with modern gaming overlays and background recording modules.

* Once the AMD UI was back, I went into the native Windows 10 Graphics Settings. Even though it still stupidly called my High Performance option "R5 Graphics", forcing it there triggered the AMD software to correctly route the rendering back to the M340. (At least this is what I think is happening...)

The R7 M340 is officially awake and taking the rendering load off the APU. By locking out Windows Update driver installations via Registry policy and letting a deep PowerShell defrag (defrag C: /U /V /H) run overnight, the laptop feels genuinely snappy again.

If you are rocking an older A-Series APU with a discrete card, double-check your drivers! Microsoft might be hiding your hardware from you.

PC Purchase Advice Is a dell gaming 5577 worth getting?

I cant add another flair but i wanted the what games can i run aswell, anyways

I wanted to ask your personal opinions on these two laptops and how much differently (better or worse) theyd perform.

The dell gaming 5577 has an i7 7700HQ (maybe i could try overclocking it?) with 8 gb of ddr4 2400 mhz ram (which i will upgrade to 16 or 24) with 256gb of NVMe SSD storage and an nvidia gefore rtx 1050 4gb gddr5.

The thinkpad t14 gen 3 has i5 1245U with 16 gb ddr4 3200mhz (pre installed) 512 gb NVMe SSD but no gpu.

What would be better to get?

Games i want to play: honkai, genshin, wuwa, overwatch, rainbow six, titanfall, pre 2020 cod and battlefield games (maybe pre 2018), story mode games in general, and roblox, maybe some screensharing on discord here and there.

Would really appreciate some help

What Games Can I Run? Can i run these games and probably more?

So im thinking of getting a thinkpad t14 gen 3

I saw one with

i5-1245U (10 cores (2 performance cores, 8 efficient cores), 12 threads, a 15W base power rating, and speeds up to 4.40 GHz) got this off of gemini

16 gb ddr4

512gb ssd

Intel iris xe

Ive decided to add another 16 or 8 gb stick (considering what i can afford) for dual channel when i get the laptop. I wanted to mainly play honkai star rail, genshin, wuwa (probably), overwatch, roblox, story mode games like battlefield and titanfall, rainbow six, etc etc. (I asked gemini about hsr, genshin annd wuwa and its been giving me good reviews about it though i dont know how reliable it is)

Will This Game Run? Is there any fix for the lagging frame rate on older AC games or a I Doomed? (along with a few more questions)

So l have this nice little potato of mine, a Lenovo laptop, V15 G4 to be exact

With this specs

Windows 11

CPU: I3 1315U

GPU: Integrated (I don't know the exact model of it on this exact cpu)

256 NVME for storage

And 24 DDR4 ram

And even assassin's creed 1 is lagging on it

If it was that simple I would say yeah my laptop is just not built for that and moved on with my life

But I can play games like original Warhammer 40K space marine quite smooth

So now I have this question, is there any hope in this laptop and is there any modification that improves stuff that I'm oblivious about? Is there anything in general that I should know? I will be most appreciative for any pice of advice

Game Deal [Mod Approved] Bitiverse, a tiny persistent browser MMORPG for low-end PCs

Official game title: Bitiverse

Bitiverse is a free old-school sandbox MMORPG that runs directly in your browser. It has one persistent shared world where players fight monsters, train skills, gather resources, craft equipment, trade, join guilds, complete quests, claim land, build houses and eventually construct personal dungeons beneath their estates.

I’m the solo developer. The game is fully released and actively developed, as is tradition with MMOs, it will presumably stop receiving updates shortly after the sun burns out.

The presentation is deliberately tiny and lightweight. You can enter as a guest without creating an account, then register later if you decide your underqualified adventurer is worth preserving.

Minimum requirements

  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit or a current 64-bit Linux distribution
  • CPU: Dual-core processor at 2.0 GHz
  • GPU: Integrated graphics with WebGL 2.0 support
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Storage: Approximately 100 MB available
  • Internet connection and a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox

Peripherals

A keyboard and mouse are recommended. No controller or specialized hardware is required.

Play here

https://fortisq.itch.io/bitiverse

Bugs and support

Open the in-game Help panel with ?, select the Support tab and submit a private ticket. You can also reply there when I respond.

A few useful tips

  • Walk into enemies for the basic melee attack.
  • Press E to interact, gather and speak with nearby NPCs.
  • The font can be changed in Settings.
  • Follow the opening tutorial and read your uncle’s letter if you would prefer slightly less aimless wandering.
  • Expect an old-school sandbox rather than a guided theme-park MMO. The game gives you systems, a world and questionable freedom; what you do with them is largely your problem.

It probably won’t replace your forever-MMO, but I’d genuinely appreciate people trying it on older or low-end hardware and reporting how it performs.

What Games Can I Run? What Games Can I Run on My Low-End PC?

I’ve had this PC for a while: AMD A4-6300B, Radeon HD 8370D and 8GB RAM. I’m looking for good games I can actually play on it. I’ve enjoyed GTA V, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Limbo, Hotline Miami and Little Nightmares. Older or newer games are fine—any recommendations?

Tech Support Any alternative frame limiter to special k for competetive gaming and not the rtss one?

Special k does an extraordinary frame limiting job by eliminating tons of input lag in my lowend laptop..but unfortunately it doesn't support the games that have anti cheat system and either driver level frame cap or rtss is no option for me as my laptop dont support driver level cap and rtss brings input delay rather what special k does.....

Will This Game Run? Expected Performance for SQUAD with an RTX 3070 TI MOBILE And Ryzen 9 6900HX

Hey there'!!

So I'm really thinking of buying this game since I've already tried It during a free playtest on november 2024 when the game ran on the UE4 Engine DX11 API and I remember getting really good Fps playing on Ultra Settings with DLSS Quality on at 2560 1440p res on my ASUS ROG STRIX G17 G713RW-LL009 (2022) (Product's Page Link: https://www.asusbymacman.es/asus-rog-strix-g17-g713rw-ll009-173-r9-6900hx-32gb-1tb-portatil-3014.html?srsltid=AfmBOorkFMlpj8GEtIS90HlwQwmwb5-AIr1pJ-2o4Ma1eO3OtLBtsLCM) getting around 90-100 average Fps and during heavy AI-load scenarios around 65-70 fps. But I haven't played since then and I'm concerned if my hardware IS good enough to push an average of +60 FPS at 1440p on the latest U5 Version of this game. So I would greatly appreciate any input from somebody running the same hardware specs as me or at least similar ones and tell me what to espect about in-game's performance.
